Kathryn Janeway, the famous Starfleet captain of U.S.S. Voyager NCC-74656 was sitting with her slight compact but wiry frame in one of the niches in the master bedroom of her newly built home. Her auburn shoulder length hair was glistening under the moonlight sky. Blue grey eyes that reflected her mood were showing definite signs inner turmoil. Closing them she took many long cleansing breaths to calm herself and she recalled how the incredible journey the last seven and a half years had started.

Following the disappearance in an area of space known as the Badlands of a Maquis cell led by captain Chakotay that had been infiltrated by Lieutenant Tuvok, a Starfleet officer. Janeway, Voyager and her crew led the mission to find her Vulcan friend and subordinate officer Tuvok and bring the members of the Maquis cell to Federation justice. In the same manner that the Maquis ship had been previously by the Caretaker's Array, Voyager was catapulted 70 000 light years from home, as a direct result many of Voyager's crew died. In order to save a race, the Ocampa, from obliteration and to prevent free access to the powerful Array by the Kazon, a power hungry people completely lacking in principles, Janeway opted to destroy it. That difficult moral choice left them without the means of getting back home. In the ensuing battle with the Kazon, the Maquis ship was destroyed while its crew had to join with that of Voyager's. From then on, the Captain's mission and duty was to bring them back home.

It had certainly not been easy to follow the policies and principles of Starfleet and the Federation. Coming from a Starfleet family, the captain had those ingrained in her. She believed in them unequivocally and undoubtedly lived by them. Since being a commanding officer rarely offered a clear black or white case, lighter or darker shades of grey being the norm, the Delta Quadrant had tested fully her evaluation of those shades every day increasing exponentially the difficulty of her command decisions. Some of them could certainly be interpreted as violations of those policies and principles because she had stretched and bended them a few times. It was understandable when you take in to consideration the unusual and quite often unexpected circumstances they had faced plus the fact that they had been completely isolated from the rest of Starfleet and the Federation for most of their time in that unexplored Quadrant of the galaxy.

On their way back to the Alpha Quadrant, they had encountered a vast number of species. Some species had welcomed them with open arms; some had given them a very cold shoulder while others had been vicious and deadly. For each crewmember that died along their journey, Janeway felt solely responsible and lived with that burden every day.

As in all things, some positives results came out the experiences. They had made first contact with many species some of them became allies; helped countless people in need; charted new territory; acquired knowledge and data that would keep scientists busy for decades to come. But what she was most proud of was how her crew had grown in to a very close family and how new members that were added along the way found their place. Thinking particularly of Seven of Nine formerly Annika Hansen and her struggle to regain her humanity the Borg had taken from her when she was only a child. 18 years passed between her assimilation and the time her link to the collective consciousness hive mind was severed successfully by Voyager's Captain. Janeway felt responsible for the blue eyed tall blonde beautiful human female ex-Borg. At first, Seven fought her assimilation in to the human culture very step of the way. She tried unsuccessfully to go back to the technologically perfection driven cybernetic life-form; questioned Janeway's command decisions frequently and disagreed with her in front of her staff. But eventually, Janeway through patience, sometimes heated philosophical discussions and a growing admiration between the two women, the human in Seven resurfaced. From Janeway's perspective, Seven struggled but adapted quite admirably considering all the Borg conditioning she had to overcome.

Smiling at her thoughts of Seven, she went back to bed.

03h48

Yet again, fully aroused from a personally very disturbing dream she just had, Kathryn laid awake. Deciding to forget about it and push it out of her mind, she looked over to her left where rested her latest conquest. She had met the exquisite black hair scientist the previous night at another Starfleet function that she couldn't get out of. A graduate of the Daystrom Institute of Technology working at Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards, she was highly intelligent, charming and a very good dancer. Both of them not really interested in another round of politics with Starfleet's social elite, they left for Kathryn's home as soon as it was considered socially appropriate.

Making sure to not disturb the sleeping beauty, she got out of bed walked to the ensuite and then mumbled to herself about how last night encounter had quickly escalated in to a long sexual encounter. Unable to hide her disappointment, she looked in the mirror and said. "This is not who you are. You don't sleep around. You need to get to know people before you become intimate with them. You need to feel those emotional ties before... it turns in to something more physical. You have never been one of those who are just looking for sex."

She heard her little voice say. 'Yeah right… What did you think would happen after the captain and her crew came home? Come on Kate, you've been essentially sexually deprived for the last seven years.'

Clearly disagreeing with that statement, Kathryn put her hands on her hips and thrust her chin upward slightly.

Her little voice continued. 'Yeah, yeah… Kashyk, Michael, the hologram you haltered, and that other guy, Jaffen, when you were brainwashed. I know about those but they don't count and you know it.'

Janeway rolled her eyes.

'Don't you roll your eyes at me! They don't count and there is no point arguing about it either. Maybe Chakotay could have developed in to something but you and I know that a deep friendship was the only avenue possible for you two.'

Kathryn blushed as another thought entered her mind. Before she could otter a word, the voice continued on…

'Even if thinking of that special someone while masturbating can be pleasurable, it isn't the same either.'

The captain had no choice but to sigh in acknowledgment and responded. "It's not as though I had the choice… they were all members of my crew and Starfleet regulations and my duty as the captain on the ship limited my interactions with them." Thinking the conversation finally over, Janeway put a dark green silky robe and went downstairs over to the replicator in the kitchen an ordered.

"Coffee. Black."

Picking up the mug of her favorite drug, holding it gently in order to feel to warmth permeate through her hands she brought it to her nose and inhaled deeply. Before she had the chance to take her first sip her little voice began.

'Not to say that you don't need the coffee and not to imply that you didn't deserve more than your share in the Delta Quadrant for all the hell you had to go through.'

Testy from being interrupted again, she barked. "Get to the point!"

'Well, if you insist.'

Janeway closed her eyes and sighed.

'Caffeine is great but you know that warm and fuzzy feeling that washes over you each time you take your cup in you hands...'

"Yes?!?"

'Think about it genius… Is that feeling only around when you take your coffee or has it happened on other occasions?'

Walking briskly towards the large three level deck off the living room, Kathryn thought for a few moments and said, tired of this conversation with herself and not liking the direction it was taking. "I have never thought about it."

'No wonder you're awake and this god forsaken hour… you can't even find the courage to answer.'

Gently massaging starting at the bridge of her nose and going up and around her eyebrows, Janeway was trying to prevent the headache that she felt coming since the beginning of this conversation to fully develop.

'Have you wondered how come your intake of the stuff has increased significantly since you've been back on earth? Don't you lie to yourself and tell me it is 'work related'. I may only be, as you have so often dubbed me 'the little irritating 'tell it like it is voice of your sister Phoebe' but, once again I am right and you can't say otherwise.'

Now looking at the waves crashing on the rocky shoreline below, Kathryn frowned, took another sip of her coffee and trying to veer the conversation in another direction she questioned.

"Please tell me why you can't stay quiet now just as you had been for most the time spent in the Delta Quadrant?"

Knowing exactly what Kathryn was trying to do, she decided to indulge her for a while and said. 'Well, that's a stupid question if I ever heard one?'

No matter how good the massage, the captain now had a full blown headache. Sighing in frustration she decided to bring her cup under her nose and breathe in very slowly. "I won't let you win this time" she said. So instead of letting her temper get the better of her, she took a big gulp of her still very warm and slightly bitter drug of choice and waited for her little voice to resume her rationalization.

Sarcasm clearly evident in her tone, she began. 'Let me see, if I can put this in to words you can understand… First, over the first few years, you needed to meld a crew of Starfleet officers, Maquis and other non-regulation members in to a fully functioning family unit. You knew there wouldn't be any another way for all of you to not only survive but keep your humanity and sanity. There was no time for self-pity or wallowing in what might have been or what could possibly happen in the future. You had to lead by example.'

Continuing to drink her coffee, Janeway nodded in agreement.

'Second, you didn't need to be reminded every few seconds that 'hot stuff' Mark was on the other side of the galaxy. If you remember correctly, you already felt guilty enough for that. I came back for a few moments when you received that dear Kate letter but that was only so you wouldn't fall of the deep end. You and I know that you eventually moved on but you loved that man and needed some kind of kick in the butt to keep you going long enough for the captain to take over.'

Although she now looked miles away, Janeway was still nodding.

'Third, well I don't think you need to be reminded of why I had to stay away once that ex-Borg Nordic beauty came to town. I don't regret the few times I came out and made you act somehow a 'little' outside of what you consider 'taking chances'.'

Remembering, Janeway had to smile had the extreme audacity and unwavering resolve she had showed on her runs in with the Borg Queen.

Her little voice continued. 'You know why I did it, don't you?' Not letting Janeway time to think and respond she carried on. 'It's quite simple you could not have continued without her and your crew would have paid the ultimate price. She is the subject of your last conscious thought before you fall asleep and the first one when you wake up. Even when you did and still do try with all of your might to prevent and deny it, she is an integral part of your soul and being. She consistently fills your dreams, your nightmares, your musings, and your fantasies.'

Listening intently she remembered quite vividly the very erotic dream that had awaken her not even two hours after falling asleep, Kathryn's skin tingled and flushed a soft pink. Her heart rate increased and her breathing quickened and became shallow.

'See, there's all the physiological proof you need.'

Thanks to all of the recent practice and command training, Janeway got her responses under control and put her command mask on.

'Well… that little display brings me to my last point.

"There must be a God after all." The captain added sarcastically.

'Don't you make me take out the big guns. You know I'll do it.' The little voice warned.

Trying to get to the end as quickly as possible, Kathryn gave up and said "OK, OK… Please continue."

'Thank you… So as I had started to say. My last point is that even if I think that the captain's duty takes way too much of space in your life nowadays, I understood perfectly that it was how it had to be for all those years in the Delta Quadrant. Following the Prime Directive on that day by destroying the Array increased your burden as a commander immensely; you had no other viable alternative. So, being and acting first and foremost as a Starfleet captain was the way to go. I knew my place like I've always known. In fact, it was quite simple to recognize what was needed of me… which was observing from the back seat. The Captain had to be in control.'

Looking at her empty cup, Janeway's eyes were dark and stormy. She knew everything that had been said was exact but it didn't make the hollow feeling that had crept in any easier to accept. She closed her eyes and let the relaxing fragrance of the sea fill her senses back to some form of calm before she decided to go back in her house.

Just as she was reaching for the door, the voice began. 'Did you really think I was going to let you get away with it? It's definitely not going to happen. Even if you curse, scream, threaten, or act out whatever plan you can devise, we will finish this conversation once and for all. I am tired of this game you've been playing at my expense. I have been more than accommodating with you.'

Wanting to get this over with as soon as possible, Kathryn sighing heavily, walked back towards one of white and blue the lounge chairs on the deck that stood close to the large pool and sat… waiting for the inevitable lecture that was to follow.

She was not going to be disappointed when her little voice began. 'Both you and I know that you have always been a very physical woman, you love to touch and be touched. You have a profound need for physical contact… that overwhelming need to fell warmth envelop your body is not something that you can go without. When you were in the Delta Quadrant, you, the captain, needed to maintain a respectful distance between you and your crew. Sure you touched members of your crew to either get your point across, show support, concern or friendship but no one initiated that kind of contact towards you. This was not given back to you because the captaincy could not allow it and your crew felt it. So you either carried around your lucky mug full of warm coffee mug and a hot cup of tea depending on your mood. You didn't necessarily drink it. You needed that warmth and then something happened, something that let to the growth of that need. You wouldn't happen to have a clue as to what, huh?' Not waiting for a reply she continued. 'Shortly after we met with the Admiral Janeway from another timeline who gave you tools to come home from the Delta Quadrant your coffee intake increased to a level seen only twice before… it hasn't dropped since. You also have had numerous sexual encounters. I know the captain is out of the way so to speak but let's just say your sheets have not really had the time to get cold since we've been back.'

"Come on, it's not as though I have a commitment to uphold. They were all intriguing in some way and I had a nice time." Janeway said on the defensive.

''Nice time'… Not that I'm complaining mind you but you have practically 'fucked' every woman and man that challenged you intellectually. You've been especially 'active' when a particular couple from Voyager's senior staff shows up. I'll give you a hint… it's not B'Elanna and Tom.'

Janeway blinked, the pain in her eyes gave her away.

'No need to answer… You have been trying to forget and you know it is not working. You have not let anyone have the chance to get close to you. It is just sex... great sex. No emotional ties. You can't blame it on the men and women you've been with, some of them had real potential and you know it. But as they say, you can give your heart to someone if it is already owned by someone else… I am sorry to do this to you but the sexual ride we've been on has not fulfilled me at all when I compare it to the feelings that overcome me during that dream that I have been having regularly for the past three years. But now, the sight of the happy couple made the Captain take over again. Duty and friendship were put to the forefront again. The fact remains, I can not and will not go on like this much longer. I do not want to feel empty… I need more.' Having heard that heartfelt plea, Kathryn face and body language were marked by the emotional pain of a tortured soul. As if the personal emotional weight of these last few years came down on her all of a sudden, the Captain could not keep berried the profound distress she felt. She closed her eyes and silently a steady stream of tears started to flow down her cheeks. This had been a long time coming and she would not nor could she stop it from happening.

'Seven, Seven, Seven… that gorgeous, brilliant, captivating, compassionate, infuriating, wonderful woman... she sure has turned our world upside down since she came on board.' Sensing that Janeway couldn't take any more, the little voice decided it was better to let things be for a while.

05h51

Still sitting in her lounge chair, the Captain eyes were still puffy from crying. The pressure from her crying made her headache throbbed so much she thought she of didn't have one drop of water left in her body. She lifted herself up and walked to the replicator to recycle her cup, quickly drank two large glasses of water. Massaging her forehead with her right hand, she walked into the ensuite of her guestroom suite and splashed some cold water on her face and neck and then decided to take a long shower in order to erase the traces of her emotional outburst. Now refreshed from her long shower and dressed to exercise, the Captain looked in the mirror… satisfied with the results she walked to her desk in her study in to her and logged in to her console.

Personal Log:

"It is 06h27 I didn't get much sleep last night.

We have been back for almost five months now, I should be deliriously happy. I have brought them home... my crew, my family of the last seven years. The future that the Admiral, my other self, had experienced is now mute. Tuvok has started his treatment for the degenerative neurological condition that he was supposed to fall victim to. 22 crewmembers will not have to die trying to get to Earth from the Delta Quadrant including Seven of Nine."

'Seven of Nine is going to die.' Thinking back to the conversation aboard Voyager, she closed her eyes, her face showed the sign of extreme pain and anguish. After what seemed like an eternity of hurt to her but only lasted a few seconds in reality, she sighed and continued. "I remember exactly how I felt after hearing those words from the Admiral Janeway that came back from the future." She couldn't voice those feelings... she shouldn't, she would not. "Until the day I die, I will have to keep these thoughts to myself. It wasn't appropriate then it certainly isn't now!" She had raised her voice considerably in order to make a point to herself. "Duty is and has always come first. That is who I am. That is who kept my crew alive in extremely trying situations and ultimately brought them home."

Pondering over the content of her first meeting with Counselor Deanna Troi that was scheduled for 09h00 that morning, Janeway annoyed continued. "Maybe, this is the topic that will be covered in this morning's meeting with Deanna." Pausing her recording and deciding to put an end to thoughts that were of no real use to her she focused on the Betazoid chocolate desert lover Counselor for a few minutes. Recollecting recent history she smiled and continued, "When I first met her when we came back from the Delta Quadrant, I was uncomfortable with the fact that she was always around. Her presence was, to say the least, unnerving to me… Since I am no different from any upstanding Starfleet Captain, I have never liked to have my mind probed without my consent. So, she received the cold although very professional shoulder."

Smiling that crooked smile at how Deanna had been throughout those first two months, she shook her head from side to side and resumed her log entry. "I learned afterwards that Jean-Luc Picard, the captain of Starfleet's Flagship had pulled a few favors from old friends and bended a few elbows in order for her to be in charge of Seven of Nine and the ex-Maquis crew's debriefings. He wanted to make sure that the post war the Dominion influence on the Federation and the escalation of hostile feelings towards the Borg since Wolf 359 would be negated by her presence and vast experience at facilitating interpersonal relations. After keeping a close eye to these proceedings and making sure that my crew was treated fairly… and after being involved in more than a few 'chance meetings' with Deanna and her romantic interest, Will Riker, an old acquaintance of mine from my academy days and Picard's first officer, I had to change my mind about her. Although the captain in me is far from being at ease with the 'personal counseling process' I have come to respect Deanna a great deal. I value her opinion as a Starfleet officer, as a counselor and as a woman. I have witnessed first hand her unwavering dedication towards her patients. She has great emotional empathy and she does not like to beat around the bush unlike some other counselors I have had the displeasure of interacting with recently. She and Will make a remarkable couple." As she uttered the last words a cascade of images bombarded her mind… clear ice blue eyes, dark pink slightly parted full lips, creamy velvety skin, silky soft golden hair, perfectly shaped full breast and buttocks, flawlessly flat stomach, shapely legs that go on forever. Frustrated will herself for having no control of her more than ever wandering mind she paused her recording, she swore and slapped her thigh bringing her mind back to a proper subject. She closed her eyes, breath in and out very slowly… she once again had to draw on all of her training to get her racing heart and imagination under control. Once the command mask was in full force, the change in her demeanor was extraordinary. Suddenly, fine worry lines appeared around her mouth and eyes, back straight, shoulders at attention, blue eyes turned steel grey.

Now hiding her emotions deeply within, she resumed her log entry and said in an even voice. "Well, we will see what this meeting with Deanna will bring. For now, I need to get moving, go burn some calories and continue to get my body back in to shape."

06h51

Taking a pen and a piece of parchment paper, she wrote a message and left it on the night stand next for the lovely naked creature still asleep in her bed, it read.

Thank you for the memorable evening.
I enjoyed your presence immensely.
I have to be in early for meetings at Starfleet Headquarters.
Feel free to take your time and enjoy the view.
Don't worry about the house security system when you leave. I have set so it will turn on automatically as soon as you depart. The parameters can only be changed or activated on my command.

Kathryn Janeway

08h30 the same day in Arizona

Commander Chakotay, Voyager's former first officer, a Native American descendant, had just left for at least five weeks. He was going unaccompanied on a survival-retreat to get back in touch with his ancestors' ways in the Arizona desert. His stay in the Delta Quadrant had strengthened his spiritual beliefs and since his return to Earth he felt the need to go back to his roots to find inner peace.

He was conflicted with his emotions for Seven, they had started dating a few months before their return but he felt that their romantic relationship was not moving forward. In addition, Starfleet had offered him a teaching position at the Academy but he had not made his decision yet. So as he stood on the edge of the Grand Canyon in Arizona, he prayed his animal guide for guidance in his quest for harmony.

Earlier that morning, he had told Seven to go to Voyager's Captain and resolve the issues that were left standing between the two women. The ex-Borg had been very upset at his request, stating that she should not push the older woman in to some kind of confrontation since she barely had the chance to talk to her anymore and she did not want to lose what was left a her friendship. But Chakotay was adamant as he said to Seven. "The least you can do is find out what could have affected so negatively your relationship with the Captain. I do not think it would be in our best interest for us to allow this to fester. It needs to be resolved before we can both move forward."

08h45

Seven had made her decision. She would follow Chakotay's advice and find out what Kathryn Janeway was hiding from her. She walked over to the computer console in the house she shared with Chakotay and began her research. As data came, in she kept saying to herself. 'Failure is unacceptable. Resistance is futile.'

08h58

After running at a face pace for close to 45 minutes, lifting weights for 30 and stretching for another 15 minutes, the Captain when into the ensuite in her new office showered and changed into her uniform. Sometimes, she missed the feel of her old one but she understood perfectly the changes made. Since the conflicts with the Borg and the Dominion war had left Starfleet with severely depleted ranks the organization had to adapt and this change was easy to live with. The old uniform made it very easy for enemies to identify commanding officers, now the task was more difficult.

Hungry, she just had the time to grab some fresh fruits, orange juice and a blueberry muffin to eat before running for her meeting with Counselor Troi, she arrived 2 minutes early.

Having adjusted the parameters of the window between her office and the reception area, so that she could see but not be seen, Deanna Troi waited for Janeway to arrive.

Fresh out of the Academy, the 27 year old ensign had been excited ever since, the Counselor had asked her to keep Captain Kathryn Janeway waiting for 5 minutes before announcing her and showing her in. The Captain was a hero to her for as long as she could remember, she had read every single piece of information she could get her hands on. But she was not only that to her, Captain Kathryn Janeway was the embodiment of both physical and mental perfection. What she felt for the Captain could only be described as head over heels in love. She could hardly contain her excitement when she saw the auburn hair woman walk in to the reception area, she stood at attention.

Smiling, Janeway greeted. "Ensign. I have an appointment with Counselor Troi at 09h00."

The younger woman couldn't help but look back in to those wonderful blue grey eyes that were studying her intensely and said, her voice somewhat wavering. "Certainly, captain." 'God she's beautiful, I could watch her all day and night and still be amazed... I'm just glad I remembered to address her as 'captain' and not as 'Ma'am' or 'Sir' as she prefers.'

When the young ensign did not make a move to announce her arrival, Janeway took notice of the shimmering dark pools staring at her. Recognizing the look she had seen quite a few times in her career, she smiled and said to the obviously smitten the tall woman. "Ensign, what is your name?"

"DiScala… Deedrah DiScala." 'That voice is so sexy, I wonder how it would feel to hear her say in the throws of passion with her mouth on my ear 'Oh De… Please De… I want you to love me…Please De… I need to feel your touch…' If there is a God please hear my plea.'

Noticing in the younger woman eyes definite signs of arousal, and observing the racing heartbeat, shallow breathing and flushing skin, the Captain said still smiling but lacing her voice with command undertones, "Ensign DiScala. Please let Counselor Troi know that I have arrived. I am certain her time is precious."

"Sorry Captain." 'Damn, I'm acting like a lovesick teenager without a brain. She certainly won't be impressed with that kind of behavior.'

Seeing the blinking light on the communication's device, she remembered what the Counselor had asked of her and said. "Captain, Counselor Troi isn't quite ready to see you. I'm certain in will only be a few moments. She is very strict about keeping her schedule." 'Finally I said a complete sentence without sounding like a moron.'

The Captain had decided to walk over to the window while she waited, she loved looking in to the garden at Starfleet Headquarters. She remembered fondly Boothby, the groundskeeper, the fresh roses he used to give her for her quarters and how he had helped her get through the tougher times at the Academy. She smiled again and to herself. 'The Academy owes you more than I can say, I am sure you will continue to help countless others. Long life to you Boothby, I will find the time and meet with you soon.'

Deedrah still observing thought. 'I wonder if she finds me attractive... Come on Dee… Every man or woman I have encountered over the last ten years couldn't help but look me over at least once. Even Captain Picard did it, when he came by last week while the Enterprise was in orbit. He was certainly very discreet about it and actually, it was very flattering... But what about you captain, what kind of woman makes you want to lose your control? I would bet she would have to be brilliant, compassionate, driven, opinionated, sexy and adventurous. Do I have a chance to get under that skin of yours? Mmmm… I am sure your skin is soft and highly responsive.'

Feeling as though the younger woman was boring holes in her being, Janeway turned slightly to her left to have a better look at the reflection of Ensign DiScala she was seeing in the window. A flow of emotions was reflected on the woman's features: anxiety, fear, pride, smugness, confidence, longing and lust. Taking the opportunity to observe the ensign, Janeway had to admit she was certainly one of the most beautiful woman she had ever seen. 5' 9"; athletic but very feminine… like a dancer's body; a perfect face; deep and expressive dark eyes; a sensual smile; long wavy dark chocolate hair. 'Yep, I am convinced that her sultry, dark looks, incredible figure has been the subject of many erotic dreams. Don't you want to add her to your list of conquest? She sure seems interested.' Janeway little voice said.

The older woman did not have the time to respond to the comment before Deedrah said. "Captain Janeway?"

Kathryn turned around and looked directly at the beautiful woman. "Yes Ensign DiScala. Is there something you wanted to say?"

Her heart thundering in her chest the taller woman decided to throw caution to the wind before she lost her nerve and spoke. "I hope I am not going to regret being this bold but I was wondering if you would be interested in having coffee with me. I know this great coffee place near the harbor, the music is wonderful and I would love to know how reading poetry has helped you through your career. I attended a seminar where you were a guest and I found the comment you made particularly intriguing." Intelligent eyes looked in to shocked questioning blue ones.

Before Kathryn could answer, Deanna came out of her office and said. "I am sorry to have kept you waiting, Kathryn. Won't you please step inside my office." Taking Kathryn by the arm, she led her in to her professional sanctuary and asked. "How about a fresh cup of non replicated coffee? I have a friend who brings me Kona beans every year. I only share it with coffee addicts that have spent a minimum of five years in the Delta Quadrant."

Laughing at Deanna's attempt at bribery, she smiled and said. "Deanna, I think you must be a spy a some sort because I have been trying to get that stuff since I've been back to Earth and I can't anyone to sell me this. He or she must be some friend. I thought it was illegal to export it, have the laws changed?"

"If I share my treasure with you when you come over will you keep my illegal activities secret?" The Counselor teased.

"Well, I am an addict after all. Addicts will do anything to get their hands on their drug of choice." Janeway quipped.

"So. Black, strong correct?" Deanna asked.

"Yes, please."

The Counselor walked over and began to prepare the hot beverage. While doing so, she reviewed what she had just witnessed since Janeway's arrival in the reception area.

As soon as she had seen Kathryn enter and walk over to her assistant, she'd taken the time to observe her unnoticed. Over the past few months, the Counselor had gotten to know Kathryn Janeway, the proud and rightfully famed Starfleet Officer but the woman was fiercely guarded. It was a common theme among Starfleet captains. Most of the great ones she had encountered over her career have their command mask on, seeing them without it was a privilege that was rarely granted. Captain Picard, considered by many to be amongst the best to ever serve Starfleet, had been a prime example in her personal experience. He also safeguarded his private persona with extreme caution. So it was no surprise to her when the Captain walked in with her 'commanding offer's aura' firmly in place.

Being of a small stature herself, it always amazed the Counselor how such a petite woman as Kathryn could seem larger than life and literally intimidate much larger beings just by her non verbal language. It's not that you felt threatened… it's as though you were in close contact to a great power source. You felt the need to respect that power and ultimate confidence that emanated from her.

Since her assignment to Voyager's crew, she had seen the smile the Captain greeted her assistant with on many occasions, it was the one she used to convey 'Hello, you know who I am but let me tell you anyway so you recognize who's in charge here'. It was always done with such charm and grace that people usually fell over themselves. Today was certainly a prime example of this, Ensign DiScala seemed to loose all coherent thought process. If Deanna didn't know any better she would have ordered Deedrah to have herself evaluated by Starfleet Medical because the normally supremely confident and composed woman was acting like a hormonal teenager faced with the object of her adulation. She had seen how men and women alike acted around the very intelligent, exquisite young officer but it was an unusual sight to witness Deedrah's state at meeting Kathryn Janeway. Many 'famed' officers had come to visit with the Counselor since her stay became somewhat permanent in Starfleet Headquarters and Ensign DiScala had always greeted them with respect but this reaction could only be described as 'sweet'. So when it became obvious that her choice of assistant had been wise indeed, she had smiled at herself and at the reaction from Deedrah.

Since failure in her mission was not a possibility that Starfleet Command had the luxury to envision, Deanna had to resort to a little cunning. It was undoubtedly a 'last resort' and she didn't appreciate having to use it but she had sensed that it could come to this from the beginning. So she had prepared just in case and carefully chosen Ensign DiScala after her first meeting with the much shielded and very professional cold shoulder of Voyager's Captain.

Her detailed interview with the tall dark sensual beauty had brought to the forefront the extremely strong feelings the woman felt for Janeway. Not only did the Deedrah admire the captain's dedication, brilliance, resourcefulness, scientific knowledge and devotion to her crew, she also loved the woman's compassion, sense of humor, competitiveness, stubbornness and passion for life and living.

She remembered how, during her interview, Deedrah had explained in detail how she had gained access to her knowledge of the Kathryn Janeway the woman. She said that before Voyager was lost in the Badlands she had contacted every person that was close to Janeway in order to get to know the woman behind. She had received many polite refusals citing that Janeway was a very private individual that did not want her privacy invaded by anyone she had not personally approved of beforehand. After learning of the faith of the Starship, she had relentlessly pursued the men and women close to Janeway. After many unsuccessful tries over the years, some had finally succumbed to the persistent woman after Starfleet had officially declared them 'lost'. She wanted to write a biography on Janeway and her experiences over the years. It had started has hero worship but had grown in to deep feelings of one-sided respect, devotion and love. Even if she was born in to a Starfleet family, she had never felt the need to follow in her parents' footsteps. It was after one of her friends had forced her to come listen to a specific speaker at a scientific conference citing how absolutely intriguing the research subject was. Deedrah had always been a scientific at heart and had gone on that basis alone. It was that chance encounter that had made her look at the possibility of a Starfleet Academy training. She still went on to Berkeley where she got a masters degree in astrophysics and another one in psychology but kept that possibility in mind. So seven years ago, after the loss of Voyager and her crew, she decided that once she completed the graduate diplomas she had begun she would enter Starfleet Academy and follow the footsteps of her hero and disappeared secret love.

Deanna had seen how Janeway had been patient with the smitten ensign and treated her as if nothing were amiss. The Captain had seemed flattered of the attention but nothing else. She couldn't but what she felt in to words but she knew from looking at the commanding officer that she was weary. She had sensed that many before but today the feeling was more intense. When she heard Deedrah ask Janeway out for 'coffee' she knew it was time to intervene.

With a hot cup of coffee in her left hand for Janeway and a hot chocolate in her right, she turned and walked towards where Kathryn stood and handed her her cup.

Janeway thanked the Counselor and brought the cup to her nose and let that addictive smell fill her senses and them she took a sip and said teasing. "God Deanna, if you weren't involved with Will I think I would be tempted to have my feelings exposed by you just to have a chance to have this exquisite coffee every day. It is perfection."

Laughing, Deanna answered. "I will take that as a compliment and tell my friend to keep the beans coming."

Both taking the time to enjoy their drug of choice, it was finally Kathryn that broke the silence that ensued. "Tell me Deanna, what is the purpose of my presence here today."

The long curly black haired woman motioned for Janeway to take a seat and said as she seated herself diagonally in her favorite navy blue leather chair. She took another sip of her hot chocolate to collect her thoughts and lifted her dark eyes to meet Janeway's blue grey ones and said. "How do you feel about Seven of Nine and Chakotay as a couple?"

If her eyebrows could have disappeared from her forehead, Janeway would have lost them. Shocked by the line of questioning she answered. "What does it have to do with my presence here?"

"Everything." Deanna replied calmly.

"There must me something that I am not getting here… What do you want to know?"

"Your feelings regarding their relationship, that's all."

Janeway thought 'What does she want me to say? I'm so happy that the woman that means more to me than life itself is not with me. Let's start with something safe.' Kathryn took time to drink some more coffee before saying calmly. "I think Chakotay is a wonderful man. He is kind, gentle, loyal, courageous and with deep moral convictions with which he lives by. Any person would be lucky to know him on a personal level."

Sensing that the Captain was sensing a deception she didn't tell her that she could feel her attempt at trying to veer her responses in another direction. She could hide her non verbal language very well but not for someone of Deanna talents and biological heritage. Instead she asked about Seven of Nine.

"What would you like to know?" The epitome of serenity, Janeway responded in an even voice.

'Come on Kathryn. These games cannot last long with me, you know this and I know you know this.' That's what she almost blurted out but instead she patiently retorted "Tell me how you feel about her?"

"Seven is without a doubt the most brilliant being I have ever met. I am astounded by what she has overcome. Most people see her as cold but her aloofness is only a self-protection mechanism. You see when she is uncomfortable she goes back to where feelings were irrelevant… to her Borg mannerism. Her humanity has reasserted itself and she is learning everyday as the rest of us but she will always be part Borg." Janeway stopped talking and thought of her experiences in the Delta Quadrant and added. "I can say without a doubt that if it wasn't for her genius and selflessness we would in all probability be dead right now. She saved all of our lives many times over the last for years. She cares a great deal about her collective and will go to great lengths to protect us from harm."

Getting up from the chair she was getting uncomfortable in, Janeway took the last of the coffee and went over the window to look towards the Golden Gate Bridge.

Deanna waited and observed the woman try to hide the emotions she was feeling from her. She knew she was conflicted. She just wanted Janeway to admit to it. It would be the beginning on the road to recovery.

Deanna waited since the Captain did not want to add to her comments she said. "This is a view I will never go tired of. I find it very peaceful. What about you?"

"My favorite time is when the fog comes rolling in and blankets the bay with a soft velvety touch at sunset and its rays leave a warm golden glow onto everything they touch." Kathryn answered truthfully.

Turning towards the Counselor who was now standing a few feet behind her, the small auburn haired women asked with a crooked smile "Could I bother you for another cup of that perfection?"

Taking the cup from the captain's hand, she went over to the coffee machine and started the process again. Deanna knew this coffee was beyond delicious but she was aware that Kathryn was utilizing it as a stalling tactic.

Looking from time to time over to the commanding officer who was still staring out the window, she decided to adopt another line of questioning.

As she was walking back to Kathryn with a now full cup of coffee, she commented. "I have been to your sister's art gallery. Her work is absolutely fabulous. It is full of life. Her paintings flow freely without constraints. It must be a joy to have someone like her in your life."

Smiling, she closed her eyes and shook a head slightly for side to side. "My sister and I love each other immensely but we have never seen eye to eye."

"In what sense?"

Her response was fired rapidly without thinking of the consequence. "For one, there is Starfleet. Although she's proud of what I have accomplished she can't stand all the rules, regulations and the chain of command. She says their killing me, taking a little chunk out of me every day." Her little voice chimed in. 'Damn Kate… I didn't think you were listening to her. I agree with her.'

Sensing her discomfort for revealing something so personal, the Counselor countered. "Duty was, is and will probably be a very big part of every great Starfleet captain."

Letting her last comment sink in, she added after a few moments. "How do you find a balance between Kathryn Janeway 'the captain' and Kathryn Janeway 'the woman'?"

"How does Jean-Luc Picard do it?" the small spirited woman retorted.

'Oh no my captain… you won't be able to get me to fall in to that trap.' Deanna thought then she said with a knowing smile. "Captain Picard is not the one I am interested in, you are. So how do you do it?"

'She's not letting you get away with it.' Her little voice commented. Janeway sighed heavily and asked. "Don't you have any other person to see?"

Having expected that one coming for a long time, she responded with the negative, shrugged her shoulders some and gestured towards Janeway to answer.

Having to admit getting caught by Deanna, Janeway frowned a little and drank some coffee before replying. "The Delta Quadrant pretty much to care of that balance. There was no place for Kathryn Janeway the woman. I would have gotten my crew killed in the process if I had let her rule." Her little voice added 'That's not true. We discussed this when you were unable to sleep this morning… remember… Seven would not be here if the woman had not showed up a few times and there would be a couple of species that would have vanished also.'

Knowing full well that the answer the Captain had just given did not reflect exactly what happened during those seven years, she decided to not pursue the matter further. Instead, the Counselor inquired. "What about now?"

'Yeah… what about now Kate?' The little voice echoed.

Janeway sat on a chair and continued to enjoy her cup of coffee.

After watching Janeway in silence for a few minutes while they both finished their drink, the Counselor queried. "If I was to say that you seem particularly conflicted this morning, what would you say to that statement?"

Janeway closed her eyes as her shoulders slumped noticeably. "I would say that you would be right on the money." Her voice barely a whisper.

A few minutes passed by again without Janeway making any kind of effort to communicate. Tired of wasting precious time, Deanna decided yet again on another approach and stated. "Kathryn, you know that I can sense your feelings. Since I have had the privilege of getting to know you I know that you appreciate straightforwardness as well as I do. Given that the little 'hide and seek' game we've been playing all morning does not seem to be getting us anywhere let me be blunt."

The Counselor took a big cleansing breath and continued. "Starfleet Command wants to give you a promotion but they are concerned with your emotional stability. I am only here to help you get through the obvious inner turmoil you have been living with for some time now."

Deanna waited a few second then added. "Starfleet has given me complete access."

When Janeway frowned severely at that her eyes turning steel grey, Deanna continued but lifted her hand so Janeway would not interrupt her. "I have the authority to unseal your personal logs. Don't worry. I have no intention of using that right. Starfleet Command knows how valuable you are to them in every sense of the word. They want to help."

Leaning forward and putting her hand on her knee, Deanna said as Janeway's eye stared at her. "Kathryn, every one that truly knows you understand how the past years have been extremely difficult for the woman in you. You have been literally isolated without any means of personal support. The burden of command that you had to endure alone has weighted heavily on your shoulders. I am here to give you access to what every captain have when they go on deep space mission… a means to vent and to share. It certainly isn't the same as having a life partner to share with but still."

Leaving her hand on Janeway's left knee. "How do you feel about what I have just said?"

Without taking the time to her thoughts, her fingers digging in to the soft arm of the chair she was sitting in, Janeway said angrily. "I am extremely frustrated. I know what you are telling me is true but I just can't seem to get past it. It is a though a door has been closed and I can't find the key. I am also sad because I want to have deeper relationship with people I meet. Sometimes I find myself thinking of how stupid all of this is. I mean, we went to the Badlands to get the Maquis back to justice and ended up utterly alone 70 000 light years from home. I lost good people for what. The reason I went there in the first place is of no consequence now. But then I think of the people we helped, the family we created, the close relationships that developed. Tom and B'Elanna, their daughter Miral, Naomi, Neelix, Kes, Seven. Deanna, the captain in me has taken over for so long. I want the woman in me to be free to express herself but I don't know how." When she finished speaking her voice was barely a whisper.

Squeezing Janeway knee in support and encouragement, Deanna stated. "That's good. Acknowledgment is a big step. Actually, it is the first law of change. In order for a person to get better she must acknowledge that there is something that she has a problem with or that she wishes to modify."

Deanna sat back in her chair but leaned towards Janeway who had lifted her gaze to meet hers. "Well, we are back to my original question. What do you feel about the relationship between Seven of Nine and Chakotay?"

Feeling cornered, Janeway got up and looked at Deanna and said. "I need to think. I will get back to you to let you know how I am doing. I'm not sure that pushing me to answer right now would not be advisable." Before she left she added. "Thank you for the coffee Deanna, it truly was perfection."

Before she could otter a word, the door had closed behind Janeway. Immediately she reached for her console, taped the appropriate control and entered her command key so she could see and hear what was happening in the reception area.

Once the Counselor and the Captain had made their way into the office, Ensign DiScala had berated herself for her lack of control. "What is wrong with you Dee? Do you think she could have looked more surprised?" Sighing heavily she walked to her desk and continued her self-deprecating remarks. "Maybe I should have kissed her then I would be certain to be but on report for misconduct? At least I would have something to show for my idiocy? What must she think of me? I acted like a love-struck hormonal kid." Thinking of the order she had receive from the commander she added. "God… Deanna must have heard and seen the whole incident. Of course she did. She never asks me to keep people waiting without a purpose except when she wants to study their behavior. Let's just hope I still have a position to come to after she finishes with Captain Janeway." She sat in her chair and covered her face with her hands.

A few minutes later, Deedrah had started on the work she wanted to get done. Sarcastic… "At least everything won't be lost. Maybe the Commander has grown to appreciate the work I have done enough, that I won't be out on the curb by the end of the day." Deciding the best way to help her situation was to just keep on working as efficiently as she had before.

2 hours later she had finished what she had set out to do for the whole day when the door to Counselor's office opened and she overheard the Captain spoke before say "…not be advisable… Thank you for the coffee Deanna, it truly was perfection."

She stood at attention and said quickly looking straight ahead. "Captain?"

Janeway turned to look in the direction the voice came from.

Seeing the commanding officer walk towards her, the younger woman remained ramrod straight and continued. "I am sorry Captain for my unacceptable behavior earlier. I did not mean to offend you. I will accept whatever disciplinary action you think is appropriate Captain."

Janeway blinked, she had forgotten about Ensign DiScala. Her mind was still reeling from the emotions brought forth by the previous meeting. She looked at the younger woman for a few moments to organize her thoughts but before she could say anything her little voice began. 'Come on Kate. Look at her… She wants to get to know you. What do you say? Wouldn't it be nice to have someone look at you with loving eyes? Someone who's not only the Captain? And if it leads to something more… I'm always ready. Kate… look at her… she's stunning and she wants you.' By the end of this little tirade, Kathryn was angry by now with herself and her desperate need for companionship and her fear of intimacy.

The younger woman was becoming uncomfortable with Janeway's now steel grey eyes and clenched jaw. She had heard of how Janeway glare had different intensity levels and how one could definitely bore through duranium. To her, it looked as though its intensity was definitely closer to the duranium level than the mild reprimand one. She didn't know what to do so she thought it better to just wait and let the Captain lead the way.

The Captain looked down, closed her eyes and took a few deep cleansing breaths. Walking around the desk and coming to a rest close to the young officer, she looked in to her shimmering deep beautiful eyes and began her voice low and even. "Ensign DiScala. Although I think you could certainly use a refresher course in proper etiquette as to your choice of conversation with a superior officer it is more how you are utilizing your position in Counselor's Troi office that I am worried about. Please correct me if I am not stating your position correctly but you are the assistant of one of the most highly effective and respected Counselor in Starfleet history. A position that she could have filled with a more experienced officer but she chose you. Has Counselor Troi made an error?"

The young officer was speechless.

Janeway held her hand up and said. "Don't answer." She then walk back and forth and came to stand again in the woman personal space and carried on. "Then tell me this Ensign DiScala, was this morning a display of your habitual level of competency as an assistant or is there something more that I haven't had the privileged of witnessing?"

The ensign's eyes were now showing signs of profound frustration and dissatisfaction, her hands were balled in to fists. She opened her mouth to speak but thought better to let her temper get the better of her. She closed her eyes took a deep breath and asked. "Permission to speak freely Captain?"

Janeway nodded in agreement.

"Captain. I am sorry for being so straightforward with you but over the past twelve years I have followed your career with great interest. I have interviewed numerous persons that have had the privilege of knowing you professionally and personally. In fact, it is your passion for science and Starfleet that ignited in me this undeniable need to follow your footsteps. So forgive my enthusiasm for meeting for the first time the person who has had and still has the most influence in my life. Nevertheless, it was very rude of me and I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you Captain." Stopping for a second to catch her breath she concluded. "And Captain, I am not a babbling hormonal idiot although I certainly gave you every indication of being one. I have worked diligently to get to were I am today. I appreciate the opportunity Counselor Troi has given me, she believes in my potential and today's incident was but one exception. With a little time and your patience, I am certain I will also meet your approval Captain." As she finished, the eyes that bore in to Janeway's showed the fiery passion and deep belief of Ensign DiScala.

The commanding officer observed the younger woman's body language for a few seconds then partly rested on the corner of the assistant's desk with one leg hanging and the other on the ground. She looked up to the woman who was standing again at attention and said with a small smile upturn at the left side of her mouth. "Good. I would hate to think that your overture was a sign of your diplomatic talents." Smiling now, Janeway added after a moment. "Recently, I have become the focus of attention of many people but it was refreshing to have someone so clearly demonstrate and verbalize their intent." As she talked, Kathryn could observe a slow blush creeping on the woman's beautiful features. "Don't be sorry to feel. As it relates to professional circumstances, I am convinced you will learn with experience to channel it appropriately."

The younger woman was again speechless. She could not believe how she could feel even more drawn towards this person in such a short time. 'Get yourself under control for Pete's sake. She's not asking you for anything so chill!' She thought.

When she realized the ensign would not speak Janeway said. "So… I will meet you here at 17h00. We can walk to the place you mentioned. I will gladly listen to all your questions but I reserve the right to choose the ones I will answer. I am certain we can also have a bite to eat at the same time. I will be in casual attire but feel free to wear whatever makes you comfortable."

The ensign was dumbfounded. She looked to Janeway as if she had just grown another head. She blinked a few times before she realized that the older woman was waiting for some kind of acknowledgment and quickly said. "Yes, Captain."

Janeway nodded, stood and left without saying another word.

11h51 Arizona

3 hours, 6 minutes and 17 seconds had passed since she'd interfaced with the computer console. After reviewing the teraquads of data she had accessed, she had many theories regarding what could have or did occur that could have affected her relationship with Captain Janeway so negatively. In the last months, she talked at length with Chakotay, sharing her concern with Janeway's behavior towards her and them as a couple. He had listened patiently and offered words of reassurance but she found it peculiar that he had never tried to explain her behavior.

She concluded that her emotional and physical withdrawal had started a little before their return from the Delta Quadrant. The weekly velocity games they used to share were abandoned. The reason the older woman cited was lack of time for personal endeavors. The frequent philosophical discussions they had over various aspects of humanity were now nonexistent. It was as if she did not want to relate to her outside of Voyager and Starfleet. She felt abandoned by her mentor, her friend and confidant.

Now, the only time she had the chance to interact with her was when at the Starfleet events where Voyager's former senior staff was required to attend. Even then, she would greet them and ask out of politeness how she was adapting to life of Earth. Seven wanted to reach out to the Captain but she never could. Janeway would make an excuse to get away, saying that she needed to mingle with Starfleet's brass. Invariably distraught, Seven would then seek Chakotay, he would hug her tightly, kiss her hair and tell her that the Captain needed time and that she would eventually come to her. Not long after she would watch her leave in the arms of some beautiful woman or handsome man and there was no doubt as to what the couple would do once they reached their destination. It was like clock work and the weight of it all was unacceptable. She had tried to say that the emotions she felt were irrelevant and inefficient but it did not help.

There was only one person who would answer her questions and validate her theories. The decision was clear. She left the house and walked quickly to the central transporter station. She waited a few seconds for the people who were there before to get to their destination and stepped up on the dais and stated. "Starfleet Headquarter, San Francisco." Remembering she added. "Please and thank you."

12h00

Deanna walked out of her office and said to Deedrah as she looked up. "Come and have lunch with me. I think we both deserve a break from the morning's events."

Forgetting how the Betazoid woman could sense her emotions, Deedrah stood and followed the Counselor and thought. 'She heard the whole thing. She always knows everything that is happening in her office. I just hope she shares the Captain's opinion.'

Deanna just smirked and said. "Don't worry Deedrah, the Captain and I are one the same page." She looked over her shoulder to see a very relieved ensign and teased. "It was interesting to have the rare chance to see you so flustered." Now giggling a little she continued. "I don't think the Captain has ever been propositioned quite so by a junior officer before. It certainly was a learning experience for me."

Deedrah sighed a little and said. "I deserved that one. God, I think someone took over my mind and proceeded to make me out to be a hormonal teenager with only the 'Oh mama, I want some of that' brain working."

The Counselor laughed at the wording used by the younger woman.

"I feel like seafood. Would that be to your liking?" Deanna asked.

Seeing the other woman nod her approval, she said. "There an adorable little place a few minutes walk from here. It would be perfect for us to talk in private and the food is fantastic. Let's go there."

A short time later, while they were eating away at a nice comfortable discreet table, Deedrah commented. "You were absolutely right this is a wonderful establishment. I love how they manage to get every table secluded from the others. The food is delicious. The music is soft and relaxing. I guess you've been here often." The last being more a statement than a question.

Deanna answered. "Truth is I love to come here but it's not for the obvious reasons you've mentioned. I can't wait to get my hands on the best Ktarian chocolate puff in the galaxy. I have tried to get them to give me the recipe but I guess they like having me around. Fact is, I like to come here every chance I get."

They were about to order dessert when Deanna said in a warm and friendly tone. "Deedrah, I know what the Captain means to you but please be careful and do not let only your deep feelings for her lead your actions tonight. I would hate for you to be disappointed or hurt in some way."

The younger woman looked at her questioningly and responded. "Why would I be disappointed or hurt? I have been looking forward to this for as long as I can remember."

Deanna did not want to discuss the numerous sexual conquests she had seen the Captain amass since she had been back to Earth so she just said again. "Your feelings for her are son powerful you could overlook the effects her career has had. I only ask you to think while you are out with her tonight. Don't get me wrong, I know the Captain is a truly fascinating, brilliant, vibrant, compassionate beautiful inside and out woman. She has a very magnetic personality that's all I am saying."

"Is this about the rumors that say she has had numerous lovers since she has been back?" She inquired. When Deanna did not say anything she took it as a sign of approbation. "Who in their right mind would think that she would wait for something that she has in all probability been deprived of for seven years? I consider myself a passionate individual and I think that Kathryn Janeway is no different. Let's say I brought them home before I went crazy with need for companionship that I could not and would not allow myself to get from a member of my crew even if I had developed strong feelings for them. The first thing I would do once I got here is go in to sexual overdrive. Who would blame her? Who would not do the exact same thing she's been probably doing that is if the rumor mill is on the money?"

Deanna smiled at the young woman and nodded. "You obviously know what you are getting yourself in to so I won't say anything further about it then."

Deedrah took the hand that Deanna had on the table and gently squeezed it and said genuinely appreciative. "Thank you for caring Counselor. It means a lot to me."

One their way back from what both of them described as an experience they should try again soon. Deanna said. "Since you have already finished the work that I had outlined for you today, I think it would be a good learning experience for you to go over to the Psychology Research Department and spend some time observing the work environment and the relationship between the different teams. I will expect a detailed report in which you'll explain what changes could be made to improve efficiency and how you would go about implementing theses changes."

The ensign nodded having already been there a few times and knowing what she wanted to observe again.

13h40

To Deanna's surprise, Seven of Nine waiting for her once she returned to her office. She noticed the tall blonde Nordic beauty seemed uncomfortable and very anxious. She lifted her left arm towards her office door and said with a warm genuine smile. "Seven, what a delightful surprise, please come into my office."

"Thank you Counselor Troi." Answered Seven as she entered the Counselor's private office.

Seeing the ex-Borg fidget with the PADD she carried, Deanna asked. "I'm going to make myself a cup a tea, would you like something to drink as well?"

Seven cooked her head to the right and wondered why she was acting so inefficiently and decided "I will further my knowledge by experiencing the same liquid refreshment Counselor. Please."

Handing a cup to Seven, Deanna mentioned. "I know you prefer to stand but if you don't mind I will use my chair."

Seven nodded her approval. She brought her cup to her nose to appreciate the aroma, took a careful sip of her tea and filed the new data to her memory. "This is acceptable. Thank you."

Knowing this was high praise coming from the ex-Borg, Deanna responded in kind with a smile. "You are very welcome."

After seeing saw how much the Counselor had to look up in order to make eye contact, Seven accessed her memory file of Captain Janeway. She remembered how the commanding officer had said having to look up so much gave her a 'kink in her neck'. She then decided to sit since she did not want to make Deanna Troi uncomfortable.

The Counselor was always amazed by the way Seven sat, her back ramrod straight, hands clasped together where her bent knees touched. She looked to be from a time when 'prim and proper' was the norm. 'There is no way the Borg taught her that skill.' she thought.

"What made you decide to sit Seven?" Deanna inquired.

"So you do not get a 'kink in your neck'." Seven responded coolly.

The Counselor smiled brightly and said. "Thank you, that is very thoughtful of you, Seven."

Drinking her tea and observing the lanky beautiful blue eyed blonde, Deanna waited for the usually blunt woman to speak. A few moments passed before she Deanna stated. "The last time we spoke privately was almost 3 months ago. You were looking forward to working with the great minds of science at Utopia Planitia Shipyards, at the Daystrom Institute and here at Starfleet Headquarters. Have you made a decision as to where you would like to settle? I am certain everyone would love to have you as a permanent member of their team."

"I have not made my final decision. Every situation has its advantages and I am still learning how every team works." Taking a few seconds to decide the most efficient way to get Counselor Troi's help she continued. "Counselor Troi I have a… personal matter I wish to discuss with you, would you be agreeable to help?" Seven stated nervously.

"Why don't you tell me everything you think is relevant and then we can go from there?"

Seven nodded and began telling her in detail what her morning's research had brought forth. Before continuing to unveil her theories she asked. "Counselor, your relationship with the Captain how would you characterize it?"

Surprised by this question, Deanna answered truthfully. "I have come to consider her a friend, someone I can ask for frank advise and someone I could depend on if I needed help… What about you Seven… your relationship with the Captain?" As she asked the question, she saw only briefly pain, sorrow and longing reflected in those ice blue eyes before the expression became composed again.

"I do not know. When I was first from the Collective, we were at odds often. I challenged her authority, her command decisions to a point where being confined to the brig or Cargo Bay 2 was familiar to me. After many philosophic discussions with her I further analyzed the events that had led to my punishment and it became evident to me that the Captain was a resourceful, passionate, wise, strong willed, extremely intelligent although somewhat reckless individual. I became to look to her as a mentor. Eventually I thought of her as a friend. We spent a lot of time of our personal time together playing Velocity, discussing various topics, spending time exploring different art forms in the Da Vinci Studio. Her constant guidance has helped me greatly in becoming an individual again. Now I do not know. I think the Captain has distanced herself from me ever since I told her a lie."

Before Seven could continue, Deanna asked. "What was the lie Seven?"

Sighing slightly at having to tell something she was not proud of to the Counselor, she answered meekly. "In order to feel stronger deeper human emotions, I ran a simulation for 49 hours over six days. During that time, I became negligent in my duty in the point of putting Voyager in danger. When the Captain confronted me about it I told her that I had been developing a new gravimetric array. I apologized for my lapse in judgment. She accepted my apology but before I left her Ready Room she said 'We all make mistakes, Seven. I've even been known to make a few myself. It sounds intriguing, your new gravimetric array. When this crisis is over I'd be happy to take a look. Maybe I can lend a hand.' When she said those words, her vocal range, her skin and eye color changed to parameters I have observed before when I knew she knew she was lied to. I have never to told her what I had been doing but if she wanted to the Doctor would have been obliged to inform her. I had put the ship in danger with my experiment and she had every right to ask. She never mentioned it again and ever since, she has distanced herself from me. It is a though my friendship has become irrelevant to her. She acts in a very professional captain-like manner towards me." She finished with her shoulders sagging and her voice down to a mere whisper.

Sensing Seven's emotional turmoil, the Counselor asked. "How does that make you feel?"

Seven looked up to Deanna, her eyes brimming with unshed tears, she blinked them away and said in a small voice. "I have told myself repeatedly that it is irrelevant but my mind keeps searching for answers to take our relationship to its previous closeness. As the Captain, she told me she had to maintain some distance between her and her crew. It never entered the realm of possibility that I could be included in the people she considered her crew. The senior staff of Voyager had somehow been an exception, Tuvok, Chakotay and I being the prime examples. I find that I can not function efficiently since my return to Earth. I find myself constantly thinking of where she is, what she is accomplishing, how pleasing it would be to share all she has experienced since returning to Earth. We used to share those types of experiences before I told her that lie." Seven responded wistfully.

Deanna continued her questioning. "What is her reaction when she sees you now?"

Seven tried to blink the tears away again but was not entirely successful as a single tear fell down her beautiful face. She wiped it quickly and said. "Now she can't stand to be in my presence for more than her role as my commanding officer. We have been at many Starfleet events and she never seeks me out. When I go to her she talks briefly about irrelevant subjects and finds an excuse to see someone else. It makes me feel unwanted and sad. I can not concentrate on anything for a long period of time before I find myself thinking of her and her emotional well being. I thought she would fulfill her promise to take me to see her hometown of Bloomington, Indiana but when I asked her she said. 'The timing isn't right. I will contact you if the situation changes.' I do not know what to do. The personal messages I send her go unanswered for weeks at a time and when she responds to them it is only very brief and dismissive. Counselor, what do you advise me to do?"

Knowing she was on very thin ice since she was counseling the Captain she said. "Why don't you leave me the PADD including the all the data and analysis, you have accumulated. I will look them attentively and contact you tomorrow at 17h00."

Getting up from her sitting position Seven started for the door, just before she was to leave she turned around and said. "I am grateful for your help in this personal matter Counselor Troi. Thank you."

As the door to her office swooshed closed, she let out the breath she had been holding in and whispered. "How do I get myself in to these things? How can I help them without breaking the confidence of her patients?"

16h50

Since she had been asked by the commanding officer for diner and talk, she had gone over in her head what would be appropriate. After changing for times, Deedrah now stood waiting for her date for the evening dressed in a sleeveless black sun dress that enhanced her beautiful womanly curves. She thought the dress was casual but elegant, revealing but tasteful. She was certain her attire would have the desired effect on the Captain.

She was nervous, her heart was beating fast, she was sweating, her hands were shaking slightly and her stomach was doing summersaults. As the minutes slowly passed by, she prayed silently. 'Please God, let me be me for tonight and not a witless sex craved cavewoman.'

She heard her footsteps before she saw her. The Captain was… 'God enough to eat.' She was wearing cream colored pants that hugged her hips and a deep blue silk shirt unbuttoned to accent her cleavage. The sleeves of her shirt were rolled her to the middle of her forearms. Sandals and diamond bracelet and studs earrings completed her outfit. She wore only a little mascara and some lip-stick. She did not need to ware make-up her skinned was tanned and flawless. When you looked closer you could see little adorable freckles.

Before she could come out of her trance, the older woman was standing in front of her smiling up a her with a twinkle in her eyes. Deedrah, let out the breath she'd been holding and stated. "Captain, you are…" Taking once again the time to look at her from her to toe and back up again. "…unquestionably breathtaking."

Janeway smiled even brighter and stated. "Thank you. You certainly are one of the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. Shall we go?"

Deedrah nodded in agreement and continued to stare.

After a few moments, Janeway started to laugh. "I think if you continue to look at me like that my clothes are going to burst in to flames."

Being caught so clearly admiring Janeway's form Deedrah blushed furiously and said apologetically. "I am sorry. I couldn't help my hormonal self."

"Don't worry about it, we are off duty. Starfleet etiquette does not apply here." The captain said with a knowing smile and a little shrug of her shoulders.

Breathing easier, the younger woman responded. "Yes Captain."

As they walked towards their destination, they talked about how great a city San Francisco was and what places they liked to go to. It wasn't long before they were seated inside a beautifully decorated cozy French bistro.

Leaning closer to Janeway, Deedrah began. "When the clock turns 23h00, they clear a few tables and the dance floor takes becomes prevalent. There is in the back and old fashioned juke-box contains only slow dancing songs from every great artist known since the 1920. Warm and soft candlelight is the only mean of illumination, they open all of the doors that lead to the deck and the cool breeze from the Bay washes in. It becomes very romantic. According to the owner, many marriage proposals have been uttered between these walls."

Looking directly in to Janeway's blue eyes, the younger woman continued. "I have been the recipient of two of those myself. I must say turning down both of them was not something I enjoyed. I cared a great deal for them but I could not let them believe my heart was not already taken by someone else."

Kathryn did not want to get in to that kind of discussion with the exquisitely beautiful ensign so she let the comment slide and inquired. "Tell me about why you chose to further your studies in psychology and astrophysics."

Over the next two hours as they ate a light meal and drank delightful coffee, Kathryn questioned the young woman regarding things that weren't answered by the Starfleet file she had reviewed before coming. Deedrah answered them honestly. As promised, Janeway's responses to the ensign's questions had been direct and to the point but she evaded the questions regarding her romantic life by redirecting the conversation elsewhere. This course of action did not go unnoticed by the taller woman.

They had moved with their coffee to a table on the deck overlooking both the Bay and the harbor. Taking the silence between to glance at the younger woman, she thought to herself. "There is no misinterpretation possible to the body language and the tone of voice of the young woman uses, Ensign DiScala wants more."

As soon as the thought was uttered, her little voice chimed in. "Kate, look at her for Pete's sake. You can't say you're not interested. She's definitely your type. She's brilliant, opinionated, determined, drop-dead gorgeous and most of all, your rank does not seem to hinder her desire to get to know you on a deep personal level."

The Captain closed her eyes and retorted in her thoughts. "I do not want to take advantage of my position. She is deeply infatuated with me and it seems to me she has been for quite some time. I do not want to hurt her. If it wasn't for you know who I would gladly let this lead to wherever…"

Her little voice interrupted. "Yeah, yeah… Spare me please. I've heard enough of duty to last me a lifetime. I want to live life now, to experience what this young exquisite beauty wants to offer."

Deedrah looked over to the Captain and saw that fire worry lines had appeared around her eyes and mouth. "Captain?" she said. The commanding officer eyes opened revealing orbs that were now more grey than blue. "Is there something troubling you? Have I done something wrong?"

Shocked by the fact the younger woman would think something of the sort, Janeway quickly replied. "No of course you haven't." Looking directly in the younger woman's eyes to make sure her answer was understood, the Captain added. "It is just that sometimes, my mind wanders to impossible situations. I guess it's a condition that all starship captains suffer from. As a whole, being out of control is not something captains appreciate."

Both of them returned to their observation of the harbor and the sailboats coming in. They drank their coffee in silence, enjoying the remains of day's sun rays.

Deedrah mind was racing. 'Dee it is now or never. You can feel she wants to. Her body has crept over a few times, you saw her heartbeat accelerate. All her training and experience can't hide her body's desires.' The Counselor's face appeared and she quickly pushed those thoughts aside and replaced them by more appropriate ones. 'Professional then, we'll keep it professional for as long as it takes for her to come around.' Taking a moment to gather her courage, Deedrah looked at her hand as she took two deep breaths and finally declared. "Captain?" She waited for the older woman's attention to focus on her and continued. "I would like to write your biography. Please forgive my bluntness but you are being selfish…" Seeing Janeway frown and open her mouth, she quickly held up her hand and added. "People from all walks of life could learn a great deal from the experiences you lived. The Federation needs stories like your own to help people believe and adhere completely to the principles put forth by the Federation. The recent wars have depleted the strength of the Federation. People need someone they can relate with, someone that has been through great hardship and still kept on holding and living with dignity and honoring Federation's principles." She paused to take her breath. "It would honor me greatly if you would allow me to write your experiences with your consent. I know many celebrated journalists and professional biographers have asked. I also know that you've denied their requests but I have great passion for what you believe in. You were the one who ultimately lead me to Starfleet. Anyway, over the last few years, I wrote some of it. I could let you read what I have done so far. You could make your decision then and I would respect it."

Janeway had listened attentively to the younger woman's explanation, slowly got up from her chair and said. "It is getting late…" Janeway noticed how Deedrah's shoulders slumped a little and her eyes pained lowered to her hands when hearing this. A small crooked knowing smile appeared on the captain's mouth before she continued. "Would you like to come over to my house, you could see how Voyager's Captain lives? It could give you another perspective for the biography you'll write about me."

The young ensign could not believe what she just heard. "Captain?" and babbled "Biography… you… me?"

The Captain smile and nodded.

Without thinking, Deedrah leapt to her feet and quickly picked up Janeway of the ground in her arms and hugged her fiercely close to her body for a few moments before realizing what she had just done. Letting her go, she promptly put the older woman back on the ground and said. "I am sorry Captain. I should not have done that but you made me so happy my instincts took over. I apologize."

Seeing the fear etched in Ensign DiScala's eyes Janeway said. "It's fine. Don't worry. I guess happiness does have a profound effect. Come on. Let's walk to the transporter station. There is about an hour left before the sun sets so you'll be able to have a look around the grounds."

22h03

Ensign DiScala had covered part of the large property the Captain's house was build on. She had detailed the house from top to bottom. Two rooms seemed to be of particular interest to her, the Captain's library which also served as an office and the master bedroom. The young woman those rooms were the closest she could come to know the woman behind the Captain. She had asked numerous questions about the leather bound books she found in the library and countless others regarding the choices that had led Janeway to build this house on this property. Janeway had answered as best she could but she kept to herself her more private reasons.

"Would you like a caramel brownie?" Janeway asked out of the blue. "My mother made me some and I just can help eating a piece every night."

Smiling brightly, Deedrah responded. "Sure, I would be honored to savor some of those famous brownies."

Frowning slightly, Kathryn questioned. "What do you mean 'famous'?"

Seeing the worried look, the ensign answered quickly. "Captain, ever since you mentioned in one of the first interviews you gave that what you had missed most in the Delta Quadrant was your mother's caramel brownies recipe. There have been more than a few recipes claiming to be 'it'. I have personally tried a few of them myself. They were all good but I am glad to taste the 'real thing' myself."

Shaking her head from side to side, Janeway commented. "It is sometimes incomprehensible to me what people will find relevant." As she walked towards the kitchen, Kathryn asked. "What would you like to drink?"

"Coffee, black, please." Deedrah followed the Captain and added. "I must confess that I am also an addict to the stuff."

Smiling at the comment, Janeway asked. "Do you have specific requirement for your coffee? My sister Phoebe gave me a list of over 350 recipes. I have not tried all of them myself but I trust her very discerning coffee taste buds. It is one of the few things we agree on, and she loves coffee even more than I. She told me she got the recipes from the best coffee shops she visited during her frequent trips."

"I'll have what you're having." Replied Deedrah. Thinking of the recipes, the younger woman stated. "Your sister must be very persuasive because every place I found a great cup of would never let me take some with me."

Thinking of how her sister could get under her skin with ease, Janeway smiled and replied. "Persuasion is not how I would describe how she is able to get things from some people, including me, but she does."

Seeing the way the older woman had smiled when her sister's name was mentioned, Deedrah decided to try her luck by questioning Janeway further. "You must be proud of her accomplishments?"

"Yes." Janeway simply answered. She felt the conversation veering uncomfortably towards very private matters.

Kathryn handed Deedrah her cup and said, as she presented her a brownie that had been put into an individual stasis package. "They are addictive to."

Laughing, the younger woman did not need to be told twice. She opened the stasis package and took a small bite. Her eyes closed uncontrollably and her head fell back some.

Janeway was watching intently the younger woman. Interested in observing the effect her mother's powerful drug could have on unsuspecting individuals she thought to herself. "She looks to be in 'ecstasy land'". Her little voice chimed in. 'Yep, she sure does... Doesn't this beautiful site give you ideas? It certainly is giving me some.'

Before Janeway could answer her basic self, she heard Deedrah moan slightly and say in a deeper sensual voice. "God… these things should be illegal. No wonder you missed them so." Kathryn smile knowingly and began eating. They both ate in silence but once in a while a moaning sound was heard and they would both laugh at their passionate enjoyment of Gretchen Janeway's treats.

Once they finished their delicacy, they walked, coffee in hand, to the main deck outside the living room. Teasing, Deedrah said. "Do you think your mother could adopt me in someway so I could have access to these little treasures?" Looking over to Kathryn who had started to laugh she added. "If the Ferengi knew about these your mother could offer you a Sovereign Class Starship with a gold-pressed latinum interior and still have enough to purchase a half the Federation."

Janeway laugh was so contagious that Deedrah couldn't resist joining in. A few moments later, once they were able to stop laughing and giggling, Ensign DiScala noticed the happy tears stained her cheeks and glorious gleaming slate blue eyes. She couldn't help but stare at this astonishingly beautiful woman. She never had the chance to witness this side of the woman behind the Captain. She looked at Janeway with tears in her eyes and said. "Thank you Captain for giving me the privilege to see this side of you, I appreciate this opportunity beyond what words could express."

"Tell you what… How about if I let you hear my mother's favorite song? It is an old cowboy waltz written by Bob House & Wayland Holyfield and sung by Anne Murray in the late 20th century."

Sensing the Captain relaxing, Deedrah asked. "I will be glad to but… how about if we dance to it."

Janeway looked inquisitively at the Ensign for any sign of subterfuge, seeing none she nodded and replied. "You don't have two left feet, do you?"

Deedrah laughed and responded. "Nope. I love to dance. It makes me feel free."

"Well… in that case let's give it a shot. You're taller, you take the lead." Janeway replied also smiling.

As the music began, Deedrah immediately recognized the song she had sung four years ago to her parents for their 25th wedding anniversary. They had danced to it as they had always done since they were married. She smiled and started to sing softly in Janeway's ear as they danced.

I'll always remember the song they were playing
The first time we danced and I knew
As we swayed to the music and held to each other
I fell in love with you

Could I have this dance for the rest of my life
Would you be my partner every night
When we're together it feels so right
Could I have this dance for the rest of my life

I'll always remember that magic moment
When I held you close to me
As we moved together I knew forever
You're all I'll ever need

Could I have this dance for the rest of my life
Would you be my partner every night
When we're together it feels so right
Could I have this dance for the rest of my life

Could I have this dance for the rest of my life
Would you be my partner every night
When we're together it feels so right
Could I have this dance for the rest of my life

Janeway knew she was in trouble as soon as the song began. Her body had a mind of its own, it had molded itself to Deedrah's as the song progressed. Kathryn was mesmerized by the warm sensual voice singing softly in her ear. Her heart started to beat faster. Her breathing became shallow. She felt the hand the younger woman had originally put at her shoulder level drop to the small of her back and hold their hips firmly together until she could feel the younger woman sway in sink with her.

The song had ended and intoxicated by Kathryn's perfume and touch, Deedrah could not let go of the smaller woman. She couldn't help herself nor did she want to so she gently brushed her lips below Janeway's ear and inched her way so very slowly along the strong jaw up to the warm slightly parted yielding lips. Caressing instinctively the older woman's soft cheek, she couldn't get enough of the taste and texture of Janeway's lips. Kathryn found that she was unable to resist the rising desire that coursed through her body and a low moan escaped her as she responded more and more to the younger woman's skilled kisses. The hand that had been caressing Janeway's soft cheek found its way to the back of the older woman neck and gently, expert fingers massaged Kathryn's scalp. Deedrah loved the silky feel of the auburn hair and she moaned as Janeway parted her lips even more to let her tongue slip deeper into her mouth. As their kiss deepened even more tongues danced and dueled for long blissful moments, Deedrah's hands roamed over Kathryn's back and hips until they finally cupped Kathryn's firm behind and began softly kneading it and pulled her closer to her overheating center. Janeway's hands were tangled in the dark silky main of the younger woman, she could feel the heat emanating from her and that resulted in strengthening her lustful desires. Suddenly ice blue eyes appeared and she broke the kiss. Her little voice insisted that Kathryn continued on but the Captain knew better than to listen to it.

"I'm sorry Deedrah but I can't do this."

Amazed by the sudden change, the ensign blinked as she tried to get her breathing and heart under control and said panting. "What's wrong? Don't you want this as much as I want do?"

When Janeway realized that the younger woman was still holding firmly her hips to her own, she gently pushed the object of her lustful craving back and said. "I don't want to hurt you and that is exactly what is going to happen if we continue."

Her face still flushed from arousal, Deedrah stated. "I don't understand what you mean… I have dreamt of this for so long. I want this, I want you. You are the physical, emotional and intellectual embodiment of what I have been waiting for." As she ended part of a speech she had practiced so often, she remembered the Counselor's words. She closed her eyes and declared in a whisper. "Your heart belongs to someone else and that person is not aware of that fact."

Janeway acknowledged and said again with regret. "I'm sorry Deedrah. You are a brilliant, funny, exciting, wonderful, sexy woman and I would love nothing more than to take you to my bed and love you all night but it would not be fair to you. I am not able nor willing to give what you want from me… complete access to the woman behind the commanding officer. There is only one person for me and I am sorry to say I have lost her already to someone else before I could even have the chance to tell her."

Deedrah looked deep in to those wonderful expressive eyes and could only see pain, longing and love in them, a love that was meant for someone else. Her own feelings for the older woman only grew stronger and she swore to respect the woman's wishes until those could be allowed to change. The Captain needed a friend and if friendship was all she could get from her than so be it. The young woman would never make the mistake of turning away from Kathryn Janeway even if she was frustrated with the end results of tonight's physical interlude.

Kathryn walked towards the end of the deck and looked at the emptiness of the ocean view and whispered. "The Delta Quadrant has given me the one I did not even know I was searching for but it also took it from me. My duty as Captain pushed her away from me in to someone else's loving arms."

Having heard every word, Deedrah stood next to Janeway and watched as silent tears fell down the older woman's cheeks freely. She wanted so much to take her in her arms and make the hurt go away but she knew the Captain needed the physical space.

Minutes passed in silence before Deedrah spoke. "Captain, your secret is safe with me. I will never break the confidence you have shown me. Believe me when I say that if I could take your hurt away I would but that is not how it is going to be." Waiting for a sign from the Captain she added in a wistful filled voice. "If you still want me to write your biography, I would be honored." Seeing that Janeway heard what she said, she continued. "Friendship is something that I am more than willing to accept from you. Tonight was wonderful, I felt a kinship that I'm sure can only grow with time if you'll let it." Walking slowly backwards, Deedrah finished before turning. "Thank you Captain. Goodnight."

Before the door closed, Kathryn cleared her throat and said. "Ensign DiScala. I do not have the habit of telling people something and doing another. I am glad that what just transpired has not discouraged you from writing because building a friendship with you is an opportunity that I would be foolish not to accept." The Captain said with conviction. "Thank you for your understanding… I am not sure I could be if our role were reversed." Smiling a little she said. "There is one condition though." Deedrah eyes questioned her silently. "You have to call me Kathryn when we are off duty."

The smile that graced the young woman's beautiful face burnt brighter than a thousand suns as she said. "I also have one condition Kathryn… in reality I have two. The first being my name, Deedrah is fine but I would appreciate it if you used Dee instead." Janeway nodded once in agreement. Deedrah smiled brightly again and continued. "The second is completely out of self preservation. If you could avoid being in close contact physical contact with me, it would make my life easier… I mean… you saw the effect you have on me."

"I will Dee. Thank you." Janeway answerer sincerely relieved and smiled at Deedrah's teasing nature.

Reaching the front door of the house, Deedrah said. "Kathryn…" She loved saying her name. "When I get home tonight, I will send over a secure channel a copy of what I have done so far on your biography."

Seeing Deedrah leave, Janeway had an idea and said. "Dee… Wait. Let me use my rank for once, it's getting late and I am sure Counselor Troi has a lot of work ready for you to tackle tomorrow."

Ten seconds later, Ensign DiScala was in her quarters at her computer terminal sending the encoded documents to Kathryn. She silently thanked the Captain for using her privilege to have Starfleet transport Deedrah directly from the Captain's home to the younger woman's quarters.

23h27

She was drawing a much needed bath, when she was alerted of an incoming secured message. Walking over the computer console in her office, she opened it to see it was the work Deedrah had promised to send. She downloaded the document in to a PADD and walked back to her bath that was now filled. She stepped in to the warm, relaxing bubble filled water and sighed heavily.

Her little voice stated. 'Kate, I know you've had a long day so I am only going to say this. You need to talk about Seven to someone and you need to talk to Seven. You can't go around acting as if you don't care. It has to come to a resolution quickly because I am getting fed up with you and the Captain. I… want… a… life… now!'

"You're absolutely right." Janeway stated honestly.

Sarcastic, the voice answered. 'Thank you.'

"Just let me close my eyes for about 30 minutes. Then I'll start working on a way to get what we both want." She closed her eyes and let the feeling of warmth envelop her.

June 16th 2378

'Oh God Seven… Oh God… Oh, oh Seven… yes… Seven… yeeesss.'

Kathryn awoke to her body convulsing in piercing release, clutching at the soft Egyptian cotton sheets as delightful waves coursed through her. As her body finally collapsed spent from the intense physical response, she laid stunned by the power of her obvious desires for the ex-Borg Nordic beauty. When her heartbeat and breathing came back to their normal level, Kathryn went into the ensuite, splashed some water on her face and looked in the mirror. She started to laugh and said. "If this is the effect she will have on me, waiting for us to get to Earth before I revealed anything was definitely the correct choice."

Her little voice added. 'God, yeah Kate… a red alert could not have taken you from away from that woman hands and body. That felt absolutely incredible. Kate… you and I need to get our hands on the real thing.'

Kathryn rolled her eyes and responded a little miffed. "Sometimes I really wonder if you're a part of me because your language is somewhat… less than lady like."

"You must have hurt you head or something Kate because you… have never been a lady when in comes to sex. You may be a skilled diplomat, a great Captain but you are no lady when it comes to your most private thoughts about that beautiful, brilliant sexy blond bombshell ex-Borg. So don't you play dumb with me 'cause I know better sweet lips."

"I don't know why I even bother with you… you're hopelessly incorrigible."

"Why thank you Ma'am." The little voice responded in her best impression of a southern accent. Janeway sighed and warned. "I have important things to do today, so don't go off on some tangent ok!?! I don't need you complicating things more than they already are."

"Fine I won't say a peep, but don't put the blame on me for this mess. That… is all your doing. Now get off your high horse and go fix it."

Getting testy, Janeway said as she walked towards the shower. "All right, all right! Damn… you're worst than Phoebe."

"Oh, thank you Kate. That the nicest thing you have ever said to me." The little voice said in a sweet sarcastic tone.

Deciding that she would not win this little encounter, she showered quickly, got dressed and went out for a long run along the coast.

07h38

Her run had helped clear her thoughts of clutter. She had just received a response to the message to Counselor Troi she had sent a little over 30 minutes ago. The meeting was for 09h30. It left her enough time to finish some reports and have breakfast before going down to Headquarters.

"Perfect." She took her coffee and breakfast from the replicator and walked with purpose to her office.

09h26

"Captain." Deedrah greeted warmly.

"Good morning Ensign DiScala." Janeway said with a smile.

"Counselor Troi is ready to see you whenever you are, Captain."

She thanked the younger woman before walking in.

Immediately, Deanna noticed the change in Kathryn's demeanor. Her shoulders although held firmly back were relaxed; the walk was brisk and resolute; the smile was brighter than she had seen it in months; her eyes blue grey eyes sparkled from enthusiasm. 'Well…' She thought to herself. 'Don't you look like the cat who's about to eat the canary.'

"Kathryn…" Deanna acknowledged with a soft knowing smile and inquired. "How about something illegal?"

"Deanna, I think you're trying to get me in to trouble but how could I refuse such a wonderful offer." Janeway answered with a playful smirk.

Knowing full well the Captain's addiction, the Counselor had prepared the special blend coffee just minutes before. As she handed her her cup, Deanna stated. "Tell me… what happened since you left here yesterday?"

Janeway thought of yesterday's events and their effect on the decision she made late last night, took a sip of the spectacular coffee, smiled and said after a few moments. "Would you agree with Benjamin Franklin and say that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results."

"It isn't the clinical definition of it but it is a good example of it." Deanna replied evenly and waited for Kathryn to continue.

"Good… I wish to enter a plea of insanity when I think back to some of my actions in the past few months." Looking over to the Counselor who looked a little confused by her answer she quickly added. "So, what did happen… nothing much, I just decided that it was about time to face the music and get on with my life."

When Deanna waited for her to explain, Kathryn continued. "Once, when we were on Arturis's ship with the definite possibility of being both assimilated by the Borg looming, I told Seven these exact words: 'In case I never get a chance to say this, I realize I've been hard on you at times, but it was never out of anger or regret that I brought you on board. I'm your Captain. That means I can't always be your friend.' When her cortical node was failing, we discussed her dire situation in the Astrometrics lab I told her that I would bring her to my hometown when we got to Earth. Understandably exasperated from my lack of acceptance of her almost certain demise, Seven said that I couldn't accept the possibility of her death and of course, she was right. The reason she evoked for my lack of acceptance was wrong however, Seven thought it was because she had failed me in her conquest to regain her individuality. That could not have been further from the truth but I didn't have the courage to tell her that I was not accepting it because I didn't want to lose a friend but because I could not see the love of my life die without her knowing about it."

Deanna looked at Janeway and blinked a few times astonished by what she had just heard and thought. 'Finally… thank you Kathryn. I was beginning to think that I would never hear you say those words.'

The Captain held her hand up to stop Deanna from speaking and stated. "Deanna, I know you knew of my feelings for her and I appreciate you giving the time I needed to not only acknowledge them but decide what to do about them. Last night's meeting with Ensign DiScala has opened my eyes to my own foolishness. Seven and Chakotay are two of the people I hold the closest to my heart and since they've become involved romantically I have distanced myself from them." Before continuing, brought the cup to her nose, closed her eyes, smelled the wonderful aroma and took another sip of her favorite drug.

"At first, I felt betrayed by Chakotay because he had sensed that there was something unspoken between Seven and me. But I can't hold him responsible for the state of my relationship with Seven, he never asked directly and I never expressed my feelings for Seven to Chakotay. Anyway, I would and could not allow anything more than friendship to develop between Seven and me. Then when Seven showed interest in Chakotay he didn't stand a chance. As you well know, the Borg do have a saying "Resistance is futile." I guess Chakotay couldn't resist Seven's attention... I know that if the positions were reversed that I would have fallen for her and fallen hard." As the last words were uttered, thoughts of Seven invaded her mind. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes. After a few seconds, she drank from her cup and resumed her monologue. "I don't think my feelings for Seven will change anytime soon and I'm not sure if my heart is going to take it but I have been miserable without her in my life and I'd be astoundingly stupid to keep pushing her away. She's relentless… even with all I have done she keeps coming back for more."

Deanna interrupted Kathryn and asked. "What do you think you have you done exactly?"

Janeway sighed heavily and responded sadly. "I can't tell you how hard it has been for me to se them together. At every damn Starfleet event where Voyager's senior officers were required to be, there they were dancing, laughing, flirting, making conversation… I was jealous, torn, sad, envious, furious all rolled in to one. So, when they tried to reach me, I gave them the cold professional shoulder… the 'duty-bound Starfleet Captain' one. I'm sure you remember."

Recalling how aggravating Janeway could become, Deanna remarked. "Most definitely and I can't say that I miss it."

Janeway smile sadly and explained further. "Even when she sent me personal memos I answered them belatedly on purpose and I kept my responses very short and to the point. Chakotay did not care for the new and improved me. In fact we had an argument about it. He came to my office and I told him that I did not have to explain myself to him and that the family bond we shared in the Delta Quadrant needed to be severed. He said and I quote. 'Kathryn, I understand you need time to adjust to the swarm of emotions but Seven does not have the luxury of a wealth of close friends and you shutting her out for personal reasons, how ever sound you feel they are, just isn't fair to her. She does not deserve this kind of treatment from you. You're everything to her for God sakes… Although I am certain there is something important you're not telling me that is making you act this way, I can be patient and when you're ready I will still be here.' I thanked him for understanding and told him to keep taking care of Seven."

"Do you think he knows of the true nature of your feelings towards Seven?" Deanna asked.

Janeway shook her head negatively before she answered. "At times Chakotay can read me like a book but when it comes to Seven, I can't say for sure. He has always said that I shared something special with Seven, that she saw a side of me no one else did but he never defined it more specific terms. I think he saw me has her mentor and close personal friend." Thinking of her choice in sexual partners since her return to Earth she added. "There is also the fact that before Seven I never looked at another woman in a romantic setting… but she opened my mind to new possibilities… to needs I didn't know existed within me. You see, I had always appreciated beauty in either gender but as Seven's constantly questioned my humanity I began to challenge the notions I had accepted as certainty. Although beauty will always be of some importance to me, gender is no longer a factor for me." Janeway thought of Chakotay keen sense of observation and concluded. "Now, he may suspect some things but he knows I would never act inappropriately with someone he is involved with."

"Why do you think he could have come to that conclusion?" Deanna wondered.

"As I am sure you have witnessed or heard trough the grapevine, I have not been exactly celibate since our return. Although I have tried to be discrete since the press seems to follow my movements with interest, I have not always accomplished my goal when the press was not prying. You see, at one of the first Starfleet shindig we went after returning from the Delta Quadrant, Chakotay's saw me passionately kissing an absolutely stunningly sensual blue eyed blond Swedish engineer I had met the week before at Utopia Planitia Shipyards. I know this because he made so much noise when he ran in to one of the tables that were set out of the way on the balcony that everything that had been on it ended up on the floor." Chuckling at the images of the event in question, she added. "You would have loved to see the surprised look on his face. Chakotay's tattoo almost disappeared from his forehead and his eyes were as big as saucer. I think he had always though of me as a heterosexual and he never expected this from me. So it is plausible that our little display put the idea in his mind but I am only speculating because he never mentioned anything to me about it."

Looking at Deanna, she lifted her cup and asked. "Do you think I could have another? I know I have stretched my limit in the last ten hours but I definitely need the caffeine."

With a bright smile Deanna responded. "Certainly, it is always a treat for me to witness such devotion from you. I think I enjoy watching you savor this coffee blend as much as I enjoy eating chocolate. Both are very sensual experiences." As she was making another cup from scratch she inquired. "What have you done in the last ten hours that has made you go over your limit of coffee intake?"

Kathryn waited for Deanna to come back and sit before she proffered cryptically. "Let's just say that I went to sleep around two ten and a reoccurring dream awoke me a little after five."

Deanna observed Kathryn taste the hot beverage and smile, the Counselor could help but grin at the sight before she probed further. "Tell me about this recurring dream."

Blushing a little at the images brought by the memory, the Captain simply said in a huskier voice. "The dream is erotic in nature."

Sensing that the Counselor wanted more details, Kathryn grew reluctant to continue her explanation. Then out of blue the solution surfaced when she thought of the new procedure she had been privy to and said with more enthusiasm. "I can ask Dr. Katherine Pulaski to come over and attach a device that isolates memory engrams in the brain. You can link the device to a console and view everything. The person does not relive the experiences, she only act as a conduit. It only takes about a minute to set up."

Deanna frowned slightly and said. "I heard of that and I've wanted to use it with some of my patients but I was told it wasn't ready."

Janeway cracked a half-smile and announced. "Covert Operations have been working with it for months. Starfleet wants to wait for it to be used on a larger scale until there is a way found to eradicate the possibility of tampering." Observing the Counselor closely she finally asked. "Shall I get in touch with her?"

Nodding positively, Deanna spoke. "I would gladly accept the help if she is willing. It will make my analysis much easier and much quicker." Seeing Janeway frown a little she explained further. "People when they recollect dreams rearrange them unconsciously to fit of the image they think they should project to the world. It's a self-image protection mechanism."

Janeway nodded in comprehension. activated her communicator and spoke up. "Janeway to Dr. Pulaski."

A second later, the doctor responded. "Pulaski here. Go ahead, Captain."

"I need to have a private moment with you doctor."

"I'm alone Kathryn." The doctor declared.

"Kate, I need a favor." Kathryn stated.

Pulaski openly said. "Try me."

"Could you come directly to Counselor Troi office with the new memory engram device we talked about the other day?" Janeway inquired in a firm but warm voice.

Brief and to the point, the doctor spoke. "Sure, give me ten minutes to finish up here. Pulaski out."

Janeway burst out laughing at the sight of Deanna flabbergasted features.

Chuckling at Janeway's response, Deanna said. "I worked with Dr. Pulaski when she was on the Enterprise-D but she never let anybody call her Kate."

Still giggling, Kathryn thought of when the doctor now head of Starfleet medical had to her that there was only a handful of people that she would allow her to call her 'Kate' and smiled before saying. "She's been a friend of mine for a long time. It's a privilege that I cherish immensely." Knowing the Counselor wanted to know the details regarding the friendship, Kathryn in a voice that meant this was the only answer she was going to give stated. "Let's just say that we have seen ourselves through some difficult times and leave it at that."

Janeway had just finished her coffee when Dr. Pulaski beamed into the Counselor's office. As soon as she had rematerialized, she stated. "I still hate to damn things." Turning to Deanna she smiled warmly and said. "Deanna, always a pleasure."

Deanna hugged the doctor and spoke. "Katherine, thank you for agreeing to do this."

Katherine hugged the Counselor and informed Deanna. "You're very welcome but don't get any ideas… this is a one time deal."

Dr. Pulaski grinned to Janeway and gestured for her to come over. "I just need to attach this to your forehead before it can be calibrated and linked to the computer." The doctor said.

As she finished, the doctor declared. "Every thing is set up." She waited for Deanna walk over and look at the console before she continued. "You just need to use these controls to focus on the desired area. Once you've accomplished that push this one to view the memory. If you need to start over for whatever reasons push that one and the device will automatically recalibrate itself. One last thing Deanna, once you're finished with this. Contact me and I'll come retrieve it."

When the Counselor nodded in understanding, Pulaski turned to the Captain and stated. "Kathryn, I'll expect a great bottle of you know what in my office by the end of the day. I would appreciate it even more if it was personally delivered."

Grinning like a Cheshire cat, the Captain responded. "I'll see to it."

Walking towards the door, the doctor said. "Deanna, Kathryn. I will let you get back to your work."

"Thank you Kate." Kathryn said.

"Thank you Katherine." The Counselor replied.

As the two women thanked her almost in chorus, Dr. Pulaski smiled, nodded to them and left.

Janeway's fond expression towards the head of Starfleet Medical was sill apparent when Deanna faced Kathryn. She only declared. "Once I have access to the specific memory engrams, it will help if you keep your mind focused on a single object like your coffee cup and take deep slow breaths. Understand?"

"Yes. Coffee cup, deep slow breaths." Janeway answered.

"I am ready when you are." Deanna said.

The Captain was a little nervous at letting the Counselor in to her psyche but she thought. 'This is for the best.' She walked over to the couch, laid down comfortably and simply stated. "I am."

Sensing Kathryn unease, Deanna spoke gently. "You said the dream woke you up a little after five. Tell me about how it begins so I can focus the device properly."

Janeway closed her eyes and took a deep breath and said. "The doors to holodeck 2 aboard Voyager have just closed. There is a celebration. The whole crew is present and everyone is wearing civilian clothing. Music is playing and people are dancing and having a good time. I am searching for someone and suddenly I see her, a tall blond woman. I walk over to her, I can't see her face yet but I know her and I am very happy that she is here."

Deanna interrupted her and said. "I have access to your memory now." After a few moments, she sensed that Janeway was not following the previous instructions to the letter so she repeated. "Focus Kathryn… Coffee cup, deep slow breaths." She waited for the Captain to achieve the level of concentration needed and returned to her observations.

"Thank you for coming Seven." Janeway said smiling brightly.

Nodding, Seven responded. "Captain."

"Please call me Kathryn. We're not on duty and I don't want to be a commanding officer tonight."

Seven smiled and said. "Thank you for the privilege Kathryn."

Feeling freed by Janeway's deeply personal authorization, Seven asked. "Would you like to dance Kathryn?"

The older woman blinked a few times and responded. "Yes but let's wait for something more subdued."

Looking at the auburn woman's clothing, Seven thought for a second and stated. "Kathryn… when the Doctor helped me choose the attire for this evening, he stated that I needed to 'dazzle that special someone'. I am not quite certain of his meaning since I could never blind or blind partially and temporarily someone with the aid of this garment but do I 'dazzle you' Kathryn?"

The older woman had definitely noticed the ex-Borg attire. As a matter of fact, her heart at started to beat faster, and a familiar tingling appeared at the sight of the gorgeous woman. She had made an effort to not stare at the beauty but now that she was asked to she certainly took her time and allowed herself a long slow sensual observation.

Seven was wearing a classy long sleeve round neck sky blue silk dress with a flowing three quarter skirt that opened up to the thigh on the left side. Low open-toe heels with delicate leather straps and diamond earrings studs completed the figure revealing clothing. Her golden hair was softly pulled back in a loose intricate pony tail.

Licking her lips unconsciously at the site revealed before her the Captain stated. "I don't know about dazzled but you definitely make me feel light-headed... You are absolutely stunning Seven."

Observing Kathryn's reaction attentively Seven asked evenly after consideration. "Are pupil dilation, increases in skin temperature, breathing an heart rate symptoms of light-headedness?"

Lowering her eyes from Seven's penetrating ones Janeway answered cryptically. "I guess so."

After a few moments, Seven said in a deeper voice than usual. "I find that the black formfitting revealing neckline dress you are wearing Kathryn is having the same effect on me. Do you also have the urge to touch me as I do you?"

Kathryn was stunned beyond words. The only thing she could do was slowly nod her head up and down and put her hand on Seven's left shoulder and let her hand trickle slowly down Seven's arm. Seven's closed her eyes involuntarily has she shuddered beneath the warm sensual touch of Kathryn's delicate hand.

At that moment someone came to offer them something to drink. They both took some sparkling wine and downed half their drink in one big gulp to relieve their dry throats and to try to regain some semblance of control.

Seven looked at Kathryn's state and cocked her head to the side, in the same manner she did when she was pondering or analyzing something. Then she asked. "Does the music fulfill your previous requirements, Kathryn?"

The older woman, still trying to get her passionate physical reactions under control, simply stated. "Yes."

Taking Janeway's answer as approval for her previous request, Seven put her right hand on the small of Kathryn's bar back and gently lead her to the dance floor. Seven took Kathryn's right hand in her left one, brought it to her full lips and kissed each finger sensually. Looking directly in to Janeway's eye she kissed the palm of Kathryn's hand and took the auburn woman's thumb in her mouth, sucking and flicking her tongue against it before entwining their hands once again and dropping them on her upper chest.

Sensing Seven's warm pliant metal meshed hand had surprised Kathryn since she had imagined it being cold but it was the feel of those luscious wonderfully soft yielding lips that made her shudder with need. When Seven's mouth had closed around her thumb, she had been unable to resist the flow of emotions that coursed through her and Janeway moaned lightly.

Kathryn's left hand drifted up to Seven's neck, with its help the older woman closed the distance that was left between their bodies and rested her cheek on the Seven's left shoulder. Janeway could feel Seven's lips brushing her hair gently as they swayed wordlessly to the music with their eyes closed for long minutes. They were both reveling in the pleasure of feeling the other one's body in close intimate contact.

After what seemed like an eternity Kathryn opened her eyes... smiled and brought her mouth closer to Seven's ear and broke the silence. "I think you just swept me of my feet… figuratively speaking of course." Kathryn closed her eyes, leaned even closer, let Seven's presence fill her senses and added hoarsely. "You have no idea the effect you have of me." As she finished speaking, Kathryn couldn't help herself… she softly brushed her lips on Seven's long sensuous neck. The tall blond woman closed her eyes in reaction to the warm lips that she so desperately wanted to feel and moaned faintly. She bent her neck back to allow Kathryn greater access. Not letting this opportunity pass her by, the older woman mouth graced Seven's neck with a series of fluttering kissing that made Seven shudder in pleasure. Slowly Janeway's lips inched closer and closer to Seven's own. Their breathing grew shallow and their chests heaved and the hand that had been laying on the small of Kathryn's back was now kneading and caressing the flushed skin beneath. When their lips met, it was as if they had been thirsty for weeks on end and the other one's lips were the well they longed for and couldn't get enough of. At first, lips brushed lightly but it quickly grew to a bruising intensity as they clung to one another. Both women moaned deeply at the intimate contact when their tongues met for the first time and warmth soon spread to every part of their bodies. Tongues intertwined fervently until it was no longer possible to know when one kiss ended and the other one began. Janeway's nimble fingers were massaging feverously the golden main while Seven's hands were molding firmly Kathryn's body to her own and her hips started to move on their own volition. Kathryn responded by grinding her hips to the younger woman's. When Seven cupped and squeezed the smaller woman's firm behind then pressed their bodies even closer and lifted her from the ground, Kathryn realized how inappropriately heated their embrace had become so she reluctantly broke their kiss. Her eyes dark with desire met similar ones and she said in a deep husky voice. "Seven, people are staring. We need to move to a more private setting or stop this."

Seven's mouth was mere inches from Janeway's ear when she uttered in a voice filled with need and desire, a voice Kathryn had never heard before. "I don't care Kathryn, I need to feel you… I need to feel your body close to mine… I need to feel your yielding skin beneath my fingers and lips… I need to feel your soft firm breast in my hands… I need to feel your hardened peaks in my warm wet mouth… I need to feel your hot silky wetness around my thrusting fingers… I need to feel your musky scent when my face is berried deep within you… I need to feel your fingers digging in my back when you tense and quiver from explosive consecutive releases… I want to learn your body's secret so I can do it again better the next time for as long as there is energy left in my body… I want to see your passion completely released... I want you to reveal yourself to me. I need you Kathryn. Please Kathryn… Please don't make us stop."

If Seven had not still been holding firmly Kathryn to her she would have fell to the ground because her knees had turned to complete mush when she heard the passionate needful plea. "Seven, I want you so much, I have waited for so long for you to return the feelings you create within me. Say that you'll spend the night with me."

Not answering, Seven guided Janeway out of holodeck 2. They walked towards Janeway's quarters as fast as their legs would permit them to without running. They were barely inside when Seven's mouth crushed Janeway's willing one open immediately deepening the kiss to a level never attained before. Seven's tongue was now probing every corner of Kathryn's mouth relentlessly. Nothing the older woman had ever felt could have prepared her for the almost painful need she was sensing now. Janeway wrapped her legs around Seven's waist as she felt herself lifted of the ground and her back flattened by the wall. Kathryn wanted Seven so much that she could not help but grind feverously her hips against Seven. The younger woman could feel Kathryn's wetness permeating her stomach. The smell of Kathryn's arousal was overwhelming her sense so Seven lifted Janeway even higher, this pushed the skirt up almost to Janeway's waist exposing to Seven the overheated centre of the auburn woman above her. Seven did not waste any time as her lips closed on that bundle of nerves. Janeway cried out as Seven's hot tongue flicked over it again and again. Sensing that Janeway needed to be devoured, Seven did not waste anymore time teasing the wet, desirable folds. On the contrary, she lapped at her eagerly but yet so gently, Kathryn could not avoid moaning loudly in abandon.

Seven's needed all of the strength her left hand allowed her when Kathryn started undulating powerfully against Seven's hungry mouth a definite sign of the auburn woman slowly approaching release.

When she sensed her lover's inner muscles starting to contract in pleasure, Seven brought her right hand between Kathryn dripping folds and entered her deeply with two fingers as she continued to gently suck the little responsive nub.

"Yes... yes... Seven, deeper... go deeper... that's it."

The tall blonde followed the instructions enthusiastically, making Janeway cry out from the pleasure that was flowing through her. She was panting heavily now, she had let go of all her inhibitions and it amazed her how this tall blond woman could tear down the walls she had built over the years so easily and how she completely trusted her.

"Yes... Seven... I need... you... to... fill... me." Janeway said between each powerful thrust. Seven intensified her ministrations on Janeway by adding a third finger and pumping furiously in to her while she continued to flick and suck the small bundle. She could feel the muscles of Kathryn contracting and pulling her in more and more. And then Janeway came crashing and screaming at the top of her lungs.

'Oh God… Seven… Oh God… Oh, oh Seven… yes… Seven… yeeesss.'

Deanna could see in her face definite sign of arousal as she looked in to the reflective surface of her desk. Years of training could not inhibit her basic response to witnessing such an event. So she decided to close her eyes and bring her emotional responses down to a professional level. The Counselor took this opportunity to gather her thoughts. When she felt ready, she terminated the link between the Captain and the computer console and said to Kathryn. "Kathryn, I have finished reviewing your memory of the dream. Let's get this device off of you before we continue."

Once seated next to Janeway, Deanna asked. "Has this dream changed over time?"

Kathryn answered in an even voice. "This morning was the first time we got to my quarters. Every other time, I was called to the bridge in response to a 'Red Alert' after I asked Seven to spend the night with me. It was the only time the sexual encounter happened."

Not surprised, Deanna inquired. "Why do you think this change occurred?"

Janeway thought for a few seconds before saying. "I am not exactly sure but I would say that it is related to the decision I made regarding resuming my friendship with her and Chakotay."

Deanna nodded in agreement and stated. "It is plain to see how deeply passionate you are where she is concerned. From what you have told me so far and from the research I have done, you and Seven have always shared a very special bond. Since you decided to sever her from the Collective you have felt responsible for her progress to regain her humanity. Although your relationship started out as fairly confrontational, it quickly grew to respect and admiration for each others abilities considering the situations you had to go through and your past experiences. You were a mentor but then it move to a friendship. How do you intend to resume your friendship with Seven without overstepping the boundaries of this type of relationship?"

The Captain organized her thoughts before answering calmly. "I know it will be hard to see them together as it has been for the past months but with your guidance, the help of friends and family, my willingness to go forward and my Starfleet training, I should move past this and do what is best for everybody concerned. I mean, since friendship is offered and desired from both of them I will make every effort to involve myself as a friend in their lives. I think I should start out slowly, it would be safer if I was not alone with Seven in an intimate setting. It is not that I think I would act inappropriately it is more that I think I could become overly cold and I would not want that for Seven. I think I have already done enough damage to our friendship as it is."

Continuing her questioning, Deanna said. "Will you tell Seven how you truly feel?"

"I don't think so." The Captain responded quickly.

"Why?" Deanna asked.

The older woman looked to the ground and responded in a soft voice. "I don't want to hurt her."

Deanna knew this next question was going to hurt Kathryn but it needed to be asked so she spoke gently. "How will you explain your behavior of the past few months to her?"

Kathryn shoulders slumped and her eyes pained before she sighed heavily and answered. "I don't know yet that's one of the things I need to work out before I can contact her. I can't lie to her but I can't tell her the whole truth either."

Knowing the Captain needed time to think thing through, Deanna decided to give her some directives and stated. "Kathryn, you have made some decisions concerning your relationship towards Seven and Chakotay. Before we see each other tomorrow at 09h00 I would like for you to think of specific situations when telling not a loved one the whole truth was a good solution and when it was a bad one."

"Ok." Kathryn responded.

Deanna purposefully changed the subject when she said. "I have another matter that I would like to discuss with you, it is regarding Ensign DiScala."

Instantly worried about her new developing relationship with the Counselor's assistant, Kathryn questioned. "What would you like to discuss, Deanna?"

Sensing the Captain's worry, Deanna quickly stated. "I noticed how she acted when she was in your presence yesterday. I am curious as to how you respond when such an attractive person shows that kind of response."

Somewhat relieved, Kathryn said. "Ensign DiScala case is different from any other experiences I've had. Captains are usually the object of harmless infatuation based on a power differential relationship. Cadet or inexperienced crew members sometimes admire their captain to the point of magnifying the commanding officer's positive qualities and minimizing of their negative ones. They project on to their captain a false image… as I am sure you know, we are often idolized and put on a pedestal. One grows out of fairly quickly when it is addressed appropriately. The key, I have found, is acting in the same manner I do with every one else. I would not advise a confrontation because it can lessen the other person already diminished self-confidence and that would defeat the purpose. The point is to let the other one know you better and find common grounds for healthy discussions. This way reality can set in and infatuation disappears."

Deanna wanted Janeway to focus the discussion towards her assistant so she asked. "What do you mean when you say that Ensign DiScala is different?"

Kathryn smiled knowingly and stated. "Deanna, I am certain that you already are aware of the deep nature of the young woman for me."

Deanna nodded and simply said. "Yes."

Knowing the Counselor wanted details from her, Kathryn unwillingly relented and said. "At first I thought it was one of those infatuation cases but after last night I know better. It was very tempting to fall back on the habits of the past months and just add her to my growing collection but I couldn't. I can't give her what she is asking me and it would not have been fair to her to lead her on. The people I have been with did not want anything more than the Captain. It's not the same in her case. I don't know exactly where she got her knowledge but she knows me, Kathryn Janeway the woman behind Voyager's Captain and she cares for the commanding officer but it is the woman that she's in love with."

Sensing that Janeway was hiding something regarding her assistant she asked. "Is there something I should know?"

Shaking her head at Deanna's maddening ability to cut to the chase, she said. "I might as well tell you. She is going to write my biography."

Surprised, Deanna said. "Why?"

Janeway thought for a split second and stated. "I've had a number of offers from professionals and I have refused them all because they lacked a greater purpose. They all wanted to make the biography of how Voyager's captain did this or that. That is simply not interesting enough… it has no value to me. Deedrah's biography of me will be a testament to how challenges can be faced either alone, with friends and family, with officers and crewmen, with other professionals or civilians while adhering to Starfleet and Federation principles and guidelines. My life will be used as a tool. It won't be like most biography… a ticker-tape parade with an endless listing of accomplishments. This biography will make every body see how they can have greatness in their lives."

Deanna's smile had grown brighter has Janeway revealed her reasoning for choosing Deedrah to write the biography and said in a cheerful voice. "I think it is a wonderful idea… I want to be the first one to read it. Deedrah is a gifted writer… she can make reports fun to read which as you well know is a rarity. I am certain her work will be exceptional."

Nodding her approval, Janeway stated. "Last night I read what she had done so far, I expected a good first draft but what I got is almost a finished product. It was extremely impressive."

Deanna needed to get specific answers from Kathryn regarding the nature of her relationship with her assistant so she asked. "How will the relationship between the two of you work?"

Knowing that this question was coming, Kathryn simply responded. "Our relationship will be based on a growing personal friendship. She has agreed to it. Although, I am certain she will want something more for a long time she will not act on it. Also, to make her life easier, she has asked me to refrain from entering her personal space for a while."

Deanna couldn't help but smile lightly at Deedrah's request and asked. "Why is that?"

Janeway half-smiled and snorted lightly before saying. "Let's just say that she can be very passionate and hard to resist. I am certain there must have been quite a few men and women drooling over her. Someone would have to be totally blind to not see how absolutely exquisite this woman is in every sense of the word."

Deanna agreed but she wanted to make Kathryn see the reality of their situation so she said. "Yes she has had her share but nothing came out of it. I guess she's waiting for you to give her chance."

Janeway shook her head and said a little annoyed. "Deanna, there is no chance to give. Seven has my heart."

'Deedrah, you, Seven and your army of conquests… Kathryn, I sincerely hope you understand the message I'm sending you.' Deanna thought before saying. "Kathryn, I think it is time for you to reflect on what we have discussed today. We've made a great deal of progress and we should arrive at a solution to all of this very soon."

Getting up as Deanna had done, the Captain reached for the Counselor's forearm and squeezed it lightly before she said. "Thank you Deanna, I'll leave you to your work. I will be here at 09h00 sharp." With that she turned and left.

11h34

Ensign DiScala had worked diligently on the report the Counselor had asked for the past two hours since Captain Janeway had went into the professional's office, she was close to finishing it when the office door opened.

Seeing no one around Kathryn asked. "Dee… Are you free for a working lunch?"

Smiling at the personal nature of the conversation, the younger woman answered happily. "Sure if you can give 40 minutes… I need to finish and hand in this report."

Janeway half-smiled and said. "No problem."

A few seconds ticked by before Deedrah asked. "Do you want me to meet you there directly?"

Nodding, the Captain said. "That would be a great idea." Thinking of Dr. Pulaski's request she asked. "How about the sushi bar down the street?"

Knowing how addicted to sushi she and the Captain were, Deedrah responded happily. "Perfect, I'll see you there in 40 minutes."

13h15

"Perfect. Since we are on the same page let's talk about something other than the biography." Janeway concluded.

"What?" Deedrah asked.

Thinking for a few moments, Janeway said. "Will you be comfortable working closely with me?"

The younger woman frowned and questioned. "Yes, why wouldn't I be?"

"Because of your feelings towards me." Janeway answered quickly.

With a slight shrug of her shoulders, Deedrah stated. "You are aware of them. I can not change them nor do I want to." Sensing that the Captain needed more she continued. "I would not have been able to work with or around you if that would not be the case. Deception is not something I am comfortable with, especially around the people I care deeply about. That is probably why I acted the way I did when I first saw you yesterday. I also learned from experience that hiding true feelings can only hurt you and the other person in the long run. Like my mother has told me a thousand times before: 'Each time you are honest and conduct yourself with honesty, a success force will drive you towards greater success. Each time you lie, even with a little white lie, there are strong forces pushing you towards failure.' I have lived by it most of my life and when I didn't it ended up in failure." Laughing a little she added. "I guess I will never be a good diplomat… diplomacy involves hiding one true feelings for the greater good."

Janeway frowned and declared. "I am not so sure about that. There is a big difference in hiding them for the greater good and acknowledging them and adjusting to them according to the situation. Isn't it what our relationship will be based on?"

Nodding the beautiful dark hair woman said. "You have a point there. I guess awareness and self-honesty is the key when feelings are concerned."

Looking at the time, Deedrah said. "I am sorry Kathryn but I need to get back to Headquarters."

"No need to be sorry. Thank you for accepting my invitation." Getting up she went to hug the other woman but stopped thinking of the promise she made.

Deedrah looked at her and said. "Oh hell… Who am I kidding? I want that hug."

They both laughed and hugged. By Janeway's definition the hug had been a little longer and more intimate than necessary but not inappropriate so she decided not say anything about it to Deedrah.

17h00

"Counselor Troi." Seven said when her computer console revealed the face of the person contacting her.

"Seven." Deanna said as she smiled at the ex-Borg obvious impatience.

Not in the habit of wasting time, Seven asked. "What have you concluded?"

Expecting this reaction from Seven, Deanna answered evenly. "I am of Chakotay's opinion. There is something between you and Kathryn that needs to be discussed at length, some personal feelings that have not been brought forth before. If you are to be close again, you both need to come to grips with your emotions, acknowledge them to yourself and to each other. Kathryn and I have an appointment at 09h00 tomorrow, I would like for you to be in my office at 09h30, and my assistant will let you if and in when I advise her to."

Seven nodded her approval of the proposed plan and stated. "For this occasion, I will trust your judgment Counselor."

Smiling to herself at how Seven's comment could be perceived as arrogant, Deanna simply said. "Seven. Before tomorrow's possible meeting, you need to research the true nature of your feelings for Kathryn and what you want to do about them."

Nodding again her approval, Seven asked. "Is there something else?"

"No Seven." Deanna answered.

She was about to close the comm channel when she remembered her social lessons and said. "Thank you Counselor."

Deanna smiled brightly at Seven's obvious attempt at diplomacy and said warmly. "You are welcome Seven. See you tomorrow."

18h30

"Kate?" The auburn hair woman asked in a raised voice when noticing that Dr. Pulaski's office was empty.

Katherine hearing the familiar voice responded from the private ensuite. "I'm in here Kathryn? I'll be out in a minute."

As she waited, the Captain took the time to appraise the very luxuriously appointed large space welcoming, warm space. The corner office overlooking the Bay and the stunning Headquarters grounds was filled with hardwood wood furnishings demonstrating expert craftsmanship, intricate but not overpowering hand carved design with inlay of leather, carved iron and hand painted details.

Every time she had come into this room since returning to Earth, she was amazed by the beauty of it. You could feel yourself drift into another era. There was a half round leather top walnut writing desk… an executive desk where lay hidden a computer console… an executive navy blue pure Aniline leather sitting chair… four Chippendale reclining leather chairs… a rugged looking drum table with hand-hammered copper sheets sides and top… variously sized and shaped ottomans… two terribly inviting leather couches lined with soft cushions… two side tables and a coffee table each with glass insert, carved iron legs and scrolled iron carvings along sides and top and bottom shelves canvassed in a rich honey leather… a fully functioning marble mantle wood fireplace… six large mahogany bookcases filled with leather bound books of classical literature… an antique floor clock… a fully non-replicated stocked marble top bar and five leather seat swivel stools… a solid oak poker table and four richly upholstered arm chairs with casters… a burled maple and mahogany pool table… an onyx and marble board set in a bronze, silver, and gold chest table with hand crafted bronze, gold, and silver pieces depicting Napoleon fighting the battle of Waterloo… beautiful paintings, sculptures, lighting fixtures and soft plush carpeting. It was truly magnificent. Every piece fit with the other, the room although quite large felt intimate and everything flowed gracefully from area to the other.

She immediately turned when the doctor came out of the ensuite, gave her a quick hug and said, as she handed her a bottle of 2317 Macallan 52 year old single malt Scotch. "As promised."

Looking down at the bottle, Pulaski eyebrows shot up in blissful surprise as she recognized the extremely rare vintage and said teasingly. "That must have been some session."

Kathryn smiled at the doctor's obvious show of delight.

Knowing how expensive the bottle was and how the Captain hated when people said things like 'I can't accept this', 'This is too much' or some other remark as to the value of the gift, she simply said. "Thank you Kathryn. Want some?"

"Why not?" The commanding officer responded with a smile.

Katherine handed the auburn woman a glass and inquired. "How were you able to get your hands on this little treasure?"

"Being Voyager's captain has its advantages. This afternoon, I went to Scotland and met with the owners of the distillery. They are very friendly and sincere people. They are also great fans, specially their 13 year old son, his room is filled with authentic memorabilia. He's been dreaming of entering the Academy since he was 6… You should have seen him when I walked into his room, his eyes almost popped out of his head." She laughed at the memory and continued. "We talked a little and encouraged him to continue his studies. He is a very dedicated and bright young man so I decided to give him my personal mail account in exchange for total secrecy and weekly reports on his progress. The parents were so happy that they let me have access to a private collection that is supposed to be auctioned in three months so I bought seven bottles."

Smirking, the older said. "I was thinking of letting our friendship falter but now I've changed my mind… we're obviously going to stay friends for a long time."

The last two hours had gone by quickly. Each comfortably sitting on one of the leather couches next to the fireplace, they had been drinking, talking and reminiscing for a couple of hours now when Janeway finally asked. "How did you get Starfleet to agree to get your office to look like this, these furnishings are not exactly standard issue?"

Pulaski told her how she had been adamant about her comfort when Starfleet had asked her to become the Head of Starfleet Medical. She recalled the conversation that had convinced the brass to go ahead with her plan. "I told them in these words. 'If I'm going to spend almost two thirds of my day here for the next ten years I'm damn well going to be very comfortable. You all know I am by nature grumpy… Think of it as being for the good of every one around me since I can be even be sweet and understanding when I'm comfortable.' They agreed that a happy commanding officer makes for a happy crew and approved the changes. As you have certainly recognized, I brought in a lot of personal furnishing… as for the rest they let me choose."

Impressed by the display of the doctor's bargaining skills, she said. "Maybe you can negotiate for me when the time comes."

Katherine chuckled, thought for a few seconds and stated. "It shouldn't be long… admiral next to your name does have a ring to it." Looking at the surprised Captain, the older woman added. "I do have access to all kinds of drugs you know and people do say a lot of things when they are being treated. Poker games and large amounts of alcohol are also amongst the tools of the trade."

The doctor's dry somewhat sarcastic sense of humor had Janeway once again laughing heartily. After sipping her drink, Pulaski asked. "When will it become official?"

The Captain thought of her conversations with Counselor Troi and stated. "Starfleet is waiting for me to get some personal stuff under control."

Snorting the doctor stated in a slightly annoyed tone. "Come on Kathryn, you can't be telling me that Starfleet is holding on to the admiral promotion until your sexual escapades are over."

Hearing the words concerning to her 'personal' life, Kathryn, obviously miffed, frowned and complained. "Jesus Kate… don't I have any secrets left from you."

The doctor answered quickly with a sharp tongue. "There is one that you haven't told me about yet but your conquests are not really secrets… they're fast becoming legendary amongst gossipers. You're famous Kathryn… maybe you don't realize it but it is true none the less."

Out of incomprehension, she frowned again and inquired. "What do you mean when you say that there is one I haven't told you?"

Looking directly into Janeway's eye, the older woman saw how the Captain seemed to be hurt from her previous statement and responded in a softer voice. "I mean that it doesn't make sense Kathryn. You're not the first commanding officer to come back from a long mission and go on a little sexual rampage. It can't be because you're now interested in both men and women… we've cleared all the prejudiced dinosaurs from Starfleet a very long time ago. I can only conclude that there must something that you're not telling me."

When she saw that Janeway was lost in thought, Pulaski said. "If you don't mind me asking, why do you see Deanna?"

"She's trying to help me get emotional closure." Janeway responded.

Frustrated with Janeway's evasiveness, the doctor couldn't keep her temper under control and barked. "Come on Kathryn, you and me have been to hell and back and we left 'sugar coating things' a long time ago. So, please save me the clinical expressions and tell me in plain English."

Sighing heavily in understanding, Janeway stated. "It is regarding the relationship between Seven of Nine and Chakotay."

Frowning, the doctor asked. "What of it? If I understood things right they're friends of yours or is there more…" Seeing the look her words triggered on Janeway's face Kate declared. "You're in love with one of them." Janeway nodded. Pulaski thought for a few seconds and stated. "Seven."

Nodding once again, Kathryn said. "She does not have a clue. She thinks I've been avoiding her because of some unknown rule regarding breaking family bonds shared on Voyager and letting people move on with their lives. Anyhow, that's what I told Chakotay. I suppose he let Seven know but I really have no clue as to if he did so or not."

Sipping her drink once again, Pulaski analyzed the information she had gathered so far and uttered the conclusion she had come to. "I understand why Starfleet would want you to settle this... Don't take this the wrong way but Seven is priceless. Ferengis, Cardassians, Breens, Romulans or any other faction opposing the Federation could go to great lengths to get her or get to her if they had knowledge that was kept secret. Think of how they could manipulate you, Seven or Chakotay… After the last wars, Starfleet does not need a gung ho admiral in its ranks and that is exactly want you could become. I mean you've done it before when you went after the Borg to get her back." Seeing Janeway about to object, she added. "I know you say you would have done exactly the same if it had been any other member of your crew but I am no sure you would have reacted so strongly. Remember the incident with the Equinox… that's another prime example. You were definitely close to breaking principles that you had lived by all your life. I can't say I blame you, I would have done the exact same thing. Kathryn, one thing I am unequivocally certain of if that Starfleet will wait until they know the exact nature of your relationship with her and until Seven and Chakotay are aware of it your feelings. There is also the fact that she is devoted to you and her Voyager Collective. She has demonstrated in the past that she could and would do anything to protect you and them from perceived threats. If deception is not something she understands… she could be easily manipulated if she was kept in the dark." Looking the Captain in the eyes she stated. "You have to tell her Kathryn."

Looking back, Janeway said honestly. "Being an admiral is not my first priority Kate. I want Seven to experience freely her newfound love with Chakotay. I don't think it would be fair for me to put extra pressure on an already inexperienced woman because Starfleet needs another admiral."

Pulaski shook her head in disapproval and asked. "How would you know if she needs any 'protection' from you? If I am not mistaken you haven't discussed anything remotely connected to this particular subject with her in months."

Kathryn eyes took on a deeply wounded look as she sighed heavily, nodded and said in a small voice. "True."

Kate noticed how the commanding officer's eyes had taken on a grey tint and commented reassuringly. "Kathryn, from what I have witnessed and read Seven is an exceedingly brilliant woman, she still might be socially inept for Earth standards but she has shown tremendous capacity to adapt to new situations and environments. You're not giving her the benefit of the doubt and I don't see why you should keep your feelings from her. It may be a little awkward at first but it will get better after you establish some boundaries."

Silence fell over them as they continued to sip their Scotch, each lost in thought. After a few minutes, Kate turned towards Kathryn, she was looking in to the fire. The last remaining flames highlighting Janeway's auburn hair, her face reflected intense concentration. The older woman thought. 'Kathryn, what are you trying to do to yourself? Can't you see that this is not about duty anymore but only about the woman behind the commanding officer? Starfleet is not worried about the Captain… they're worried about Kathryn, the Kathryn that is screaming to come out.'

They had both finished their drinks and were staring into the fire when Kate looked to Kathryn and said.

"Let this old broad tell you something, Kathryn." She waited until Janeway's eye bore into hers before continuing. "If I had been as honest as I have been with you with the men in my life, I don't think I would have been married and divorced three times in twelve years. In fact, I don't think I would have married any of them… Kyle Riker would have been it for me." Thinking back to the intense relationship she had shared with Will Riker's father in 2353 near the Tholian border she added. "But that is in the past and there is no point wallowing about something you can't change. Now, I don't hide who I am and how I feel when I am dealing with people on a personal level. I have learned from my past experiences and who knows what the future holds for my love life." Seeing that Janeway understood the meaning behind this story the doctor asked. "Why do you think we are such good friends, Kathryn?"

Janeway quickly answered. "We've supported each other even when we've made mistakes. We don't mind discussing matter we don't agree on. We don't hide things… not for long anyway and we look out for each other's interests."

Before the Captain could continue, Katherine added to Janeway's explanation by saying. "I don't think it should be any different for anyone you really want to be close to. It's the only way they'll get to know you truly."

Sighing a little in understanding, Janeway declared. "It is exactly how it used to be between Seven and me except I could only be her Captain and by the time I could be something else Chakotay was in the picture."

Pulaski in agreement with her long time friend only said. "Well Kathryn you can't do anything about the past but you sure as hell can take steps to make your future a better one."

"I know you're right but I need to think this over some more." Kathryn noted in a low voice.

Knowing that it was better to move the conversation to another topic, Kate spoke. "I've given you my honest opinion so I'm not going to repeat myself. Now, how about another drink before with hit the road?"

Smiling slightly, Janeway nodded and said. "Good idea."

They talked for another hour before both deciding to go home and catch some much needed sleep.

June 17th 2378

O6h30

Janeway had just woken from the first good night of sleep she had had in months. She smiled at the dream that confirmed everything she had decided in the two previous days.

"How could I have forgotten that?" She said to herself.

"I remembered but I did not think it would have been appropriate to bring it up." The little voice chimed.

"You're right." The Captain responded.

Teasing, her little voice responded. "As usual but thank you for acknowledging it your 'greatness'. Now go fix things that need fixing."

Rolling her eyes, Janeway retorted. "Yes. Phoebe."

Sarcastic, the little voice said. "Now I know why I liked your sister."

09h05

Coffee in hand, Kathryn stood in Deanna Troi's office looking outside towards the bay and said. "Deanna, do you believe that the dead speak to us?"

"Yes I do. Sometimes when I have a very difficult personal decision to make, I feel my father's presence very strongly. In 2365, when my son Ian died, my father helped me significantly to understand the loss. In my dreams I had entire conversation with him regarding my mourning and overcoming the loss. I didn't know it at the time but my parents lost my sister Kestra by in a drowning accident when I was an infant. Why do you ask?"

"As you know, my father died on Tau Ceti Prime. After his death I was severely depressed for a long time. It was my sister Phoebe who literally dragged me out of bed and got me back to the world of the living again. During my recovery, I told her several times that I was certain he had been with me in the room. Ever since then when I was in deep personal trouble, I would feel his presence and I would talk to him. I know it is illogical and not very scientific but it would help. I also used to dream of him and like you I had conversations with him regarding different subjects… My father came to me in a dream this morning it had been almost nine years since his last visit."

Looking at Janeway who was drinking her coffee, Deanna felt Kathryn's inner turmoil about her father and said in a calm soothing voice. "Tell me about the dream."

Kathryn's mouth turned upwards as she began her account. "I was sailing about 30 miles up the coast. The weather was absolutely perfect for it, 85 degrees with a light breeze. Seven and Chakotay were with me and we were having a good time. I went below deck into the cabin to get something to drink, my father was there waiting for me. He looked at me and said. 'Kathryn you know how I always told you that if there was a rocky path and a smooth one, you'd chose the rocky one every time. Well I am glad you finally discovered that the smooth one can also be challenging and show you the way to greater and better things. Here take these drinks and go back up.' I went back up and when I opened the hatch Seven was there and she smiled at me." Deanna nodded and stated. "Ever since you came in today, I sense a calm that I have not felt before. You I be wrong to say that you have come to a decision regarding Seven and Chakotay."

Janeway smiled and said. "No. I have made a decision." She drank from her cup before continuing. "In fact, sending a message to her is my first priority when I leave your office. I am going to ask her and Chakotay over for a talk. It's about time the truth came out and I need my friends back."

"What would you do if only one of them could come?" Deanna asked knowing who was standing in the reception area.

Janeway looked into the Counselor's dark brown eyes, squinted and said. "Is there someone outside waiting for you to approve their entry?"

Deanna was surprised by Kathryn question and asked. "Why would you think that?"

The Captain looked over to the computer console on Deanna's desk and responded in a calm confident tone. "Deanna, I may a little thick concerning my personal affairs but that has never been the case in regards to others. You have twice moved slightly over to the side in order to view the console." Observing Deanna body language for any sign of approval she continued. "You have also looked in the window's reflection with an angle that would coincide with the reflected image of that same console. You scratched your right elbow when I came in and again before your last question and hesitated just a little before speaking both times. I may not know you like Will but I have observed you enough to know something is up with. Further more, the line of questioning you adopted after I said that I was going to contact them was also another hint. When I put all of these signs together, that's the only conclusion I can come up with."

"I am sorry." Deanna said with honesty showing in her eyes. "I did not want you to notice that. I do not want you to feel obligated to see that person. I only made the request in case you'd wanted to."

Thinking it was Chakotay waiting outside, Kathryn said. "It's okay. You can show the person in but I'd like to be alone with that individual. I will contact you if either one of us needs your professional opinion."

Smiling, Deanna said. "I will be in the other office working if the need arises. Take all the time you need, I can work in the other office since it is a copy of this one." Before she leaving the room Deanna added. "Thank you for your understanding Kathryn."

As soon as the door to the office opened, Seven got up to greet the smaller dark hair woman. Nodding she said. "Counselor Troi."

Deanna smiled and opened. "Thank you for coming Seven I'm sorry to have kept you waiting."

Seven answered in an even voice. "Not coming would have meant failure and that would be unacceptable. You have not kept me waiting Counselor, I had expected such an occurrence since I have found that 91.7% of discussions regarding emotions last 29.4 % longer than anticipated. There was still 1.41 minutes before waiting would occur."

It was obvious to the Counselor that Seven was extremely nervous. The cool demeanor the tall blond showed externally was only for show. She knew from experience that the ex-Borg only went back to very precise explanation when she felt threatened somehow. Waiting to see if the Captain wanted to meet with her was obviously very upsetting so Deanna told her. "Seven, the Captain is inside. You do not have to go in if you do not want to." Waiting for an answer that did not come, Deanna continued. "If you're hesitant, I can go back inside and you can tell Ensign DiScala if and when you are ready to come in. She will let me know of your decision and I will come out and let you in."

Seven responded quickly. "My hesitation is not due to a… 'change of heart' Counselor, I was merely evaluating the time it would take the Captain and I to come to an understanding." Seeing Deanna frown she asked. "Do you not need your office to work?"

'How can people who analyze Seven's action ever think her as unfeeling. It is no wonder Kathryn is in love with her. She is absolutely delightful.' Deanna thought before she smiled and answered. "That is very thoughtful of you Seven but I have another office just next door and it is in every way the same office so you do not have to worry about time. I will be there if you feel the need for my professional services."

Seven nodded to Deanna and walked into the Counselor's office. When the door opened, Kathryn was standing by the window finishing her coffee. The look of complete shock that appeared on Kathryn's face was enough to stop Seven dead in her tracks.

"I am sorry you are still mad at me Captain. If I had foreseen this kind of reaction from you for telling you I was developing a new gravimetric array when I used the holodeck for forty nine hours in six days aboard Voyager instead of telling you the true purpose which was to try to recreate some of the experiences I had lived in Unimatrix Zero I would have chosen otherwise." Before she could say anything Seven continued. "Captain, ever since it was destroyed, my life had seemed incomplete. I wanted to feel those emotions again but I did not want to burden you Captain since your command decision was partly responsible for the destruction of Unimatrix Zero so I ran simulations. I am sorry for lying Captain." Janeway was speechless, Seven took it as a sign of rejection so she blinked away tears that were welling up in her ice blue eyes and went on in a slightly quavering voice that confirmed the distress she felt. "I did not think that the personal friendship we shared would become irrelevant to you by doing so Captain. I am sorry to have forced you to meet with me Captain, I won't ever call on you again in a personal manner."

When Seven turned around quickly and walked towards the door, Kathryn recovered her senses and said. "Seven wait… please."

The tall blond woman turned around and Kathryn's heart stopped when she saw tears flowing freely down the beautiful face. She rushed over to Seven and held her tightly and said. "It is me who is sorry Seven. I knew you had lied to me and I had to find out the kind of simulations you were running and I did... If I distanced myself from you it is because I wanted to give you the freedom you seem to need in order to explore those feelings again. I am sorry I made you feel as though you are not important to me. Nothing could be further from the truth Seven." Kathryn wanted to stop talking but she kept on speaking her heart. "In fact Seven, there another reason I have distanced myself from you." She stopped talking and cupped gently Seven's face in her hands and spoke as she looked directly in the taller woman's eyes. "It hurt me to see you Seven. Every time I looked at you I would imagine you experiencing those emotions with someone other than me and when I learned of your involvement with the real Chakotay I could not bare to see you with him... Seven I wanted to be the one to show you. I wanted to make you feel those emotions... I wanted to be the one you came home at night… I wanted to be the one you spoke to when you needed it… I wanted to be the one you'd make love to… Seven, being lost in the Delta Quadrant was the best thing that happened to me because I found you but it has also been the worst because I lost you to one of my closest friend a man I admire greatly. Being your Captain aboard Voyager had made the choice for me, I could only love you from afar… We came back to Earth to late for me to see if those feelings could lead to something more… I am sorry Seven if I hurt you but I felt you deserved to know why I have acted this way towards you and Chakotay and why I have tried so hard to replace you somehow but now I know that could never be. I am in love with you Seven of Nine, tertiary adjunct of Unimatrix zero one. I love everything about you but I will not ask anything more of you than friendship. I do not want to come between you and Chakotay. I would never do that to either one of you. So if you still want me in your life Seven, I will be glad to. I only ask that you be patient with me. It won't be easy for my heart to see you with Chakotay but I will adapt with time."

As the Captain spoke Seven could feel her heart beginning to race furiously, her skin temperature had elevated, her chest heaved as quick shallow breaths were taken and her stomach fluttered with growing intensity. She had felt those sensations before in Unimatrix Zero but not as strongly as she did now. When the older woman finished speaking, Seven stated plainly. "You are in love with me."

Janeway dropped her hands to her side, nodded and said. "Yes. I am hopelessly in love with you Seven and I don't think those feelings will ever diminish."

When Kathryn saw Seven smile brightly, she did not understand. Only when Seven cupped her face and said as she lowered her head towards Kathryn's. "Hopeless is an adjective that you will never use again when describing your love for me because I love you as well Captain."

Hearing the last word Janeway amended. "Kathryn. To you I am Kathryn."

Seeing that glorious smile again, Janeway thought that there was nothing in the universe that could compete with its beauty. But her thoughts quickly disappeared when she felt Seven's full lips brush her own softly. The feel of those luscious lips… nothing could ever come close to that sensation.

As Seven brushed her lips again against hers, Kathryn responded by moving her own beneath Seven's and putting her hands on the younger woman's hips and pulling her close to her body. Kathryn's lips were on fire and her blood was throbbing in her ears as Seven brushed them against hers more forcefully. Kathryn had waited so long to feel the velvet lips, to taste that sweet nectar, she couldn't hold on anymore as her mouth became hard on Seven's. She put all the passion she had kept bottled inside for so long and took control of the kiss as she pulled Seven's body even closer to hers.

Seven responded by kissing Kathryn even harder, her mouth was demanding, bruising. She parted the smaller woman's lips and slipped her tongue in a wonderfully welcoming soft, honey tasting one.

Each one returns the other kisses with more and more fervor. They both knew they have never felt like this before… the electricity between them was palpable. Blood was cursing true their veins with such force that they're almost dizzy with need for the other. They were completely lost in each other's kisses when the door to the Counselor's office opened to let someone in.

Ensign DiScala had cleared her throat twice in the last fifteen seconds but to no avail, she tried again to get the women's attention but then she relented and finally said loudly. "I am sorry Captain but there is someone here to see you."

Startled by the other woman presence, Kathryn and Seven swiftly broke their heated embrace. "I am sorry Ensign DiScala. What did you say?" Kathryn asked a little embarrassed by the situation.

"There is someone here to see you Captain." Deedrah repeated coolly.

"Thank you Ensign DiScala. Give me one minute, I will be right out." Janeway stated.

After the Counselor's assistant had left the room, Seven turned to Kathryn, smiled and stated in a voice that broke no argument. "You will now take me to Bloomington Indiana Kathryn. I want to meet your mother."

Janeway laughed heartily at Seven's impatience and said as she looked in the mirror to check her appearance before walking towards the door. "I love you Seven and my mother will adore you to."

The End
