Omega: Jaded

Captain’s Log: Star date 542534.

“The last of the crew’s celebrations from Earth’s old calendar holidays ended last night.  Morale is up considering Voyager’s dwindling supplies.  Voyager is in need of minor repairs on secondary systems; I have Astrometrics searching for a location suitable for repairs or trade where we can obtain supplies.  A promising break has emerged; long-range sensors show several M-class planets that may have what we need.”

Let’s just hope that luck is still on our side,” The captain thought to herself.

The doorway chirped, breaking her moment of concentration.  “End log.”  Turning her chair to face the door, she spoke…”Come.”

Commander Chakotay walked in, standing before the captain’s desk.  “Captain, here are the reports you wanted,” he says as he placed the padds on the desk.  “One of the planets looks very promising.  ”  Chakotay remained standing pausing to consider his next words.  “Captain, permission to speak freely?”

Janeway looked up from the padds she was reading and sighed.  She waved her hand, indicating for him to continue, while studying the crinkle of his tattoo above his left eye as he spoke.

“Captain, I have noticed that you seem to be a bit – distracted - lately.  Is there anything the matter? Something that I may be able to help you with?”

“Thank you for your concern, but really, nothing is wrong.  I just have a lot on my mind, Chakotay.”

Janeway looked at him and knew he was not convinced.

“I’m fine, really!  Besides, don’t you have work to do? Instead of worrying about me.”  She said, trying to change the subject, giving him a sheepish smile.  “This ship is important to both of us and I am sure I will feel better once I see that it is running at optimal levels.  So why don’t we get to the business at hand?”  With that Captain Janeway, proceeded to review each padd briefly, knowing that for the most part they would contain the same information they did last week, and last month and last year.

She thought she had been coping with her bouts of depression and frustrations privately.  Thus, she was not aware when her moods had become so apparent.  Captain Janeway hoped that her depression was evident only to her first officer due to the time they had to spend together, and not the rest of the crew.

Chakotay reluctantly conceded.  “The briefing with the senior staff will be at 0920 hours.  Captain -Katherine - you know I’m here if you change your mind and want to talk.”  With that said, Chakotay turned around and left the room.

Janeway watched him leave. Chakotay has been very supportive, a wonderful friend.  He would have been the obvious choice as a mate considering our circumstances out here in the Delta quadrant.  Still, I value his friendship more than anything else and so it will remain.  My responsibilities are larger than any loneliness. Remember - they didn’t sign up for this Katie, you brought them here.

“V’ordack, an M-class planet, has three moons, an abundance of water and varied terrain.  Life forms are humanoid, possessing advanced technology comparable to that of the Federation.  Their socio-political structure is based on three sects.  The ruling sect is cordial, made up of missionaries.  I do not anticipate any difficulties in diplomatic relations, Captain.”

Tuvok briefed the captain and senior staff with intelligence gathered during his recent away mission.

“This is a First Contact situation, people.  Let’s proceed with the best diplomatic skills and caution we have.  I don’t want to do anything to disrupt positive relations,” Janeway said.

“I believe you are correct.  It also appears that the V’ordack people have the necessary supplies and mechanical capabilities to overhaul Voyager’s systems.  It would be wise to take full advantage of this opportunity,” Tuvok added.

Putting her silver mug filled with coffee down on the table, she placed her hand on Tuvok’s.  “Then it’s a plan,” she said, looking up at her senior staff.  “Great work!  Chakotay, plan a tentative shore leave schedule for the crew, just in case all goes well and our stay here on V’ordack is extensive.”  She turned her head quickly from side to side, barking the rest of her orders, “Tuvok and I will conduct the preliminary arrangements with the government.  B’Elanna, set up a team to supervise the overhaul on the ship’s systems.”  She stood up. “Neelix, Harry, the two of you review the supply list and current inventory and send it to Chakotay when it is complete.  Meeting dismissed.”

The senior staff exited the conference room to the bridge.  The Alpha crew resumed their positions, while the rest return to their respective stations.

Janeway stood before the view screen. “Open a channel to the V’ordack home world.  I'm Captain Janeway of the Federation Starship Voyager.  We are a scientific vessel and we are in need of supplies; we would like to speak to your government and we wish to make arrangements for trade and repairs.”

“Message received Captain.” Tuvok reported.  Moments later, “Incoming message…

“Onscreen.”

Three individuals stood side by side.  An older male in the middle, with a mane of light brown hair and a chin with light ornate tattoo designs, which resembles water movement in a lake, when he speaks, “Greetings Captain Janeway of Voyager and Peace unto You and your crew.”

Janeway smiled, thinking to herself…”this is a good start”.

The Captain’s contact with the planet’s sovereign went exceptionally well.  Soon thereafter, a liaison was assigned by their government to assist Voyager with getting supplies.  While Janeway and Tuvok were busy with negotiations, the rest of the staff hurriedly finished their work assignments.  Paris and Seven were assigned to give a tour of Voyager to Liaison Tannia, the representative from the V’ordack E-Con.  Of the three sects, the E-Con is the senior most sect, based on a belief that ecology is the mother of all life.  Being the senior of the three sects’ the E-Con also has the deciding vote on issues, and acts as the welcoming body to other species throughout the quadrant.

Liaison Tannia, Ambassador III, of the V’ordack E-Con is a tall, slim woman, with mid-length strawberry-blonde hair and green-gray eyes.  Tannia, a female with exquisite features, graceful, yet athletically built, wore a dark purple and green closely fitted suit that revealed her ample breast.  Paris continually complimented Liaison Tannia’s attire.  Seven thought about hitting him, since that is what B’Elanna would have done if she were there, but considered under the circumstances that it would not be wise.  Instead, she decided to give him one of Captain Janeway’s glares, but Paris shrugged his shoulders in response and continued walking besides Tannia.  Seven then regarded Ambassador Tannia’s attire, looking for whatever it was that had Paris so intrigued.

Aesthetically I suppose she is attractive.  Her shaped eyebrows and long neck are likely to be her most compelling feature, other than the shaped-patterned chin her species seems to share.  Perhaps it is that at which Mr. Paris is looking.” Seven thought to herself.

On the Bridge, Seven relaxed somewhat relieved that the tour was ending.  She disliked these diplomatic missions often requiring her to use social skills that she was still developing and perfecting along the way.  “This concludes our tour, Liaison Tannia of V’ordack E-Con.  The Captain…”

Paris interrupted, “has returned from the surface from meeting with your government and would like you to wait in her ready room.  She will be with you shortly.”

Seven arched her brow at Paris.

“Thank you for the tour.  Your starship is spectacular.  My government will be highly impressed with some of the technology you possess.  And please, call me Tannia,” she said looking directly at Seven.

Paris immediately held out his arm to escort her to the ready room “By all means.  This way, Tannia,” he said and glanced at Seven who followed behind.

A few seconds later Captain Janeway arrived and greeted Liaison Tannia, her diplomatic demeanor on full alert, Paris and Seven, impressed, watched as she poured on the charm.  Janeway was a pure natural.

“I am hopeful the tour on Voyager went well,” she said looking behind Tannia to Paris and Seven.

“Yes, Captain, all went well.  If you do not require my assistance any further, I will be in Astrometrics.”

“Very well, thank you, Seven.”  Janeway nodded as Seven left.

Janeway looked at Paris who suddenly squirmed when he realized she expected him to leave as well.

“Captain, let me know if you would like me to keep Tannia company.”  Paris shot a boyish grin to Tannia as he left walking backward towards the door.

Janeway resumed, “Liaison Tannia, Ambassador III of E-Con, I will be returning to your planet to continue bargaining sessions with your government.  You will be staying on Voyager for sometime and have made accommodations in our guest quarters.  They are located down the hall, from my first officer, Chakotay and mine.  If you have sometime now, I would like to escort you personally to your quarters.  I want to be certain that everything is in order.”

“I believe I would like that, Captain Kathryn Janeway of Voyager.” Tannia replied.

Is it necessary to be so formal? I would prefer Liaison Tannia or Ambassador,” she insisted.

“If you wish.  As it seems that Voyager will be stationed here for quite sometime, it makes sense to eliminate some formalities, so by all means, call me Captain or Captain Janeway, please,” Janeway replied.

The Captain stood up and ushered her to the exit of her ready room, following behind Tannia.

Days passed quickly.  Tannia continued to be delighted by the holodeck and Voyager’s collection of literature, culture and foods.  Tannia soon found herself infatuated, extremely taken by the Humans.

The Captain was returning to the surface to V’ordack’s headquarters in the City and Tannia joined her as they talked about a host of subjects, exchanging pleasant conversation.  Due to repairs, transporters were temporarily off-line and the women had to shuttle to the surface.

Janeway worked the controls with ease to Liaison Tania’s surprise and both women discovered a mutual interest in science.  Captain Janeway enjoyed the intelligent and lively conversation that rarely presented itself.

Captain Janeway wondered if Seven was working out well as Voyager’s intermediary with Liaison Tannia, then dismissed the thought, realizing she had every confidence in her Astrometrics Officer.  Seven of Nine, had come a long way in grasping her humanity.  She felt better knowing that she had chosen the correct person, and in the same instance, presented more opportunities for the Borg to grow personally and increase her experiences with social interactions.  Janeway was curious to ask Tannia how Seven and she were getting along, but thought the better of it.  Actually, Janeway realized it had been sometime since Seven and she had time either to play velocity or for their evenings of philosophical discussion.

Janeway listened intently as Liaison Tannia spoke of her experiences with the crew and of the many interesting technologies Voyager possessed.

“Captain you are quite fortunate to possess such a fine ship and crew.  I find your cultures and varied crew from the Alpha Quadrant very interesting.  Your Holodeck and replicator programming are truly amazing.  Risa is my favorite place, since my world believes in a enthralling and calming existence.  I'm highly impressed with the abundance of foods and music Voyager has available.  I must have eaten a little too much these pass few days.  Neelix is so pleasant and I’m convinced he is secretly attempting to  fatten me up Captain.”  Liaison Tannia laughed out-loud filled with obvious pleasure.  “Everyone has been just wonderful.” Tannia ended.

Satisfied, Janeway said, “Liaison Tannia I am very proud of my crew and the ship and very pleased that your experiences have been positive.”  Janeway smiled brilliantly.  Captain Janeway noticed almost immediately the change in the woman’s voice was tentative and the expression on her face pensive.

Tannia asked cautiously.  “Captain Janeway, I am not certain how to proceed into this next subject matter, since I am not completely cognizant of your customs and policies regarding your crew.  I had hoped we would have had an opportunity to discuss it by now.”

“Is there something wrong?” Janeway said concerned.

“No, not at all, I only ask due to my interest in one of your crew members who may already be romantically involved.  And well, if there is the problem with fraternizing with new species, I would completely understand.”  Tannia cautiously continued,  “I seek your permission, of course.”

“None needed.  Yes, there is always concern when first introduced to a species which may or may not be compatible with humans or other inter-species issues that can arise, however that has been researched by Voyager’s Doctor and his report stated that there is no need for apprehension.” Janeway offered."

“Yes, I have also been informed by my home world scientists that we are a compatible species in many ways. Your crew shares a level of spirtuality that we hold dear as well.   I am concerned with whether the crew was permitted to engage with other species.  I’m also not positive about any current attachments among the crew themselves.”  Tannia added.

“As for attachments, I don’t usually venture into my crew’s social or romantic life unless it begins to encumber with ship’s operations.  I’m sure you understand.”  Janeway added, while wondering which crew member Tannia was possibly interested in.  Then it made sense.

“Yes, of course Captain.  I have met many interesting individuals aboard Voyager.  For instance, the two crew members who showed me Voyager on the first day, are they a couple?  And if not, can I approach one of them?”

“No Seven and Tom are not a couple.  As far as I can comfortably be at liberty to say, I believe Tom Paris is involved with my ship’s engineer; a  Klingon-human female, you may have met her, Lt. B’Elanna Torres.  I’m not sure as to the status of their relationship, last I heard, Tom is very much off-limits,” Janeway picked up her coffee to take a sip when she finished speaking.

"No I don't believe that I have met her."  said Liaison Tannia laughing softly.  Then realizing what Captain Janeway was eluding to she continued.   “Oh no! Captain Janeway, I am interested in the Borg, Seven of Nine, your Astrometrics Officer, with whom you had paired me.  We have also been working closely together on the Jetta science project with my government."

Janeway suddenly found herself controlling the urge to either choke on her drink or spit in out.

A brief silence filled the air.  Janeway finally continued.  “I see.  I apologize for my assumption.  I was unacquainted of that part of your customs, culture.  V’ordack has same sex pairings, I had not realized.”

“That is quite alright, Captain.  I believe, I had assumed as well…”

The Captain reassured her.  “No you are correct.  Humans do pair as you concluded.  We have a few same-sex couples on Voyager.” She paused, her face becoming more serious.

Liaison Tannia, waited patiently, then asked again.  “Is Seven available?”

“I’m not sure, I don’t think so.”  Janeway said distractedly.  “In fact, I believe she is quite new to the whole idea of dating and relationships.” The Captain added protectively.  She is an innocent. thought Janeway.  She could kick her self right now for reacting the way she was, but was positive the woman was unaware of her insides turning  “I recommend anyone to proceed carefully, her last date ended up with a dislocated shoulder.”  Janeway frowned, looking down, pretending to look at the controls.

“How intriguing.  Thank you Captain, you have been most helpful.  Moreover, I reassure you I will be most careful and respectful to Seven and her wishes, Captain.  Tannia continued to speak about her experiences aboard Voyager and her encounters with the crew.

Janeway listened without saying a word for the rest of the trip.

Finally they had arrived at the shuttle landing, quickly exited the shuttle and walked toward Tuvok who was waiting for Captain Janeway.  They proceeded with Liaison Tannia to the Capital.

Once there, she pleasantly greeted the heads of State and took her assigned place seat at the conference table with other negotiators.  Liaison Tannia sat next to Tuvok while Janeway was seated across from them.

The conference room, was well illuminated and had crisp white walls.  A grand buffet table was set along one side.  It contained water and other beverages on its center, as well as yellow and red blooms.  The Senator and his consultants wore long gowns of various vibrant colors.  The wood table shined to a prefect reflection.  The leather chairs were extremely comfortable, beckoning a person to relax and drift off, making it difficult to concentrate at times.

The negotiations were long, but went well.  Finally, both sides came to an amiable agreement.  Then the officials invited them to a tour and an early dinner.  Reluctantly Janeway accepted the invitation, for that meant she would have to spend the rest of the afternoon and possibly, early evening with the V’ordack officials.  She desperately wanted only to return to Voyager, to the comfort of her quarters.

As everyone was leaving the conference room to continue to the next destination, Janeway observed Liaison Tannia speaking with the Senator.  Liaison Tannia walked over to Captain Janeway and Tuvok, who was standing next to her, Tannia extended her hands to her.

Janeway did not want to take her hands but to break them instead.  “Captain Janeway, I wish I could stay, but I should return to Voyager to continue my work with the Jetta project and Seven of Nine is probably expecting me to return.”  Tannia paused. “I’m sure you understand my eagerness to complete the project.” Janeway offered her hands in turn, twitched at the mention of Seven’s name, then smiled and nodded.  Janeway watched as Liaison Tannia walked away, realizing that Tannia was indeed a beautiful woman.  She wondered if Seven would accept Tannia’s offer of companionship.  She turned to follow the rest of the group and tried not to think about it for the remainder of the day.

Janeway’s game during the negotiations was slightly off and she knew Tuvok was well aware that something was not right.  After an undetermined amount of time, Tuvok concluded it had something to do with Liaison Tannia, satisfied for now that it was only a matter of time before he would know what the problem truly was.  The captain avoided Tuvok and knew she would have to deal with Tuvok when they returned to the ship.  As for the leaders of V’ordack, they were oblivious to Captain Janeway’s demeanor.

Seven was in Cargo Bay 2 when the doors slid opened and Liaison Tannia approached her at the console.

“I went to Astrometrics and you were not there.  Do we not usually work on the Jetta project at this time?”  Tannia inquired.

I was not aware that we were to work on the project today since you had been called back to V’ordack.  I assume all has gone well and that we are to continue on the project then.  Seven continued working.

“Yes it did.  Your Captain is excellent and very tough with bargaining as well.  I see why you admire her so.”  Tannia approached her closer to view the screen.

Seven arched her brow and turned to face Liaison.  “The Jetta projections have been scheduled for its completion.  The assimilations will take place in Holodeck one, as previously discussed.”

Seven handed Liaison Tannia the padd, then resumed working.  “Liaison Tannia, I do not recall my mentioning… admiration for Captain Janeway in our conversations.”

“Seven please, Tannia is sufficient.  I had only concluded your admiration based on our conversations.  You speak so highly of your Captain.  It is important that we have a certain level of trust and confidence in the leaders we choose to follow.”

“Indeed.  I was unaware that my conversations were so revealing.  Excuse my questioning your keen perceptions, if I have offended you in any way.“  Seven said slowly.  She paused before going on,  “It is rather refreshing to met someone who is as straight forward as your species.  As a Borg I find humans to be inefficient and abstract in their means of communication.”  Seven smiled lightly as she finally finished tapping commands in the console.

Seven faced Tannia and waited for her response.

Thank you Seven.  I will not hesitate to take that as a compliment.  Tannia smiled back at her and took a step towards her.

“To be perfectly honest, I cannot help but admire your beauty and intelligence.  And, well, I was hoping you would consider accompanying me as my companion, when you are off duty, of course.  Perhaps, if you are interested, I could show you some beautiful places on my planet?”  Tannia’s voice dropped to a more intimate tone.  “That is if you are unattached?”  Their bodies were extremely close.

Seven, taken completely by surprised, noticed her heart rate had increased the current of electricity traveling throughout her body almost shook her composure.  Unexpectedly, she realized she was attracted to Tannia.  The feelings were unmistakable, feelings she had only recently learned to identify, but had not yet learned how to control.  “Unattached?”  Seven asked, surprised both by the request and by the slight unsteadiness of her voice.

“I spoke with Captain Janeway and she told me that you were recently searching for, are interested in, well, you’re pursuing the possibility of a suitable mate.”  Tannia said

Seven was a taken aback at the mention of Janeway’s name, but, more so by the mention of a conversation involving her personal status.  Seven was unsure why that bothered her so – whether it was the topic of conversation,  the mere fact that the Captain thought her unattached or that she was seeking a mate aboard Voyager.  Her only outward reaction was an arch of her eyebrow.

“Tannia, you want to pursue a romantic relationship with me “

“Yes, I would like us to pursue a romantic relationship.  It is entirely up to you Seven.”  Tannia bit her lower lip as she responded.

Seven said “My date with Lt. Chapman did no go well, after which I found the availability of a suitable mate aboard Voyager…. lacking.  And you are certain you are interested in  .”

“Yes Seven, I would love to spend time with you.  To get to know you better.  We work together and spend time together in our current capacities, yet I believe you and I could have so much more in the way of friendship, companionship.  I believe we seem to enjoy each others company.”

“Indeed.  I require more thought to your request.  I will have an answer for you regarding this matter shortly.”   Seven looked at Tannia wondering why anyone would want to get to know her better.  Deep down the Borg realized she was receptive to the idea.  Flattered, perhaps?  However, also she was also uncertain that it would work out successfully.

“Of course, Seven.  That will be fine.  There is this small tavern on the out skirts of the city.  It has the best entertainment.  I thought that might be a good place to start, say 1730 hours tomorrow,  you might give me your answer then perhaps?”  Tannia pressed on.

Seven considered the request.  “That will be acceptable.”

Tannia smiled, pleased with Seven’s answer.  “Thank you, Seven see you then.”  And turned to leave Astrometrics knowing Seven was looking at her.

Seven realized that her head was swimming a bit, as the doors swished opened and walked into the corridor to the turbo lift.  Her thoughts were racing and She admitted that the idea of pursuing a date with Tannia intrigued her, yet she had never thought about a mate within the female population.  She concluded that she had perhaps assessed incorrectly the choice of mates among Voyager.  She decided that she should conduct further research into same-sex pairings.

As for Tannia, she was not entirely to sure about how to proceed and hoped to speak to one of her closer friends aboard Voyager.  Since most of Voyager’s crew was preparing to go on shore leave, she doubted their would be adequate opportunity to spend more time with Tuvok, Paris, Harry or B’Elanna.  It seems that exploring a friendship with Tannia may seem plausible.  She had orginially planned to remain aboard Voyager, and continue to work on the Jetta project, which was already ahead of schedule.  Perhaps this might be a good opportunity to encounter new experiences.

The lights in Sick bay’s were dim and most comm-stations were shut down due to shore leaves among the crew and ongoing repairs to various areas of Voyager.

There was complete silence except for the cheerful humming of the Doctor, a Medical Emergency Hologram, and recently recognized sentient being.  The Doctor was preparing the last of his duties in the medical lab before leaving for the planet below.

“Doctor.”  The Doctor turned to the direction of Seven’s voice.

“Hello Seven.”

“I require your assistance.  May I see you now.”  Concerned, The Doctor replied, “Is there a medical emergency?”

“It is not a  medical emergency.  I need to speak with you about a personal matter.”  Seven said

“A personal matter?  What about Seven?” The Doctor suddenly curious.

“I was asked on a date and I must decide on my response.  You said that if I ever needed your assistance on this matter I could come to you.

“That was before the Captain had my head on a platter about the last time Seven ventured into the dating scene.  The Captain was extremely upset about the bet I made with Paris.  She accused me of being insensitive and cruel to Seven's needs and I was instructed to not interfere with her future entanglements.”  The Doctor thought to himself, while trying to find a way out of this discussion with Seven.

“You caught me as I was about to leave to the surface.  I am sure this can wait until I return.  I really have to go.  Perhaps you can speak to the Captain about this recent development Seven.  I am sure she would be glad to help you.  I have to go now.”  The Doctor quickly dodging her request, “Oh, and Seven, …"  The doctor continued as he was walking out the door.

“Yes.” Seven said with a slight disappointed in her voice.

He stopped and turned to Seven.  “I’m sure you will do just fine.  Feel free to review our lessons from our previous discussions. Congratulations and Good Luck.”  The Doctor leaves and the doors close behind him.

The Captain extremely tired from the negotiations with the heads of state, entered her quarters, dimmed the lights, programmed some soft music and replicated a bottle of scotch.  She poured a glass and took her first shot, her face grimacing as it went down.  Janeway both wanted and needed to relax - she kicked off her shoes and began to undress in her bedroom.  She was about to run the water in the tub when she her door chimed.

She thought about the entire ship on shore leave and looked at the portal. "Who could possibly need me now?"

“Come.”

The captain was not in the mood for company.  She wasn’t in the mood for anything since her shuttle trip to the surface this morning.  She was worried and upset about Tannia’s interest in Seven.  But why was that?  She should be happy for Seven, but instead she was disturbed.  Worse, she knew exactly why.  She always had been able to dismiss her innermost feelings about Seven because of Starfleet protocols.  Always looked at Seven as an innocent.  Somehow, the Captain was satisfied with the time she and Seven spent together, and the relationship they had forged.  The bond she had developed over time was precious to her, but now that bond felt threatened with Tannia in the picture.  “How did this happen?  How could I let it get this far?  My feelings are completely out of line.”  Janeway thought.

Seven stepped into the Captain’s quarters.  “Hello Captain.  I hope that I am not disturbing you.  But I require your assistance.”

Janeway thought she would cry right there.  Her heart ached and she needed to sit down on the sofa.  “Hello Seven, what brings you here?”

Seven stood behind the sofa, somehow sensing that Kathryn needed her space now.  “It is something of a personal nature.  If it is not a good time, I will leave.  You do not look well Captain.  Shall I call the doctor?”

Janeway put on her command mask, and mustered all the strength in her body to be there for Seven .  “But who will be there for me.”  She stands and offers Seven a seat next to her.  “Please sit.  I am just exhausted from meeting with the V’ordack leaders, nothing more, and nothing some rest won’t cure.  What can I do for you?”  Suddenly very interested.

“I was asked on a date by Liaison Tannia.  I am not sure how to proceed.”  Seven revealed.  “Dating is new to me and my last encounter was disastrous.  I am concerned that due to my inexperience failure will repeat itself.  I was hoping to discuss this with The Doctor but he was unavailable.  Perhaps you may have some advice on the matter?”

Janeway listened, although she was a million light years away.  “Yes, I am aware that Liaison Tannia has expressed interest in you.  I am not surprised and frankly she has excellent taste in choosing a companion.”  She pauses.  “It would be unfair to you to base one experience on any future or potential romantic opportunities that may present itself.  Perhaps you should seriously consider your needs in a mate, attraction, compatibility and other interests before making any decisions.  I agree you are inexperienced, but maybe you can look at this as an opportunity to tread uncharted waters, so to speak.”

“Tread uncharted water?”  Seven arched her brow, not understanding.

“It means to try it out.” Janeway clarified.

“So I should try this date out with Tannia?”  Seven said.

“You must make that determination Seven.  I am only presenting your options on how you could or why you would proceed.”  Janeway added.

“My options.  And for that matter, others options do I have, if Liaison Tannia has been the only one to ask.  Seven looks at Janeway.

“She has a point Katie.  What are you going to do about it.”  Janeway thinks.

“Weigh the pros and cons of getting into a relationship Seven.  Examine the reasons and most of all ask yourself what type of relationship are you looking for.  I was referring to those options.”  Janeway said

“Interesting, I had not considered those, options.  Thank you Captain for your time.”  Seven turns to leave.

Have you given any thought as to what your answer will be?  Janeway asked conflicted as to whether she really wanted to know..

“Yes Captain.  I believe it would only be correct that I disclose my decision to Tannia first before telling anyone else.  I have conducted research on same-sex pairings and I believe I limited my options as to a compatible mate on Voyager.  In hindsight, I intend to carefully examine all possibilities in the future.  Good night.”  Seven walks to the door.

“Seven.”

“Yes Captain.”

“Whatever you choice is, just be careful; I always find it wise to take things slowly, so you can get to know the person better.”  I guess that that is all I can give in the way of advise Seven.  Ultimately, the decision is yours alone to make.”  Janeway said seriously in a low voice, “Good night and Good luck.”

“Good night Captain.”  The door closed behind Seven.

Seven never felt so confused in her life.  She wondered why it could not be the Captain who had asked her, then the answer would have been so easy.

Janeway suddenly felt sick to her stomach.  She put her hands on her face.  Deep in her heart, she new Seven would pursue the opportunity with Tannia.  Nevertheless, what could she do but be impartial to Seven’s needs.  Janeway went to bed early, but sleep eluded her.  Somehow, she was not so tired any longer.

Chakotay was in the Captain’s ready room reviewing the final shore leave for the crew when Janeway stormed in and abruptly stop short when she notices her first officer.  She mumbled something to him and took a sip of her morning coffee.

Standing up, he left his seat and waited to see what Janeway wanted to do.  He couldn’t remember the last time he had seen her so annoyed and irritated.  He proceeded with caution, “Captain I was about to issue the remaining list of shore leave to the crew today.”

“I don’t know about that.”  I know that are Cargo bays are filled to capacity.  How are the repairs coming along, if we are not on schedule, then maybe we should consider being ahead so we can move on a soon as possible.”

“Oh.  Why the sudden change, Captain.”

Suddenly Janeway realized her crew had been looking forward to the shore leave and all has gone well on the surface to merit one.  Her wishes are ill conceived, regardless of her feelings or motives.  The last thing she wanted to do was disappoint her crew.  “No reason.  Proceed.”  Quickly she added, “You’re dismissed.”

Chakotay walked to leave, the doors opening as he proceeded.

She did not want to speak with Chakotay or anyone while in her foul mood.  Maybe she should have a night out on the surface for a change, she could use some distraction.

“Chakotay.”

“Yes Captain.”

“What are you doing later on this evening, I could use the company.”  Then she smiled, “I promise, I wont be such a crab.”

They both laughed as they exited the ready room and the doors closed behind them.

Tuvok who was on the bridge, gave a curious look to both Chakotay and Janeway before resuming his work at the comm.

Many of Voyager’s crew were at the tavern, having fun during their shore leave.  The tavern was the center of excitement and entertainment, overcrowded with voices speaking over the fluted and percussion music playing above their heads, the air’s aroma filled with scents of smoke and sweetened meat.  The lighting was incandescent, small torchlight's lined the walls of the club making the shadows on the walls dance.  Small tables were off to the back, larger tables off to the sides for larger groups.  The Bar was immediately along the front right, and a staircase next to it.

Tannia was sitting at a small table debating whether Seven was going to show.  Seven is hard to read and Tannia always appreciated a challenged and Seven was definitely difficult to figure out.  She immediately took a liken to Seven, never had she felt like this about anyone before and hoped that her eagerness had not scared her off.  Tannia has never experience rejection or ever had trouble with companionships.  Although her confidence was not at its usual peak when it came to Seven.  She was different and told her self Seven is an extremely unique and special person.  If only I had some knowledge of how Seven felt about her and what to expect, but dating and relationships are new to her.  Too much pressure for a blossoming relationship she admitted means more than she cared to admit.

Many of Voyager’s crew had recognized Tannia sitting alone and had briefly greeted her as they passed by.  B’Elanna noticed Tom’s attention directed towards Tannia, but said nothing for now.  She knew that she would take care of him later and didn’t want his insensitivity to ruin her good mood and her fun time.

1729 hours Seven stood at the doorway silently observing the occupants at the Hub.  She noticed many Starfleet uniforms almost out numbered the natives.  Quickly she located Tannia who was sitting facing the door and exchanged smiles when their eyes meet.  Seven nodded to familiar crewmembers as she walked over to Tannia’s table, the best view in the Hub.

She noticed peculiar looks and paid no mind to them.  Seven took great care in the attire she choose, a midnight-blue dress, sleeveless with a simple round cut collar, blue pumps, topped off with a chiffon flowered scarf wrapped loosely at her neck, falling along her long arms.  Her hair was loose and pinned back with a simple sliver pin, and light make-up.  In her hand was a small wrapped package, barely visible to the eye.

Tannia stood up and held her hand out to Seven’s directing her to sit across from her.  “Seven, you look stunningly beautiful.  I am so pleased you decided to come, I wasn’t sure if you were going to show”.

Seven was nervous.  Her stomach was turning into knots as she tried not to think about her lack of experience regarding dates, then she remembered that this was not officially a date and began to relax somewhat.  “Thank you, you look, atheistically pleasing as well.  Why are you surprised of my arrival?  I thought we had agreed to meet here at 1730 hours.”

“My, you are punctually, as well as correct.  It was silly of me to worry if you would not show.”  Tannia admitted, smiling at Seven and looking at her from top to bottom.

“It is quite all right.  I understand anticipation has much to do with the nature of dating.  I have done much research into same-sex pairings and am quite versed in mating practices of many species, although actual experience is, as it has been explained, much different and difficult than just acquiring knowledge.”

Tannia listened with fascination and adoration.  “Would you like a drink.”  She offered Seven, as her voice filled with quiet laughter.

“Yes, Thank you.”  Seven said, what do you recommend.

“Ah, do you are know that we are known for our wide selection of drinks.”  Tannia snaps her hand and the owner swiftly responded.

Tannia was aware of the change in Seven’s demeanor as they began to talk about everything she had experience aboard Voyager since being served from the collective.  Seven was more relaxed and surprisingly witty.  Tannia didn’t know how slow she could take this, after all Seven is an incredible woman.

As the evening progressed, Seven increasingly grew to like Tannia’s company.  Seven appreciated Tannia’s qualities that she felt were important for a mate to possess.  Tannia in many ways, reminded her of Janeway.  For a second Seven’s smile faded as she wondered what the Captain was engaged in at the moment and loss track of the conversation for a few seconds.  Suddenly she heard a deep laughter, which sounded very much like one she has heard many times before.  Tannia’s voice penetrated into Seven’s thoughts.  “…must be boring you with small talk.  “Seven would you like to dance again or maybe we can take a walk, the three moons are amazing this time of night.  Its never quite dark.”  Tannia asked.

“I believe you are teasing me.  I am not a good dancer.  However, I could use some quiet and fresh air.  Seven replied.

Both women stood up, Tannia walking close to Seven in the crowded Tavern, her hand on Seven’s lower back, guiding her to the door.  Then Seven heard the laugh again, turned into its direction to see Chakotay, but could not quite make out the woman he was with.  She thought for a second who she was.

All evening both woman were oblivious of a hooded covered individual at the rear of the tavern, who watched them, now following them as they exited the tavern.

Captain Janeway tossed and turned in her bed.  An hour went by when she finally gave up.  “Computer Lights.”  She climbed out of bed and walked over to her work console hoping she could at least get some work done.  Her mind was racing and a part of her she never even knew existed kept creeping up at her.  Her thoughts and imagination kept getting the better of her as she tried desperately to stop her mind from thinking.  She shut her eyes, put her hands to her head, then walked over to the replicator, ordered coffee, black.

Chakotay and her had decided to go to the Tavern everyone was talking about.  This night was the first night that the majority of her crew was on shore leave.  She entered the tavern and Chakotay immediately pulled out a chair for Janeway at a nearby table along the wall, between the bar and the entrance.  Shortly after, he had left to order some drinks and food.

Janeway was absorbing the sights and scents of the tavern.  She notices the décor, dimly light ambience and decided it was a wise choice to go out and get some air.  Chakotay was considerably charming tonight and her spirits pick up somewhat.  As she observed further, among the sea of Starfleet uniforms, her heart sank to the pit of her stomach.  Seven was on the dance floor taken by what appeared to be a conga line.  Tannia’s was close behind her, her hands on Seven’s lower hips, guiding her off to their table.  Seven looked radiant in that blue dress, her smile brilliant, revealing a prefect set of white teeth.  Her hair was down, brushing the top of her neck.

Suddenly she wanted to flee, just as Chakotay came back with their drinks.

“Is everything alright?  You look a little green, Kathryn.”

Captain Janeway put on her best command mask.  Took a deep breath and replied.  “I am Fine.  You caught me thinking about work.  I guess it been to long since I have let my hair down and don’t know when to stop worrying.  She smiled, picked up her drink and took a long gulp.

Chakotay smiled, shaking his head “Well promise me that you will stop worrying.  The ship is fine, all is going well and we have much to be thankful for.  You are entitled to let loose Kathryn.  Enjoy yourself.”  He said

“Mmmm. Is that an order.” she teased and decided she needed to play along.  She could not be upset about seeing Seven and her date.  The last thing she wanted to be was obvious to Chakotay or her crew present tonight.

The night was long, dragging on.  She and Chakotay nodded to crew members who happen to notice them.

Finally, that conga line had set a course directly for them and they were urged on to join.  Janeway and Chakotay reluctantly joined the line as it made its way throughout the tavern.

“That was fun.” She told her handsome first officer as he pulled out the chair.  Her head turned to the table which Tannia sat, while  Seven’s back was facing them. Kathryn frowned.

If Chakotay knew she was staring a bit at Seven and her date, he said nothing.  “Kathryn it’s late, would you like to head back now?”  He said

“Not at all.  I could go for another one of those drinks.”  She stammered slightly as the drinks she consumed started to take it toll in her system.  “The night is still young.” She said loudly, she received strange looks as she waved her hand in the air.  “One for the road.”

Kathryn Janeway was smiling but her eyes said something different.

After that, Chakotay had escorted her back to her quarters.  He really was more concerned that she had a little to much to drink and felt better knowing she was safely in bed.

The next morning, Janeway remembered nothing much, except Chakotay putting her to bed in her quarters.

She called the doctor to give her a hypo-spray to counteract her symptoms.  He gave her the spray, but not without his needling about alcohol indulgence.

The other memory she recalled about last night was of Seven with Liaison Tannia.  How could she be upset?  How could she be resentful of Tannia.  The fact is she likes Tannia as a person.  Seven deserves to be happy.  “What reason did you every give Seven for not looking elsewhere.  You knew that it would eventually happen.  Seven has matured and her hormones along with it.  She practically begged you to give her an option and you didn’t bite, Katie.”  What are you going to do about it?  Face it; you probably lost your shot.  What I am I thinking, I can’t get involved with a member of my crew.”

Captain Janeway got dressed trying not to think about how Seven’s date ended.

Seven returned to Voyager rather late.  Tannia insisted she walk Seven back to cargo bay two.

“I had a wonderful time Seven.  You were the perfect companion.”  Tannia said sweetly.

I also had a pleasant experience.  I enjoyed your company as well.”  Seven replied choosing her words carefully.

“I am so delighted that you came tonight.  I would like to see more of you, Seven.”  Tannia said more seductively.

Nervously, Seven placed her hands at her back and straighten.  The awkward silence finally penetrated by Tannia’s whispered words.

“Seven, May I kiss you goodnight.”

Seven stood still, saying nothing as Tannia slowly closed the distance between them.  Tannia stayed there for what seemed an eternity.  Tannia’s hands gently caressed Seven’s hair, passing her fingers through it.  Seven swallowed.  Tannia inched her face forward to Seven’s, as she softly brushed her faced on her cheek.  Seven felt Tannia’s eyelashes touched her check and soft nosed and then kissed her lightly on her other cheek.

When Tannia broke away, she looked at Seven who had her eyes closed.  Seven slowly opened her eyes and their eyes met; Tannia’s green-gray eyes said everything, but did nothing.  Seven put her hand to her cheek, touched Tannia’s lips, looked down and turned away.

Tannia smiled as she grabbed and squeezed Seven’s hand and let it loose.  “Goodnight Seven.

“Goodnight Tannia.”

The doors closed.  Seven’s body radiated heat and such a longing to be touched.  She cried out.  Nooo!

She needed to speak to someone, but who?  She exited the cargo bay and headed for the turbo lift.  She turned the corridor, slowed to a stop when she heard the swoosh of the captain’s quarters doors open.  Standing with his back to the entrance, Commander Chakotay was holding the Captain who had her arm around his neck.

Seven could not place her feelings for reacting to what she had just saw, except that it made her insides ache.  She thought of interrupting, then opted to return to cargo bay two to regenerate for the night.

Days had passed and the weather held up beautifully as if just for the enjoyment of the Voyager crew’s shore leave.

The beach was relatively deserted around this time just before nightfall, but never really getting dark, instead the sky was at a constant dark blue.   The ocean water was choppy, crashing against the large rocks splashing white water about spraying B’Elanna lightly, who had was waiting for Tom to return from Voyager.  She continued walking along the beach shore soaking up the scent and the view of the ocean when she spotted Seven of Nine with Liaison Tannia.  “I guess the rumors about Seven and the Liaison were correct.  Seven is absolutely beaming, but then everyone seems to be extremely happy on V’ordack.  There sure are a lot of pairings among the crew and the V'ordack's lately.  Come to think of it, Tom and I have been like honeymooners.  This place is like paradise; who could help themselves?”

“Seven, I’ll see you later tonight at my place, at the towers.”  Tannia stood still as the wind blew her long strawberry-blonde hair about her face, her skirt twisting viciously, holding her hands to her arms trying to protect them from the cool breeze.  Tannia’s nipples were at attention, her breasts in a small halter-top.  B’Elanna’s mouth gaped open as she saw Seven and Tannia kiss, not at all minding the curly locks getting in their way.  I didn’t realized you had it in you Seven.  Looks like somebody has melted the icy Borg's heart.  I must say you are full of surprises Seven.”  B’Elanna thought to herself.

B’Elanna thought it was strange for Seven to walk when she could have just beamed back aboard.  How inefficient for the Borg. Tom dematerialized behind B’Elanna and followed B’Elanna’s gaze.  “Is that Seven? His eyes squinting and head pushed forward.  Lt Torres jumped and slapped him on the arm.  “Don’t sneak up at me.  You know I don’t like it when you do that."

"Is that Seven?" asked Tom.

“Yes, that’s Seven.  I just have the weirdest thing to tell you.”  B’Elanna added.

After she finished, Tom agreed that that was odd behavior from Seven.  Then Tom shared a few of his own stories about crewmembers.  “You know something else? Harry even went as far as to tell me that he was seriously thinking about staying behind when Voyager left.  He was happy and wanted to start a life here on V’ordack with Mayla.  I know Harry is sometimes quick to fall for women, but then this morning Ensign Wildman said she wanted to saty behind too.  She went on and on about a stable and safe life for her and Naomi with this guy, what’s his name?"  Tom asked.

“Paetron, I think?   He is very handsome and they do make a nice couple." B’Elanna answered.  Then paused, "You know what Tom?  There's quite a few crewmembers seeing V’ordackians.  Many are thinking about staying behind.  How strange?  You don’t think something funny is going on around here do you?"  B’Elanna's voice was laced with concern which could also be seen on her face.

Tom shrugged his shoulders and pressed his mouth down.  “I don't know?"

The chirp on Tom’s badge interrupted their conversation.  “Tuvok to Tom Paris, Lt Torres.”

Tom tapped his badge.  “Paris here Tuvok.”

“Lt Torres here.”  Said B'Elanna.

"Return to Voyager immediately." Said Tuvok in his monotone voice.

“We’re on our way.  Two to beam up, energizer when ready.  Paris out.”

Tannia remembered the first evening she spent with Seven.  Everything went as well as could be expected.  She had been able to avoid Captain Janeway and Chakotay thus far.  Unsure if Seven had feelings for Captain Janeway, but sure that the Captain has feelings for the Borg.  She detected something from Janeway she was not prepared to confront head-on with her just yet.  She was not sure how much longer she could avoid her though.

At last, Tannia was looking forward to spending every available moment with Seven.  The completion of repairs to Voyager meant that soon, she would not have another opportunity to get closer to Seven.  The Jetta project was finished a week ago to everyone’s surprise and amazement.  The improvements it offered were well worth the additional time it required for Voyager’s stay.

Tannia was planning a quiet evening at home with Seven who seemed to be spending more time here with her.  Tonight was to be extra special.  Seven had been very shy about her feelings and about how fast to progress, but told Tannia that she thought she was ready to take a major step in the relationship.

Tannia was acutely aware of the differences in how V’ordackian’s make love, but she has been ready to explore into new territory for some time now.

She was almost ready with food and table preparations.  Seven has increased her food intake slowly, enjoying the new cuisine.  She was mortified at first that Seven did not consume food much at all.  Food was an important part of her culture and V’ordack senses.  She was wearing a thin silk robe, heading to take an oil bath when the door chimed.  She looked at the time at thought Seven was very early.  “Enter” she called out from the bedroom.

“Honey you are very early for dinner, unless you had other things in mi…"  Tannia stopped when she saw that it was Captain Janeway.

“Oh.  Captain Janeway.  What a pleasant surprise.”  Tannia smiled nervously.

“Please stop with the pleasantries.  I had not realized that you were expecting company, so I will be quick.”  Janeway said in a low register.

“Why have you been purposely avoiding me Liaison Tannia?”  I received your electronic messages, but I have requested face-to-face meetings and you have not made yourself available.”  Janeway stared her eyes narrowed.

"I have been very busy.  And I…”

“Please.”  Janeway held her hand up in the air and cut her off.  I know what you have been occupying your time with.  I didn’t come here to argue, I simply came to speak with you face to face.  I deserved an honest answer at least.  Janeway stated.

“Yes.  You do.  Frankly, I have been avoiding you Captain.  I was aware that you had not been completely honest with me in the shuttle that day or perhaps with yourself, regarding your feelings for Seven.  I liked Seven very much then, I wanted to continue to see her, and I knew that I would stop if you had asked me to.  I would have had no choice under the circumstances.  My government does not allow me to attempt to engage with someone who has already bonded.”

“Our bond as you say is only in friendship.”  Janeway said somewhat annoyed that Tannia was right about her feelings for Seven.  At least she got her to admit it to herself.

Regardless, I saw you that night in the tavern and it was very apparent you have strong feelings for her.  I was not entirely too sure about Seven.  I know she went to see you that night and that quite possibly she would not have wanted to continue the relationship, but she did.

Tannia’s words hit Janeway like a ton of bricks.  She had not known Seven had come to see her.  She had too much to drink that night and Chakotay took her to her quarters.  I don’t recall Seven coming to see me.  What if I had not heard her ring or worse she saw Chakotay there I thought something more of it?  Oh God.  Janeway thought to herself.

“I was grateful when she agreed to continue seeing me, but was not as confident she would want to be with me.  Now I am secure of her feelings for me.  I guess I should tell you that I am going to ask Seven to stay with me here on V’ordack.”
