A Fine Line

Chapter 23 - Big Steps

"Kadis-kot!" Seven announced with great satisfaction as she placed the winning piece on the board.

Janeway's only response was to glare at her across the table. Ever since they started playing, she felt agitated and annoyed. It didn't help that the stew was not sitting well, or that Seven seemed to enjoy this game entirely too much.

"Another game? You can be red this time," Seven offered magnanimously as she collected the pieces.

A sudden feeling of panic washed over Kathryn and then it was gone, along with much of her agitation.

"Or you can stay with green, if you prefer," Seven responded to the uneasy look on Kathryn's face.

"Captain, please report to Sickbay."

Kathryn quickly tapped her Com badge. "What's wrong, Doctor?"

"Jerran came into Sickbay and collapsed."

***

"Report," Janeway barked when she came into Sickbay with Seven at her side.

"Jerran's condition is stable," the Doctor said, glancing with surprise to Seven and her alluring blue dress. "She is in no danger," he told the Captain, then returned his curious and appreciative gaze to Seven.

"Doctor! Shouldn't Captain Ba'Re be in bed?" Kathryn asked, glaring at the preoccupied Doctor, then Ba'Re, who was at Jerran's bedside.

"I'm not budging," Ba'Re countered firmly, casting a look of challenge towards Janeway before returning her gaze to Jerran and gently brushing the hair off her forehead.

"Isn't it fascinating to discover that it's not just alpha quadrant Captains that make horrible patients?" The Doctor asked with feigned enthusiasm.

"What happened, Doctor?" Kathryn asked, ignoring his comment.

"Jerran came into Sickbay, looking rather pale. I though she might be in need of assistance, but she said she just needed to speak with Captain Ba'Re. She took approximately three steps towards the Captain, started to hyperventilate, managed a few more steps, then passed out," the Doctor recounted.

"Why?" Kathryn asked with concern.

"Well, in my expert opinion, she suffered from an acute attack of . . . nerves," the Doctor said, finishing flatly.

"She fainted?" Captain Ba'Re asked, unbelieving, tearing her eyes away from the Taak to look him in the eye.

"Yes," the Doctor said crisply.

"Shouldn't you . . . wake her?" Kathryn suggested, eyeing Jerran curiously.

"No need. She'll wake on her own soon enough. Now if you'll excuse me, I'll be in my office reviewing medical records," the Doctor announced and left.

After a silent moment, Kathryn looked at Seven. She took a breath to say something, but just exhaled and returned her gaze to Jerran and Ba'Re.

Jerran's eyelids fluttered, then finally opened. Disoriented a moment, she looked to her side to see Captain Ba'Re's worried face. She started to gasp, gulping breaths of air.

"You're in Sickbay, Jerran. You'll be all right," Captain Ba'Re said, her words not having the soothing effect she had hoped as Jerran continued to struggle with her breaths.

"Jerran, calm down," Janeway said, placing a hand on her shoulder. "It's ok," she said with confidence, though she didn't have a clue what was upsetting Jerran so. She grimaced, battling her suddenly nauseous stomach.

After a few more belabored breaths, Jerran's breathing calmed a bit.

"Better. You have us all a little concerned, Jerran. What's wrong?" Kathryn asked softly.

Jerran shook her head no. "I . . . I . . . wan. . . t. . t" Jerran said, her breathing becoming more erratic. Seven looked up at the biobed readings, noting Jerran's pulse and adrenaline levels jump. Kathryn frowned, feeling the growing anxiety.

"It's ok, Jerran. Take your time," Ba'Re said softly.

"B. . . Bond," Jerran sputtered.

"What was that??" Kathryn quickly asked with anticipation, suspecting what was so hard for the Taak to say.

"I want . . . to bond," Jerran said haltingly, turning to Karryn. "With you."

Karryn's mouth dropped open in shock.

Kathryn looked at Seven with a big smile. Seven's optical implant rose, impressed with Jerran's difficult admission and Kathryn's prediction actually coming true.

Karryn looked at Jerran, still disbelieving Jerran had actually spoken those words. "Captain Janeway didn't tell you to say that, did she?" She asked nervously.

Captain Janeway started to protest but Seven placed a hand on her forearm and shook her head no. Kathryn frowned but remained quiet.

"No! I choose," Jerran said with annoyed determination, that faded as she looked into beautiful green eyes. "You," she added softly, though still feeling her insides churn violently.

Janeway grimaced, wishing she hadn't had so much stew.

Tear-filled green eyes blinked as Karryn's face twisted from disbelief, to fear, then . . . amazed wonder. "You choose . . . me," she finished in a whisper, still numb from the declaration, almost too afraid to believe Jerran was finally letting herself want something beyond service to her Oben. Even more amazingly, she seemed willing to risk everything for something that would never truly be accepted. A bond with her.

Karryn almost jumped when Jerran's hand grasped hers and said confidently. "Yes." She stared at their hands an amazed moment, the touch spreading a frighteningly strong and familiar warmth through her.

Karryn stared at their hands sadly. "There are others more worthy, Jerran," she said weakly, struggling against what her heart wanted.

Kathryn looked at Ba'Re with great irritation, feeling Jerran's hurt. She was going to say something to convince the young woman of how foolish she was to reject Jerran. But once again, Seven placed a hand on her forearm forestalling any comments. As Kathryn returned her upset gaze to Ba'Re, she felt a surge of anger well up from Jerran which seemed to galvanize the Taak into action. Jerran sat up and slowly move off the bed to stand before Captain Ba'Re, who looked startled and small compared to the determined Taak towering over her.

"You tell me not to allow fear to rule my actions and yet you do that very thing!" Jerran said angrily.

"It is NOT fear!" Ba'Re argued.

"Then why do you deny this?!? I know you still love me. You must know I still love you - that alone makes you worthy!!"

"You know I am not whole, Jerran," Ba'Re responded miserably, tears forming in her eyes.

"Not yet!" Jerran argued emphatically, unaware how much that frustrated comment touched Ba'Re's heart. "I choose you, Karryn Ba'Re. But do you choose me?!?" She challenged.

Karryn looked Jerran in the eye a painfully long moment, causing Jerran's anger to fade under the intense scrutiny. When Jerran expelled a defeated sigh, Captain Ba'Re asked with mild irritation "Are you going to be this argumentative when we're bonded??"

A big smile emerged on Jerran's face at the word "when." But it quickly faded as she considered the surprising question and answered with honest uncertainty. "Maybe?"

"I guess we'll see, won't we?" Ba'Re offered with a warm smile for Jerran, who pulled her into a hug and kissed the top of her head.

Kathryn smiled, delighted beyond words.

***

"I had an enjoyable evening, Kathryn," Seven said as they entered Kathryn's quarters.

"I know how much you enjoy kadis-kot," Kathryn offered with amusement. "Care for another game?"

"I believe I should go and let you get some sleep."

"You think I'm actually going to be able to sleep after everything that's happened today?" Kathryn said.

"You should try. The Granarian texts have indicated the conveyance is physically and emotionally draining to the Oben bestowing a Taak," Seven said with some concern.

Kathryn sighed and nodded reluctantly. "Are you going to regenerate?" She countered, eyeing her.

"Yes."

"Good. Well then, thank you for the lovely evening, Seven," Kathryn said, mildly consoled that Seven would at least be getting needed regeneration.

"Good night, Kathryn" Seven said and looked at her an uneasy moment before leaning in for a tender kiss.

When she pulled back from the too brief contact, she saw a longing in Kathryn's eyes which was quickly buried as she offered a smile and nod good night. Seven looked at her a moment, wondering why saying goodnight was so difficult, nodded, and left without another word spoken.

***

"Understood, Captain. Glad things are working out," CDR Chakotay said over the video link with genuine smile.

"So far, so good, Commander. Janeway out," she said, turning off the view screen on her desk.

Having done all she could do in preparation for the Harrik, Kathryn sighed, knowing she should go to bed. But she also knew she wasn't going to be able to sleep. Succumbing to habit, she slipped into her uniform and left her quarters to tour the ship. So much had happened since the last time she had toured, she considered with amazement. With any luck, she was going to resolve her Taak problem and move on with her life . . . with Seven, she considered as warm smile emerged.

"Captain, it's been a while," Chief Engel said with a pleased smile as she strolled into Engineering. "I'm almost sorry I don't have a temperamental Mark 256 for you to look at."

"Trust me, Chief. I'm not."

"If you're interested, I'm cleaning a biolinear manifold. Care to help?" He said with amusement, offering her a sooty calibrator.

Kathryn held up her hands, with a grimace. "No thanks, Chief. I'm just touring. I'll leave the manifold to your capable hands."

"Thanks," he said flatly, gaining an amused smile. "Have a good evening, Ma'am. Glad to see you out and about."

"Thanks, Chief.

***

Kathryn wasn't surprised when she ended up at the doors to Cargo Bay 2. She entered and quietly walked towards the alcove, drawn to Seven, who made her feel more at ease, even while she regenerated. The calming effect Seven had on her was quite remarkable, especially considering she had a decidedly different effect on her when they touched, Kathryn mused as she observed the beautiful woman.

Kathryn was mildly envious of her ability to regenerate. She was so close to asking Seven to skip her regeneration to just stay with her. But she couldn't bring herself to ask, feeling foolish with her insecurities. She winced, recalling what could also happen to the young woman if she didn't regenerate properly. She reminded herself that she had faced many uncertainties alone before now, and would do so again. Besides, it would all be over with tomorrow, she considered.

Her face grew troubled a moment before she forced herself to take a fortifying breath.

***

Kathryn looked up into the star-filled Indiana sky, sitting on the porch swing where she had spent many evenings as a child, dreaming about the future. Never would her wildest dreams have placed her on a Starship so far from home, with a Taak, and the woman she loved regenerating in an alcove in . . . her Cargo Bay. She frowned. Seven needed someplace other than the Cargo Bay to live, she considered, growing annoyed at her own insensitivity.

"What brings you here, Katie?" Gretchen asked softly as she came out onto the porch, startling the Captain.

"I'm sorry I disturbed you. Don't you have a church bake sale early tomorrow morning?"

"Don't dodge my question. Is it Seven?" Gretchen probed.

"Why would you say that?"

"Mother's intuition?" She responded and eyed her stubbornly quiet daughter in the moon light. "You are worse than your father," she grumbled. "Don't make me drag it out of you. Tell me what's bothering you, Katie," she said and made herself comfortable on the swing next to her daughter.

Kathryn stared at the ground a moment and took a breath. "I'm afraid," she offered with a resigned shrug.

"Well. I'd never thought I'd hear my Starfleet daughter admit that," Gretchen said with surprise, causing a thoughtful nod from Kathryn, who stared at the wooden porch planks. "What are you afraid of? Your feelings for Seven? You shouldn't be afraid you know."

Kathryn chuckled and looked at her holographic mother. "You are a busy-body, you know that?"

"I'm your MOTHER, Kathryn. That gives me inalienable rights to ask questions," she said with authority. "So, am I right?"

"No," Kathryn sighed.

"Then what are you afraid of, Katie?" Gretchen asked softly, placing a hand on her daughter's shoulder.

"Sorry, mother. Computer, delete characters," Kathryn said with a heavy sigh, returning her gaze to the stars, thankful her holographic mother didn't keep count of how many times she had been deleted.

"Will you tell me?" Seven asked from the bottom of the porch steps, startling the older woman.

"You are supposed to be regenerating," Kathryn said with irritation, getting up from the porch swing.

"You are supposed to be sleeping," Seven countered, joining her on the porch. "Are you troubled by the risks of tomorrow?"

"An intriguing philosophical question, as each tomorrow carries unknown risks," she said flippantly.

"Kathryn," Seven countered, not pleased with her avoidance. "An intimate relationship involves more than physical intimacy, does it not?"

"Seven. . ."

"Does it not?" Seven repeated firmly, in a tone demanding no comment other than a direct answer.

"Yes," Kathryn answered with a belabored sigh.

"Then, am I to conclude you wish only physical intimacy with me and nothing more?"

"Seven, that's unfair," Kathryn said with irritation. "Just because I don't share every stupid thought I have. . . ."she added and exhaled with frustration.

"I do not wish to be unfair. I wish to understand and help. But you still seem uncomfortable with me doing that."

"I don't know what to tell you, Seven," Kathryn said with exasperation. "I know the risks are low, I know I should not be bonded with Jerran, and I know Jerran should be bonded to Karryn, yet I still feel . . . afraid. I don't know what else to say," Kathryn said with frustration. "I'm sorry I disappoint you."

"You do not disappoint me, Kathryn," Seven immediately responded, then glanced down self-consciously. "I was worried you found me inadequate to confide in."

"Never," Kathryn offered sincerely, taking her hand. "I have to warn you, Seven. I'm not used to sharing all my doubts and insecurities. And I'm not sure I'll ever be comfortable doing that. It's not you. It's me. I'm sorry I upset you."

"Your apology is unnecessary, Kathryn. I am not used to the dynamics of relationships and will undoubtedly upset you as I learn them."

"I stand informed," Kathryn said with a small smile, squeezing Seven's hand before letting go.

"Could this fear be from Jerran?" She asked curiously.

"No. I'm surprised I don't feel some sort of fear from her. But no, the fear is all mine," Kathryn said, less than thrilled.

Seven tilted her head thoughtfully. "Your "gut feel" has provided surprisingly accurate guidance in the past. Perhaps it is telling you that you should not go through with the Harrik."

"Oh no. This is the right answer," Kathryn said firmly. "For everyone."

***

"Deja vu all over again," Kathryn joked as they entered her quarters.

"I do not wish to say good night," Seven said.

"Well, technically, it's morning," Kathryn noted. "And you need to regenerate."

"I can sleep with you," Seven offered.

"W. . .What??" Kathryn sputtered.

"Sleep, while not as efficient as regeneration, will provide me sufficient rest. I believe we would both benefit if I slept with you this evening."

"In my bed?"

"I could sleep on the couch if you would feel too uncomfortable . . . ," Seven offered, suddenly less certain of her plan.

Kathryn reached out and took her hand, gently shaking her head no as she led her into her bedroom.

***

"I do not understand why "night clothes" are required," Seven said, emerging from the ensuite in the borrowed nightshirt. She could have just as easily slept in her biosuit. Though she did find the knee-length nightgown Kathryn wore quite appealing.

"They are," Janeway countered firmly without additional explanation, trying not to stare at the alluring curves and upper thighs exposed by the too short and too snug shirt. "Perhaps I should replicate you something less . . . uh, more comfortable," Kathryn said uneasily, scratching the back of her head as she had to pull her eyes away from Seven.

"I could sleep in the nude," Seven offered, prompting a panicked look from the older woman. Seeing the twinkle in Seven's eyes and a slight, amused smile, Kathryn's eyes narrowed.

"I'm beginning to think you are deliberately trying to torment me," Kathryn accused.

"My night clothes are sufficiently comfortable and you are procrastinating," Seven said, ignoring Kathryn's accusation. Though she could have argued that she was only gathering empirical data. "We should both sleep now," Seven said firmly, sitting on the bed with confidence, which waned as she attempted to slip under the covers and recline. It was the first time she had attempted to sleep in a bed, without being ill.

Kathryn joined her in bed and winced with sympathy at the apparent inability of the former Borg to get comfortable. At least she didn't think Seven was comfortable, judging from her continued board-like posture. Turning on her side, Kathryn propped herself on her elbow. Without a word, she reached out, running her fingers over Seven's brow and ocular implant, then down her cheek, which she caressed as she looked into questioning sky-blue eyes a moment. Finally, she placed a gentle kiss on Seven's full lips. Pulling back, she looked into beautiful blue eyes. "Your staying means a lot to me, Seven. Thank you," she said sincerely, prompting a small, satisfied smile from the younger woman, who relaxed a bit more into the mattress as Kathryn settled comfortably down beside her.

"You are welcome," Seven said softly, hearing the slow, deep breaths from her bed partner, who was no doubt fatigued. After tomorrow, she would convince Kathryn to take a vacation. A real vacation, she considered, determined to look for a suitable M-class planet. "Sleep well, Kathryn," she added softly.

After a yawn, Kathryn mumbled "sweet dreams, my love," as she drifted into sleep.

The words washed over Seven like a loving caress. She turned her head to study the slumbering woman who had captured her heart, until her own eyelids grew too heavy to remain open.

They both slept. Soundly.

Chapter 24 - Tall Tales

Kathryn slowly woke, feeling a warm breath tickling her neck and a warm hand move beneath her shirt as its fingers brushed against the bottom of her breast. Her eyes popped open as the fingers grew bolder in their exploration, sending a jolt of arousal to her core when a thumb and index finger discovered her erect nipple and tested its pliability.

"Seven!" Kathryn sputtered, her throbbing body jerked up into a sitting position.

"It is time to get up, Kathryn," Seven said matter-of-factly, getting out of bed and turning towards Kathryn, who looked a bit flushed. "I will prepare you a bath," she announced and left for the ensuite with a pleased smile, considering the response fascinating.

Kathryn tried to take calming breaths and not watch the blond tormentor's backside as she walked away, because that certainly didn't help.

***

Kathryn and Seven arrived at Sickbay to find the Doctor and Tom busily preparing for the conveyance. They were testing multiple sensors that were set up around the area that would serve as "the Circle" for the ceremony.

B'Elanna emerged from the Doctor's office with another sensor in hand. She halted, seeing the Captain and Seven. "Today's the big day, huh?" She said with an uneasy smile for the two women and awkwardly resumed her chore of busily installing the last instrument.

Seven frowned, getting Kathryn to rub her back and offer her a small smile.

Over by a biobed, Jerran and Karryn were already waiting anxiously.

"How are you feeling?" Janeway asked Captain Ba'Re as she and Seven joined them.

"Still a bit stunned," Karryn said honestly, looking at Jerran. "It's not every day a Taak chooses their Oben," she said softly.

Jerran smiled broadly.

She utterly transforms, Ba'Re thought, mesmerized by Jerran's smile.

Kathryn smirked smugly and eyed Seven, whose ocular implant rose in acknowledgment of Kathryn's accurate prediction.

"I hope you don't mind, but I've taken the liberty of inviting some guests," Captain Janeway said, pleased with her arrangements as the Granarian guests arrived with security, including Mr. Tuvok and CDR Chakotay.

"Rath? Olan?" Captain Ba'Re said with a surprised smile.

"Just in time, Commander Chakotay, Mr. Tuvok," Captain Janeway said formally and turned to the curious Granarians. "Welcome guests. Please enter and witness the honoring of Captain Ba'Re."

"What is going on, Captain?" CDR Rath asked Ba'Re, looking around Sickbay with concern.

Captain Ba'Re glanced at Janeway apologetically for his lack of manners. Janeway smiled in understanding and offered a dismissive shake of her head to Ba'Re's relief.

"I trust you are all right?" Captain Ba'Re asked, looking at each of them.

"We've spent some time in the holodecks!" LT Olan announced happily, causing Captain Janeway to smile with amusement that her recreation diplomacy seemed to be a success. "We were hiking in the Earth park called the Grand Canyon. It was GRAND. I especially liked . . . ," he continued, eager to explain all that he saw, until interrupted by Errgess' XO, who was tired of his incessant gushing.

"We are fine, Captain," CDR Ga'let interjected tersely, a bit annoyed to have their recreation interrupted, finding the holodeck surprisingly enjoyable.

"What happened to Yatook?" Rath asked Ba'Re quietly, concerned by the look that darkened her face.

"In a moment, you will understand," Jerran spoke up, placing a comforting hand on Ba'Re's shoulder.

An odd reaction for a Taak of another Oben, Rath considered curiously, glancing over to Captain Janeway for indications of disapproval. She didn't seem to notice it, or that Ba'Re's own hand now covered Jerran's. Highly irregular, he thought with worry, glancing to CDR Ga'let, who had his attention fixed on Captain Janeway, whose attention was fixed on the tall blonde as she provided her a Padd.

Captain Janeway turned to the Granarian guests, pausing to glance at each of them before beginning. Noting her flair for drama, Seven wondered if Kathryn would have been an actress, had she not become a Starship Captain.

"From the Great Traditions, when a Granarian has served with bravery and honor, it is appropriate for the beneficiary of those actions to reward that individual," Captain Janeway announced formally.

CDR Ga'let looked at Janeway with great surprise that she would bother to honor the Granarian traditions. Olan smiled broadly as Rath looked back at Captain Ba'Re with worry.

"When Yatook was brought into Sickbay by Captain Ba'Re, no one knew of the plot that would unfold, a plot that risked the safety of her crew detained in the brig and the Granarian ships bravely following Voyager's trail," Captain Janeway began, eyeing the small gathering.

She would have been a successful actress, Seven considered, glancing over to Tom and B'Elanna, who also were engrossed by the Captain's story.

Satisfied the guests understood the possible ramifications to other Granarians if this "plot" was successful, Captain Janeway continued.

"Feigning collapse, the crafty Yatook managed to seize a laser scalpel and hide it while he lay in wait. When I arrived to investigate the newest Granarian problem, he launched his deadly plan. Captain Ba'Re stood between the attacker and myself when he viciously attacked. Using her body to shield me, she received near-fatal wounds from the wild strikes of the blood-thirsty assassin," Captain Janeway relayed dramatically, causing Seven's optical implant to rise as she contemplated the differences between dramatic license and a lie.

Janeway turned to her most amazed listener. "Captain Ba'Re, show these witnesses your scars, so they may see the evidence of your valiant act."

Karryn blinked. A nudge from Jerran prompted Karryn to look at her with annoyance.

"Show your scar from your valiant act," Jerran repeated, getting Ba'Re to wince and slowly lift the side of her tunic, trusting Captain Janeway knew what she was doing. LT Olan and CDR Ga'let gasped at the angry scars.

Seven looked at Captain Janeway, who barely withheld a satisfied smile. The former Borg was impressed with her steps to help protect the young Captain from discovery.

CDR Rath looked around with mild panic, also sporting a few in that same area.

"While I know I am Captain Ba'Re's sworn enemy and she acted only in the best interest of her people, I can not ignore the fact I benefitted greatly from her heroism. Therefore, as Granarian tradition would dictate, I would be honored to perform the Harrik and bestow my valued Taak to this worthy individual."

LT Olan's face lit up, realizing he would witness something truly historic. Rath looked at Ba'Re with alarm.

"Captain Ba'Re, do you have someone to assist you during the conveyance?" Kathryn asked.

She nodded. "CDR Rath, would you do me the honor?" She asked with a warm smile.

He struggled to tamp down his growing panic as he nodded uneasily and stepped next to her. "Why are you doing this?" he quietly hissed as Captain Janeway called for Jerran to come up and turned to Seven.

"Trust me, Rath. It's OK," Ba'Re said with an easy smile. He looked at her and frowned.

"Seven of Nine, will you please stand by me?" Kathryn asked the former Borg, who immediately complied. Kathryn looked at Jerran, who sought out her choice.

"B'Elanna Torres? Would you stand by me?" the Taak asked, startling LT Torres, who nodded and joined Jerran's side. "What do I do?" She whispered anxiously to the Taak.

"Catch me if I fall down," Jerran said with a smirk.

"I can do that," B'Elanna said uneasily.

"As I am part of the ceremony, I would ask CDR Ga'let to read from the ancient texts," Captain Janeway said, holding up the Padd of the texts. "If he would honor us and the ceremony with that service," she said, bowing her head slightly to the proud Granarian and offered the Padd to him.

He stepped towards her, hesitant at first. But tradition and pride took over, prompting him to stand tall and take the Padd from her with a respectful nod. "Your respect for the Granarian culture is both surprising and appreciated, Captain. There will be songs of this day," he said and turned towards the group and spoke the ritual words of the Harrik in the ancient tongue.

After reciting the history of the Bond and roles of the Taak and Oben, CDR Ga'let turned to the woman of honor. "To Captain Ba'Re, Captain Janeway will bestow her Taak, Jerran," CDR Ga'let said and looked at the three women. "Please step forward."

The three stepped up, facing CDR Ga'let, who looked around with a sudden frown until Jerran presented her dagger to him. He nodded as he accepted the blade and continued. "Let the blood bond flow," he announced, taking Janeway's hand and quickly slicing her palm, producing a fine line of crimson.

Kathryn barely winced, having prepared herself for the sting of the blade. However, the Doctor and Seven did not hide their displeased frowns.

Ga'let then took Karryn's hand and repeated the act, announcing "From Oben to Oben," prompting them to clasp their wounded hands and let their blood mingle.

The tingling intrigued and startled Kathryn, who did not recall that sensation when she was wounded in her quarters, though she had been in pain from severe wounds at the time. Ba'Re sucked in an uneasy breath, prompting the Doctor to glance down at his console to confirm nothing was amiss. "So far so good," he whispered to Tom, who nodded absently as he watched the ceremony with fascination.

"Let the blood bond flow," he repeated, taking and slicing Karryn's other hand and finally Jerran's. "From Taak to Oben."

Rath wanted to scream out and stop this deadly nonsense, but his intended protest fell silent at the look of utter joy on Ba'Re's face as she reached for Jerran's hand. He noted that joy was mirrored on Jerran's face. He grimaced at the thought of denying his Captain, his friend, that feeling of love and complete acceptance. She deserved that, even if it was fleeting. He swallowed hard, pushing down the great sorrow he felt, reminding himself they all were living on borrowed time anyway.

When their hands clasped, Seven noted Kathryn jerk slightly and take in a ragged breath. She glanced to the Doctor, who studied the console with concern. That did not provide the comfort she hoped for.

"Let the old bond find final peace," CDR Ga'let said to Kathryn, who looked uneasily at Ba'Re, then Jerran. They were so happy, she thought and blinked back tears. Yet she was reluctant to let go of Karryn's hand, feeling like she would be letting go of a lifeline. But she had to and did. As she had feared, a darkness consumed the bond, leaving a hole.

She wondered how her heart managed to still beat, how her lungs managed to fill with air as she bravely watched Jerran and her new Oben, who looked at each other with such love. This was the right answer, she thought with a wince, in spite of the pain.

"Let the new bond be born," he said as Jerran grinned and took both her hands in hers before sharing a kiss with her Oben.

"It is done," CDR Ga'let said with a smile as the Granarians cheered happily.

Seven's hand on her back made Kathryn turn and weakly smile at the questioning look.
"I'm fine. Tired, but fine," Kathryn lied as the hole seemed to grow inside her.

Seven continued to look upon Kathryn's appearance with concern. She appeared to grow more haggard before her eyes.

LT Olan congratulated Captain Ba'Re with an awkward handshake as CDR Rath looked at her and chuckled with amazement. "Bet you didn't expect to get yourself a Taak when you volunteered, did you?" He joked, causing Ba'Re to beam as she looked at Jerran.

"An unusual ceremony to say the least," CDR Ga'let said, then found all Granarian eyes on him. "But no less honorable," he added.

Satisfied with the Granarian's health, the Doctor approached Captain Janeway with his tricorder.

"You're stable. But I'd like to run a few more tests," he said.

"Very well, Doctor," she said flatly, wondering if the tricorder would detect the gaping hole left behind that threatened to consume her.

"Captain Janeway, I can't tell you how much this means to me," Captain Ba'Re said as she and Jerran approached. She had not let go of Jerran's hand since they clasped in the ceremony. However, Jerran didn't seem to mind, Seven considered, noting the happy smile on her face.

"You two take care of each other," Janeway said with a forced smile, though she felt nearly suffocated with sadness.

"I will serve with honor," Jerran vowed, standing straighter with pride.

"I will respect what we have," Ba'Re said solemnly.

"With all that honor and respect, don't forget to enjoy," Kathryn added, getting smiles from both.

***

"This is it," Jerran said with a smile, motioning Ba'Re to enter her quarters. "There's a separate bedroom and ensuite through there," Jerran said as they entered.

"You have been staying here?" Ba'Re asked uneasily and walked around Jerran's quarters, running her fingers over the plush furniture with amazement.

"It was needed at first. I could not stay very far away from Captain Janeway," she said, looking around the room. "Her quarters are next door."

Ba'Re nodded thoughtfully, then frowned. "What's wrong?" Jerran quickly asked.

"I can't provide you with accommodations as nice as these, Jerran," Karryn said regretfully.

"Will you be in them?" Jerran asked softly, stepping towards the smaller woman, who turned away sadly.

"There isn't any other room on my ship," she said apologetically, her head dropped down. To her surprise, she was pulled into an embrace.

"If you are in them, I will be happy," Jerran said, kissing the shorter woman on the top of the head.

Karryn turned in her arms and looked up into Jerran's blue eyes. "You know, you keep missing my lips," she complained. "You never had that problem when you were a del' Taak."

Jerran smiled and traced her fingers affectionately over the young Captain's lips before pulling the smaller woman against her and kissing her soundly.

***

"Well, everything seems to be in order. There are clear indications of exhaustion, but I don't see why you can't rest in your quarters," the Doctor offered pleasantly.

Kathryn barely heard what he and Seven were discussing, glancing at him absently. Noticing him look at her, apparently waiting for a response, she nodded weakly. Why didn't his tests see the hole left behind? The hole that threatened to consume her, she thought looking around the Sickbay feeling like she was an outsider, fading away.

"Doctor, are you sure you do not need to keep her here for observation?" Seven asked as Tom and B'Elanna looked on with concern.

Like Seven, B'Elanna felt uneasy with the Captain's sluggishness. "Sounds like a good idea," B'Elanna offered, getting everyone to look at her with surprise.

"Why thank you for your medical opinion, Dr. Torres. Now that we have that settled, perhaps I should go to Engineering. I understand the warp core control panel needs calibration," the Doctor responded with a glare. B'Elanna rolled her eyes.

Feeling a tight grip suddenly on her forearm, Seven's head snapped towards Kathryn. She watched helplessly as a look of panic flashed in Kathryn's eyes before they rolled back as she succumbed to the darkness.

***

She was tired but kept jogging and jogging. She vainly squinted in hopes of seeing something around her, but the blackness completely engulfed her. God she was tired, so very tired. If she could just rest a moment, she thought wearily, fighting an anxiousness that told her to keep going. But if she rested, she would have more energy to start jogging again later, she rationalized, slowing down to a brisk walk.

The first rule of survival, conserve energy, she considered. Or was that the third? She frowned as she continued, walking more slowly. She grew colder and wrapped her arms around herself as she shivered. What was that rule about staying put so they can find you? Was that the third?? She sighed, needing to rest, and slowed down further until she came to a stop.

The chill that washed over her drained her remaining strength. This was it. She was dying, she concluded, realizing no one was going to find her here. She felt so lost and alone and so very cold. But it would be over soon, she thought with some consolation.

She winced at the beam of light that suddenly pierced the darkness. It was a fine, golden thread of light, insufficient to annihilate the black hole she was in. But as she stepped in its path, she immediately welcomed its warmth. She walked instinctively towards the light. She started to run towards it but quickly grew frustrated. It was too damn far away. She slowed to a jog, then a walk, again growing weary. Just when she was ready to stop, she heard something. Something familiar, she considered curiously as she continued towards the light and music, picking up her pace. The sound grew louder and she could finally make out the dulcet strains.

The path of light suddenly grew and swallowed the darkness.

". . . my only sunshine . . . . ," Seven sang softly, struggling to keep her tone pure for Kathryn. She pressed Kathryn's hand against her cheek and continued, shutting her eyes as tears fell. "You make me happy when skies are grey. You'll never know dear, how much I. . . ."

"Seven!" The Doctor interrupted anxiously, gaining a sharp look from the former Borg, whose irritation faded as she noted the excited smiles from the Doctor, Tom, and B'Elanna.

". . . I love you," Kathryn finished the phrase softly.

Seven quickly returned her gaze to Kathryn, staring at her an emotional moment before taking her face in her hands. "I love you," she responded and kissed her.

Tom smiled warmly and glanced to B'Elanna, who sighed and quietly left Sickbay. He frowned and looked thoughtfully at the Captain and Seven, who were quietly exchanging gentle touches and words as the Doctor attempted to scan the Captain unobtrusively.

Chapter 25 - The Road to Recovery

Arms and legs were entangled beneath the covers, causing difficulty in moving from her position, Ba'Re noted, though she wasn't really complaining.

A moist mouth engulfed her ear, causing her to moan. Pulling back with difficulty, she asked guiltily "Jerran . . . don't you think it's rude we haven't gone to see how Captain Janeway is doing?"

"Seven informed me she was recovering and not in the mood for visitors," Jerran said, leaning in to suck on her ear lobe.

"When did you talk with her??"

"When you took the shower, just before you decided we would try a bubble bath," Jerran said with amusement, pleased to offer Karryn the simple pleasure.

"Oh," Karryn said, biting her lip with mild embarrassment for her indulgence.

"I have something else I want to show you," Jerran said with amusement, leaning in to kiss her.

Karryn pulled back and peaked under the covers. "You have showed me quiet a bit already," she smirked.

"There is more to show, more to experience," Jerran said, taking possession of Karryn's breast in one hand as she devoured her mouth in a hungry kiss.

"Jerran," Ba'Re said after the kiss, trying to ignore how distracting Jerran's hands were. "You know, we don't have to experience everything all at once," she offered with amusement.

Jerran's caresses stopped as she pulled back to look Ba'Re in the eye. "I don't want to waste our time together."

Ba'Re smiled. "When we are together, how can that be wasted time?"

Jerran looked at Ba'Re a thoughtful moment. A smile emerged.

"I knew I picked you for a reason," Jerran said, pulling Ba'Re into an embrace as she settled back onto the bed.

Ba'Re chuckled. "I am never going to hear the end of that, am I? "I picked you, Karryn." she mimicked haughtily.

"Well I did," Jerran said smugly as she kissed Ba'Re's forehead.

"Yes. Yes, you did," she agreed softly, hugging Jerran tightly.

On the second day, at precisely the scheduled time, Seven entered Kathryn's bedroom with a tray of food. It was the mid-afternoon meal. She had scheduled five meals per day instead of Kathryn's usual three to improve absorption of nutrients through smaller, more frequent meals. She refrained from suggesting efficient injections or even more frequent, smaller meals to further improve nutrient absorption. She concluded her advice would not be well-received, considering Kathryn's increasing hostility towards all helpful suggestions, however logical and efficient.

Seven sighed at the sight of Kathryn, who sat in her bed, staring straight ahead with her arms crossed over her chest with a very tense look on her face.

"You can be angry, if you wish. But you will be getting the rest the Doctor prescribed," Seven said firmly.

"Three days of bed rest???" Kathryn snapped. "You reprogrammed him again, didn't you?" Kathryn accused, staring at the tray of food, wondering if Seven was getting cooking lessons from Nelix as she spied the gelatinous blob on the plate.

"If I had, it would have been at least a week. You need the rest, Kathryn," Seven countered and waited for Kathryn to start her meal.

"I'm not hungry," Kathryn said evenly.

Seven sighed and, to Kathryn's amazement, picked up a fork-full of the blob, which was specially formulated by her to include all the nutrients Kathryn needed. Holding up the fork in front of Kathryn's lips, she said "I could make buzzing noises of various transport vehicles, if that would promote your cooperation."

"You've GO . . . umph!" Kathryn's indignant protest was interrupted by a mouthful of gelatin.

Still stunned by the audacity of the young woman, she watched as Seven picked up a napkin and try to dab the side of her mouth.

"Will you STOP that?!?" Kathryn said, grabbing Seven's hand and pushing it away. "That's it! I've let you nursemaid me long enough," Kathryn barked and quickly escaped on the opposite side of her bed, surprising Seven with her agility.

"Kathryn, you need to rest," Seven responded impatiently.

"I need to MOVE! I need. . . ." Kathryn said, then stared at Seven a moment before a grin emerged.

"You should get back to bed," Seven said, becoming even more uneasy when Kathryn's grin grew.

The door chimed, causing a breath of relief from Seven. "I should answer that," she said and quickly left Kathryn, concerned by Seven's odd reaction.

***

"B'Elanna?" Seven blurted with surprise as the Engineer smiled weakly.

"Hi, Seven," B'Elanna said uneasily, feeling a bit foolish about her reaction to Seven and the Captain kissing. "Is the Captain up for visitors today?"

"She's up," Seven said flatly, prompting a curious look from the Chief Engineer.

"Oh. Should I come back later?"

"LT Torres! Don't tell me there's another Mark 256 problem," Captain Janeway joked as she emerged from her bedroom donning her uniform jacket. Seven frowned.

"No, Captain. I think we've managed to solve that problem. I just stopped by to see how you were doing."

"I'm well, thank you. And anxious to get back to work," she said with a smile.

"Kathryn, you are not planning to go back to work before your prescribed rest period is completed," Seven said with irritation.

"Is that a question or command, Seven?" Kathryn challenged, surprising B'Elanna, who wisely remained silent while glancing between two forces of nature.

"It wouldn't be a prudent choice for your health," Seven said tersely.

"It wouldn't be a prudent choice for my health if I have to spend another minute in that damn bed. I'm this close to lapsing into a COMA," Kathryn said with irritation, holding out her thumb and index finger to demonstrate how close.

Close, B'Elanna considered, inspecting the distance between her fingers.

"Kathryn, you are being unreasonable."

"You are being over bearing," Kathryn snapped, then turned to B'Elanna with an exceedingly polite smile as she remembered her manners. "Would you care for something to drink, B'Elanna?"

It wasn't often the Chief Engineer was afraid. There was no good that could come from her staying. Either Seven or the Captain, or both would get mad at her. She had to leave. Now. "Uh . . . thanks but, I just stopped by to see how you were," she blurted, stepping back towards the door. Her escape was hampered when she banged into the coffee table. "Kahless," she hissed, grabbed her knee, and hopped back from the table.

"Careful," Kathryn said with a wince.

"Heh, didn't see that there. Sturdy table," she said awkwardly with a weak laugh. "Well, you seem to be doing . . . well. So, I should get going so you two can continue to . . . discuss things. Bye," B'Elanna said and fled the Captain's quarters.

Seven and Kathryn stared at the door a moment.

Kathryn bit her lip.

"I do not believe she will be visiting again, anytime soon," Seven offered, causing Kathryn to chuckle.

"I do believe you are right," Kathryn offered as she scratched her forehead.

"Please do not go back to work," Seven said anxiously.

Kathryn took a breath. "All right. I'm sure we can figure out how to pass the time without putting me in a coma and still accommodate your desire to keep me in bed," she said with an amused smile, reaching out for Seven's hand.

Kathryn didn't expect Seven to pull away. "Seven, what's wrong?"

***

B'Elanna took a food tray from the stack and stood in line. When she reached the front, Nelix saw her and smiled his usual happy smile. "LT Torres! What would you like today?"

"Do you have any of the Jelly roast left?"

Nelix looked at her with questioning eyes, not sure if she was joking, distinctly recalling her threat to make pâté de foie Nelix. When she sighed impatiently, he smiled broadly, realizing it was no joke. "Indeed I do! Let me get some for you. I'll be back in a jiff," he gushed and sped off on his mission to please a customer.

"What did you do? Give him a million bars of latinum?" Tom joked as he joined her in the front of the line with a winning smile.

B'Elanna snorted. "I just asked for jelly roast."

Tom looked at her with surprise and mild concern.

"Here you go. Enjoy!" Nelix came back with a container of jelly roast that he opened and poured out onto her tray with a slimy splop.

***

Kathryn certainly didn't expect Seven to seek refuge in her ensuite, she considered, pacing in her bedroom, waiting. It was not like her to hide, or use the ensuite for that matter. After an exceedingly long time, Kathryn's patience was at an end.

She went to the ensuite door and softly knocked. "Seven, what's wrong? Please talk to me."

At the continued silence, Kathryn frowned, racking her brain for what could have caused the sudden discomfort with her. She glanced at the bed with confusion, recalling how Seven had no problem partaking in teasing comments and sensual touches. In fact, Seven seemed to derive an inordinate amount of pleasure from tormenting her while she was bonded . . . .

Kathryn looked back at the door quickly as understanding smacked her between the eyes.

"You're afraid of being intimate with me," Kathryn said, hoping to provoke the young woman into talking.

"I am not afraid of being intimate with you," she protested weakly.

"We need to talk," Kathryn said. "And I'm not going to do it through a door."

After a moment, Seven hesitantly opened the door. Kathryn nodded and headed into the living room, followed by Seven. Sitting on the couch, Janeway looked at her, waiting patiently for Seven to sit.

"I'm sorry, Kathryn," she said, sitting down uneasily, looking at her hands that were clenched into balls.

"I love you," Kathryn said without preamble, making Seven feel more guilty for her reaction. "The last thing I want is for you to feel uncomfortable with me or my touch. Now that I'm not bonded to Jerran, you are worried I'm not going to draw the line on how far we go, aren't you?" She asked, getting an uneasy wince as answer.

"I do want to make love to you, Seven. Very much. But I want you to know, it's not just up to me to draw the line. If you feel the need to stop, or feel uncomfortable with something I am doing, just tell me and I will stop," Kathryn vowed.

"Will you not be disappointed?"

"Seven, I would be disappointed if you were uncomfortable or unhappy. All you have to do is tell me to stop."

Seven looked at her a moment, digesting Kathryn's comments, which had provided her with significant relief. "What should my "safe" word be?" She asked.

Kathryn blinked.

***

When they sat at the table, Tom surprised B'Elanna by placing a small vase with a single yellow flower on their table. "What's that for?" She asked with a small smile.

"Just sprucing the place up for my lady with a daisy," he said with a smile.

"Are you sure it's not a dandelion, Tom?" B'Elanna said, looking at the numerous yellow petals.
"Uh. No. But hey, can't a guy give his gal a pretty flower?"

"It's a weed."

"It's robust! And pretty, isn't it??"

"I suppose," she considered, eyeing the plant.

"And . . . might you say, it grows on you?" He smirked.

She groaned, causing him to smile happily. "Whether you want it to or not," she groused, unable to refrain from smiling herself as she stabbed a piece of jelly roast.

"Can I have a bite?" He asked, looking at the glob curiously.

"You're serious?"

"Sure. If you think it's worth eating, I'll give it a shot," he said, opening his mouth, expecting her to feed him.

She rolled her eyes and fed him a bite. His eyes bulged.

"Pretty good, isn't it?" She asked.

He swallowed then coughed, turning red.

"Hmmm," she responded curiously, taking a taste herself and finding it just as delicious as before. "Maybe you need Klingon taste buds," she said as Tom bolted up from his seat to grab a glass of water from the neighboring table and guzzle it.

***

"How about "stop" ?" Kathryn said flatly, rubbing the bridge of her nose.

"From my study of various sexual rituals, the word "stop" would be an inadequate safe word. If there was role-playing involving forced sex, for example, the word "stop" would be frequently used, though neither party would actually wish to stop."

"Of course," Kathryn sighed, rubbing her temples.

"You do not think we need a safe word?" Seven asked curiously.

"Well, Seven. If you want one, we can have one."

"But you do not think it is needed."

"I have never been in a relationship that required one. But if you want one. . . ."

"You do not feel comfortable with the idea of pain or role-playing during intercourse?"

Kathryn stared at her a moment, not pleased with the direction this conversation was taking. "Actually, I had hoped we would make love . . . without games," she said simply.

"But I want to please you," Seven said in a small voice, glancing down.

"Seven, you don't need pain," Kathryn said with a slight cringe. "Or a role to please me. I want to know you, to touch you, to love you."

Seven looked at her uncertainly. However, Kathryn's loving gaze made her uncertainty slowly fade away. Kathryn smiled warmly as she reached out for her hand and leaned in for a kiss.

"Talaxian gruel," Seven blurted, efficiently halting Kathryn's advance.

"You've got to be kidding."

"A good safe word is one that you would not likely utter during foreplay or intercourse. Do you expect to be inadvertently saying "Talaxian gruel" during intimate moments, Kathryn?" Seven asked, tilting her head curiously.

Kathryn wasn't sure if she should be relieved or worried to see the mischievous glint in her blue eyes. "God I hope not."

"Very well. That will be our safe word."

"Words. It's two words."

"Then perhaps we should select a single. . . ." Seven said, interrupted by Kathryn's lips on hers.

Kathryn's kisses were addictive, Seven thought, amazed at how easily she lost track of everything except the delicious texture of Kathryn's lips, her tongue, her hands caressing the back of her neck and her shoulder. The powerful responses of her body made her to want more. So much more, it startled her, causing Seven to pull back and blurt "Talaxian gruel," successfully hindering another advance, but for only a moment. Ever so slowly, Kathryn continued her campaign and closed the distance between their lips as Seven responded "This is a most ineffective safe word if you continue to kiss me."

With difficulty, Kathryn pulled back, struggling to control her breathing. "I'm finding it hard to stop kissing you," she admitted ruefully. "Why don't we call it a night?" She said uncomfortably, standing up as Seven watched her with concern. "We can spend the day together tomorrow. I want to court you, Seven. Like you deserve," Kathryn said firmly, knowing she needed to slow things down, and vowed to do so. "I do want more than just physical intimacy, Seven," she offered, hoping Seven believed that.

"As do I," Seven offered softly, getting a nod.

"Well, if you don't mind letting yourself out, I'm going to retire," she said with a weak smile, certain a kiss goodnight in her current state was not a good idea.

Seven watched as Kathryn turned and left the room.

Kathryn exhaled heavily as she entered her bedroom, rubbing the back of her neck. She didn't get more than five steps before she was overcome by a six-foot tall wall of affection. Seven pulled her into an embrace and descended upon her mouth.

"Seven?" Kathryn said with difficulty, between kisses.

Seven pulled back and looked into her eyes. "You will court me later," Seven husked and continued her passionate kisses.

Kathryn did not argue.

They slowly migrated to the bed, kissing and caressing as Kathryn blindly felt for something that would release the damn biosuit and allow her to touch the flesh beneath. Seven sensed Kathryn's desire and pulled back, amazed how the look of hunger in Kathryn's eyes could stir even more arousal. She reached back by her neck and, with a slight motion, unfastened the suit. She nervously took it off, hesitantly revealing her implant-scarred body.

"You are beautiful," Kathryn whispered reverently as she stepped towards the taller woman. Slowly reaching out, she gently traced her fingers over around the spidery implant on her hip, causing a sharp gasp and Seven to jerk away from her touch.

"I'm sorry, I'm rushing you into this," Kathryn blurted guiltily, trying not to stare at the gorgeous body before her. "We should probably . . ." Kathryn said uneasily, but was interrupted when Seven took her hand and gently placed it over her hip and the small implant.

"Your light touch was . . . ticklish," she admitted. "A firmer touch will have the desired effect of encouraging arousal."

Kathryn sighed with relief and caressed the implant with more pressure. "Yes, like that," Seven said, enjoying at the firmer caress. "I do not feel rushed, Kathryn. Only nervous with my inexperience."

"I'm a bit nervous too, Seven," Kathryn admitted with a small smile.

Seven tentatively reached out to unfasten Kathryn's uniform jacket. Kathryn nodded. Seven grew bolder in undressing her, stealing kisses and bestowing caresses as she pealed off the layers of clothing with infinite care, until finally Kathryn stood nude before her.

With the clear task of undressing finished, Seven's uncertainty grew.

"Give me your hand," Kathryn commanded softly, causing Seven to silently comply. She followed Kathryn onto the bed. "Lie down with me," she said gently, pulling the covers down so they could slip beneath them.

Once reclined, Seven's heart rate soared as she experienced the sensation of Kathryn's breasts pressing against hers while Kathryn nuzzled and kissed her face. Needing to increase the tactile sensations, her hands immediately slipped around to Kathryn's bare back, stroking and exploring the normally tense muscles and amazingly soft skin. She felt Kathryn's kisses upon her lips, then her cheek, then her neck, where she skillfully licked and nibbled, causing a surprising surge of moisture in her genitalia and a soft moan. Had she been able to think, she may have been concerned about her nervous system short circuiting her implants when Kathryn's warm mouth enclosed around an erect nipple and started to suck. All her research on human sexuality had not adequately prepared her for the raw sensations she was experiencing now.

She whimpered as Kathryn's hand slowly slid down her body, thoroughly exploring her implants and flesh along the path South. Kathryn pulled away from Seven's nipple and kissed her way back up her chest until she looked Seven in the eye. Seven's respiration increased as Kathryn's hand slowly descended through the curly tuft of hair, closer to the bundle of nerves that throbbed with want. Seven took a startled breath when Kathryn's fingers briefly touched the small nub and slowly began to massage around the area, her arousal providing more than enough lubricant. The intimate touch did not seem to provide her any relief, however.  It increased her need.

Between kisses, Kathryn watched as Seven struggled with the growing pressure caused by her busy fingers. Seven suddenly reached down for Kathryn's hand and encouraged Kathryn to touch where she had seemed to avoid, but where Seven desperately wanted to be touched.

"Please," Seven exhaled with urgency. Kathryn kissed her and did as requested, entering her with a firm stroke that prompted a whimpered "oh" from the new, intense sensation inside her.

Kathryn's own arousal grew as she watched Seven strain helplessly against the unfamiliar sensations building within her. Her cheeks were flushed and her plump lips puckered as she took short, uneasy breaths. So beautiful, Kathryn thought as Seven suddenly grew stiff when the sensations crested. The stiffness lasted only a brief moment before an orgasm overtook her body, causing her to cry out as she trembled with release. Kathryn slowed her ministrations and kissed her tenderly until she stopped and just watched her. Moved beyond words, Kathryn's eyes welled up.

Seven's eyes opened, which surprised her since she couldn't recall shutting them.

"Kathryn," Seven whispered with wonder, staring for a long silent moment into eyes that held such love for her. Any fear or hesitation she ever had was driven away by that gaze. With incredible certainty, she reached up and pulled Kathryn into a long, heartfelt kiss, and reversed their positions.

Seven searched Kathryn's eyes and smiled when Kathryn's hand reached up and caressed her face. Kathryn was right, she considered as her lips descended.

Love was perfection.

Epilogue

"Captain's Personal Log. Saying goodbye is never easy. Especially when you know you will never see them again. I have met many in my travels, but none have affected me or changed me as much as they have," she said, glancing back at her lumpy bed that contained her lover, somewhere under the covers. "I suppose you can not call people you know for only a handful of days good friends, but I can not think of anything else to call them."

"Sworn enemies??" A disembodied voice offered from beneath the covers and chuckled.

"Computer, end personal log," Ba'Re said with a growl and stood up from her console, turning towards the amused bundle of covers.

"I don't suppose you are feeling the slightest bit of sadness they are gone," Ba'Re said as she sat on the edge of their bed and spotted blue eyes peeking out from beneath the covers.

"They are headed home, as they were meant to do. And they are happy now, as they were meant to be. Why would I be sad?" Jerran said.

Ba'Re frowned. "I just wish we had more time with them. I had so much to ask Captain Janeway," she said sadly.  "And I never got to try the holodeck," she added with a pout.

"Come here," Jerran said, sitting up in bed and holding out her arms.

"You're awfully bossy for a Taak," Ba'Re said as she quickly accepted the offer and snuggled into Jerran's body, resting her head beneath her chin.

"You're awfully submissive for an Oben," Jerran countered as she kissed her forehead.

"If you'll recall, I wasn't the one who was submissive all last night," Ba'Re cheerfully reminded Jerran, before finding herself on her back, looking up into intense blue eyes.

"I like you submissive," Ba'Re offered. Jerran's brow rose. "Ok, ok, I like you dominant too."

Jerran smiled. "And you will have both."

***

Kathryn stared out her bedroom window and watched the stars pass. They had left Granarian territory and were finally in neutral space. It was something she had wanted so badly and for so long, she was struck by the irony of her sadness. She would miss Jerran, who just wanted to please her. Ultimately, her courage and strength in choosing Ba'Re did just that. And she would miss Captain Ba'Re, who was a surprising force to be reckoned with. The Granarian Council would soon realize that, she thought with a pleased smirk, wondering how Captain Ba'Re would make her mark upon Granarian society. She had no doubt she would do great things, especially with Jerran now at her side.

But as fate would have it, she would never find out what life had in store for those two. She would never see Jerran or Ba'Re again. Such was the life of a Starship Captain, she considered with a heavy sigh.

A gentle hand squeezed her shoulder, causing her to turn and smile sadly.

"Are you all right?" Seven asked softly.

"I miss them," Kathryn offered reluctantly. Seven pulled her into a needed hug.

"I do too," Seven admitted.

After a moment enjoying the embrace, Kathryn pulled back and gently kissed her. Smiling, she leaned into another kiss, only to be reminded "We will be late for dinner."

Seven abruptly turned and headed towards the door, causing a frown.

"You do know she's just a hologram?" Kathryn said flatly and followed Seven.

"I am well aware of that, Kathryn. However, that does not excuse tardiness," Seven replied firmly, waiting for Kathryn to join her in the hallway.

"We could have gone to a restaurant, you know," Kathryn said, joining her.

"I would like to get to know your mother, even if a holographic representation. She still is able to provide me with a great deal of information about you and your family. Information that you seem reluctant to share," Seven offered as they walked towards the turbo lift.

"At least I'll still get a good meal out of it," Kathryn grumbled with a sigh.

"I would prefer to obtain the information I desire from you," Seven said, eyeing Kathryn.

"You just need to ask," she said magnanimously as they arrived at the turbo lift.

"I have."

"Seven, I don't remember half of what Mother recalls," Kathryn protested. "Maybe there's a problem with the program," Kathryn muttered.

"There is not a problem with the program," she countered confidently. "Your mother has created impressively robust and detailed algorithms, which are not prone to degradation . . . or direct data extraction," she added with mild irritation, entering the turbo lift.

"Really," Kathryn said flatly, standing next to Seven, and stared out at the corridor.

"Yes."

"I'm sure Mother will be pleased you appreciate her programming skills," Kathryn said. "Deck six."

"Her attention to detail is inspiring," Seven admitted honestly. Turning her head towards Kathryn, she offered a notable example. "There is even a subroutine that records the number of times you delete your mother's character."

The End
