New Discoveries

Part 3

Seven awakened early and rose on her elbows to take a look outside the windows. She found that it was still dark outside, the moons casting a pale light over the village. Kathryn remained asleep and Seven took a few moments to watch her Captain as she slept, noting how relaxed her facial features appeared. There was a lock of hair that had found its way across her nose and Seven gently moved it aside, taking care not to disturb the sleeping form. She watched the gentle rise and fall of Kathryn’s chest and Seven wondered about the sensations that she had begun to feel, a tightness in her chest, an aching in her abdomen. She knew that she would need to see the Doctor as soon as they returned to the ship because these sensations could not possibly be within normal parameters. She had to convince herself to resist the urge to touch Kathryn’s cheek.

"These feelings are irrelevant," she reminded herself.

She cocked her head hearing the movements of someone downstairs so she dressed quickly and quietly leaving Kathryn asleep. As she tiptoed down the stairs, all of her senses remained on full alert. As she drew closer to the kitchen area, she could smell something that even she found delightfully aromatic. Seven realized that it was the odor of bread baking and she was aware of memories stirring from a time long ago. She found Keth bent over the large oven, removing large loaves of bread and other pastries. Seven cleared her throat, announcing her presence.

"Seven, please join me for breakfast. Most everyone else is still asleep since they stayed awake into the early hours playing their music and telling their tales. I would enjoy some time just with you. Your Captain would not mind, I’m sure."

"Indeed?" inquired Seven arching her eyebrows as though this woman before her was suddenly a challenge. Seven was immediately aware that Keth had referred to Kathryn as her Captain and she instantly felt on her guard.

"Come, sit with me and I will explain."

She led Seven into the large kitchen area and placed a mug of something hot in front of her. After retrieving one for herself, she sat across the wide table from Seven and looked directly into her eyes. Keth was searching for the right words to use with this woman sitting quite straight and proper and she immediately had the impression Seven did not trust her. She took a few sips in an attempt to collect her thoughts.

"Your Captain is a fine woman, Seven. I’m certain that you feel such pride being on her ship," Keth began. "Last night Kathryn explained to me about the Prime Directive that you all live by and I, for one, am most pleased that your culture holds it in great esteem. So, I am not trying to press you for details of your lives in space. Quite frankly, I am not that interested. I am content with my life here. And I know about the subterfuge. I must say Kathryn was not a very good liar when she needed to be, but then, I am very good at spotting deception."

"Clarify," demanded Seven of Nine.

"In my conversation with Kathryn last evening, I informed her, I knew you both were not from here. You see, I am able to sense deceptions in others and can sense what others are feeling. Kathryn said she knew of others who were … I believe that she referred to them as empaths," explained Keth.

"She is not a very good spy," admitted Seven.

"No, I suppose not," Keth laughed. "But, neither are you, Seven."

"Is this why you wished to speak with me?" Seven asked.

"No. I want to talk with you about what I see happening between you and she," offered Keth.

"Explain," Stated Seven.

"I am able to perceive impressions from others when strong feelings are emanating from them. And, I have sensed very strong feelings radiating from you and Kathryn ever since I first met you here yesterday afternoon. It is quite obvious to me that you are attracted to Kathryn in much the same way the corax fly is attracted to the hamlier flower. The attraction is quite powerful and nothing seems to stand in the way of the corax fly finding the pollen that it must have."

"What I feel is irrelevant," Seven continued to repeat her mantra.

"Is it? Are you going to sit there and deny that you are attracted to Kathryn?" Keth insisted.

"Because it is not appropriate, therefore, it is irrelevant," Seven insisted.

"You both are being so foolish," Keth said, sadly shaking her head. "I told as much to Kathryn last evening. She is not allowing herself the companionship that she desperately needs and you are not allowing yourself the opportunity to express the feelings you have."

"I do not believe that I should be having this discussion. It is not appropriate." Seven reiterated becoming more uncomfortable as the conversation progressed.

"Seven, I believe that you both have an opportunity before you. What you do with that opportunity is relevant. But, I can sense your discomfort and it saddens me that you cannot take advantage of what is available to both of you."

"It is not possible for the Captain and I to have a relationship," Seven stated flatly.

"Why not?"

"Because she is not male. Therefore, any feelings I may have are not appropriate and are therefore, irrelevant." Seven explained.

"And who told you that two women could not have a relationship?" inquired Keth.

"The Doctor. He has been tutoring me on social relationships. His lesson, number 46, deals with dating the male members of our crew."

"I see. It is taboo in your culture for women to date and possibly care for other women?" Or is that lesson #47? Keth wondered.

"I … have … no … information … about that." Seven found that she was hesitant and it was most disconcerting.

Truthfully, she did not know the answer to Keth’s question. The Doctor had never intimated that she could date women on board Voyager. He had suggested that she look at the crew’s manifest to determine who had similar interests but she had only looked at the male members of the crew. She had never thought to look at the female members and the Doctor had not suggested it either. She wondered if her initial research attempts had been flawed.

"Perhaps you need to explore that possibility then. Perhaps you can ask Kathryn?" suggested Keth.

"I do not know how. She is my Captain. I am her crewmember. She has not been involved with anyone since her fiancé gave her the message that he was involved with someone else," admitted Seven.

"Then perhaps it would be possible. We have a saying here, ‘You cannot lose what you have not sought.’ Perhaps this is what you seek," Keth said gently.

"Perhaps," Seven acknowledged.

At that moment, Kathryn walked into the kitchen and instinctively knew that the two women had been involved in a private conversation. The silence contained the pause of awkwardness and she would have wagered a month’s worth of replicator rations the discussion involved her. She simply sighed as she reached for a hot beverage and although it wasn’t coffee, she hoped that it would give her the boost she needed to start her day. Preparations needed to be made for the next part of their journey and they still had to link up with Harry Kim. Janeway was anxious to find out what he had been able to discover during the night. She assumed her command posture and turned to both women.

"Keth, you have been most hospitable. I think that Seven, Harry and I can handle it from here." Janeway suggested.

"I believe you will still need my assistance, Kathryn. I am ready to travel and can help you find people who can answer your questions better than I," insisted Keth.

"Well then, I would like to get started as soon as possible." Kathryn said.

"Of course. I have already communicated with Garonk and he has a vehicle ready for the four of us. He is with Harry Kim and both will be here shortly. However, you have enough time to have some food. We will not be stopping until we reach Dolamon and that won’t be for a few hours. Please eat something," Keth pleaded.

"Thank you." Kathryn remembered that one rule of any away mission was to never miss an opportunity to eat since doing so could deplete the body’s resources far too quickly. Jeopardizing the mission was definitely not in her plans.

She picked up a slice of bread, spread some fruit conserve on it and munched slowly looking first at Keth and then at Seven. She wondered what they had been discussing but knew better than to ask. She realized that she was hesitant to really know. She had a long day ahead of her and she felt obliged to check in with Chakotay as soon as possible. She asked Keth if there was someplace private where she could communicate with her ship and was led to a small room off the kitchen where sacks resembling flour, sugar, and other stores could be found.

"Janeway to Voyager."

"Captain, we were beginning to get worried. Are you all right," Chakotay asked with a nervous edge in his voice.

"The landing party is fine. How are the reparations to the ship coming along?"

"Almost half of the major systems are back on line, Captain. Our secondary systems are working as backup."

"I want all our primary systems up and operational before we leave orbit. What else?" she asked.

"We have detected an unusual energy reading in a major city approximately 300 kilometers from your present position," reported Chakotay.

"Yes, we're aware of it and are planning to go there this morning. We have learned that an element known as muoline is being mined and that it may have been discovered by another race of humanoids known as the Taborians. They are not native to this world originally and they have been mining it for its use as an energy source, explained Captain Janeway. "I hope to have more news for you after we reach Dolamon, the city where the mining operations are."

"Captain," Tuvok began, "Do you require any assistance?"

"No, Tuvok. Things are well in hand here. I need you to assist with getting all the systems back on line as soon as possible. Hopefully, I will have additional news for you after we reach Dolamon." Janeway replied.

"Very well, Captain. Keep us informed as to your progress. Perhaps you’ll have more news by your next check-in time," Chakotay said, worry outlining his voice.

"Janeway out".

The morning held promises of sunny warmth to chase away the coldness from the previous night. There had been precious little time to confer with Ensign Kim but his report held even less information than what she already knew about this planet and its inhabitants.

Garonk had provided them with suitable transportation, which consisted of a vehicle that bumped its way across the roads making interesting belching noises from time to time. Harry leaned forward at one point and explained to Seven that Tom would probably love to get a look under the hood to see how the engine operated. During the entire trip Keth chatted on about how the guilds had been established and their importance to the social development on her planet. The Taborians had adopted the same system of guilds, borrowed from the Iaconians, and each appeared to co-exist peacefully but separately from the other despite a fair amount of trading for goods and services. There were festivals held at specific times of the year to celebrate the harvest or other major events that had occurred throughout the planet’s history. Keth explained that their trip to Dolamon coincided with the Festival of Gatherings, something that Kathryn thought sounded similar to a autumn festival.

The trip to Dolamon took less time that Janeway thought it might and before long they were entering the city limits. The city appeared harsh against the skyline; many of the structures rose high but they held no aesthetic quality. The sidewalks had throngs of people moving about their daily business, each one intent upon his or her own destination. But, it was almost as though the city and its people appeared gray to Kathryn. She had visited many cities in her career in Starfleet; perhaps the most beautiful ones had been the ones that had been terraformed out of uninhabitable planets such as Mars and Thelka IV. She thought that this one could use some transformation.

Keth knew where she wanted to go and prior to leaving her village had already contacted people living in the city that could assist Voyager’s away team. They parked the vehicle on a side street. The air smelled more acrid here in the city. Janeway figured it was because of the mining operations and commented to Keth about the odor. Keth agreed that while she enjoyed the opportunities for trade and reacquainting herself with old friends, she much preferred the serenity of her own village. Ensign Kim wrinkled his nose in distaste and looked at the Captain as if to say ‘I told you the air was not as clean as on Voyager’.

"My friends will be in that café across the street waiting for us. I suggest that Harry Kim wait here with the vehicle until our business is completed," suggested Keth.

"Agreed," Kathryn said.

"Shall I wait with Mr. Kim, Captain." Seven of Nine inquired.

"No, I want you with me. Harry, keep a sharp eye and signal me only if it becomes necessary." Janeway replied.

"Yes, ma’am," replied Ensign Kim.

The three women crossed the street and entered the café. Because the interior was much darker, it took a moment for Kathryn’s eyes to adjust to the dimness, but once she did, she discovered that the café wasn’t much different from one that might have been on Earth. There was a bar along the opposite wall where a man was tending to some customers. She could smell an interesting though not unpleasant aroma which, she presumed, came from a kitchen area next to the bar since there were women coming and going through a doorway. Each carried several mugs of a frothy beverage and an assortment of food on trays balanced precariously on their shoulders. There was a smattering of people sitting at tables and booths and Keth led the way between the tables to a booth in the back corner of the establishment where a man and woman sat. Each had a beverage and something like a pastry on the table in front of them. Both individuals had similar facial structures as the women Kathryn had eaten supper with the night before. The man spoke first.

"Keth, it has been many seasons since we last visited. It is good to see you." He spoke softly yet, Janeway had the sense that this man was used to being in charge.

"And may the winds find you well and with good fortune. Larick, I bring a new friend. This is Kathryn who comes from beyond the Soborian Mountains. She has need of your assistance and she can be trusted. You know me and you know that my word is the truth."

Keth had agreed with Janeway that no one else need know who she really was and from where her away team came. Kathryn had planned to return to Voyager today just as soon as they were able to gather the information they needed. She coached Kathryn and the rest of the team regarding information that they might need to have in case anyone began conversing with them and Kathryn felt better prepared because of Keth’s efforts.

"It is good of you to meet with me. I am in need of your help," Kathryn began. "I understand that muoline is being mined here, but I am not very familiar with this element. I have heard that it has terrible side effects that cause extreme weakness and even death in some instances. I am willing to work with you to see if we can discover a way to stop any needless illnesses. But, I need to know as much information about this substance as you can give me."

"Kathryn, I am Kyra and one of my brothers perished in the mines because of the effects of the muoline." The slightly built woman leaned forward and fixed her eyes upon Janeway. She had the same series of ridges across her forehead that reminded Kathryn of the people she had seen in Keth’s village. Her raven black hair hung loosely across her shoulders and each time she turned her head, it seemed to shimmer with iridescence.

Seven stood slightly behind and to the side of Janeway, hands linked behind her back as was her customary stance, and managed to notice the woman’s demeanor. However, there was something about her that Seven instantly disliked. Although she was at a loss to identify anything that would be worth mentioning, she chose instead to remain quiet and listen.

"What were his symptoms?" inquired Kathryn.

"My brother became very weak and yet, no member from our healer guild could find anything wrong with him. He continued to lose strength until he died. The element must be very strong; it has the capacity to help our people get off this world and visit other worlds, but at what price?" Kyra explained.

"Would it be possible for me to obtain a sample of this muoline?" asked Kathryn.

All three looked at each other before turning back to Kathryn. She sensed that something was troubling them for it showed on their faces. She had asked them for something, which would be difficult to grant. Kathryn hoped that she hadn’t rushed headlong into asking for something that would only scare these people away and she would have to search elsewhere.

"It is closely guarded Kathryn. Crews working in the mines are searched whether they are going in or out of the area. It is as though this element is so precious that the masters of the mining guild are afraid that others may steal it for themselves. We have all seen the effects of this muoline and many of us are afraid of what will happen when our people finally do leave this world," Larick replied.

Kyra continued to openly stare at Janeway whereby Seven leaned slightly forward in an effort to assume a more protective posture. She could not identify any concrete evidence to support her unease, but the feelings continued to escalate. There was something about Kyra; something that Seven described to herself as untrustworthy, suspicious. However, since she had nothing more than impressions, sharing them with Kathryn at this point in time was premature. However, she resolved to herself that she would keep an eye on this woman.

"Why is that?" Kathryn asked.

"Because," Larick interjected, "we will be taking with us the very element that may destroy us. We don’t know enough about what this ore is doing to our genetic characteristics. We may be unnecessarily exposing future generations of Taborians to the ill effects of this compound that may be our final destruction. But, that does not stop the mining because it’s so lucrative for the guild masters. They tell us that there is nothing to be concerned with and yet, there are some of us who know differently. I know of one friend who lost his life in an attempt that failed. He was trying to smuggle out a small amount to be analyzed outside of Dolamon."

"I might be able to analyze it and determine in what way it is harmful and perhaps, be able to neutralize its effects, rendering it harmless," Janeway pointed out.

"How could you do that? Are you a healer, Kathryn?" asked Larick.

"No, but I am very concerned about what is happening to the people here in Dolamon because if it is causing people to become sick and die, then it is a threat to the entire planet. Analysis of the substance may show an etiology of the symptoms and then we can begin to find a way to neutralize its effects."

"We have not heard of the muoline causing damage to anyone outside of the mines or of Dolamon. You may be correct, though, that we are looking at a serious problem affecting more than just those of us living and working here. We might be able to smuggle a very small sample out of the mines later this afternoon or tomorrow even. I can contact someone who is working the afternoon shift and he can work on getting a small amount out undetected," offered Larick.

"We must be very careful, Larick," Kyra said, "You know that the officers of the security guild are everywhere. They have sufficient surveillance equipment and I don’t relish the thought of your contact or you being arrested."

He turned to Kathryn and said, "I imagine that it is much different for you Iaconians who live in the mountains."

"Yes, it is," Kathryn responded simply feeling the agony in his statement.

"It’s the greed of mining that has made my people become so paranoid," Larick said sadly. "We never used to live this way but once we found the muoline, everything changed. Now my people are trying to get into space because our historical guild keepers tell us that it is time for us to find our way home. Several of my friends believe that this is our home and we’re not in favor of leaving but rather working together with the Iaconians to develop this world and make use of our talents here. But those in the magistrate guild are pushing our scientists to develop this ore as a potential source of energy to get us into space," he said, waving his hand in the direction of the sky. "And they will stop at nothing which is why we must be careful," he said sighing as he leaned his head against the back of the booth. "So, you are here for the last of the festival?"

"Yes, Larick. And we will stay here for as long as it takes. This is something that is important to both our peoples. Perhaps we should meet here again around dinner time?" asked Keth who had been listening to the exchange. She had been watching Larick and Kyra very carefully, aware of a growing feeling of uncertainty.

"Yes. If we are successful and able to meet, you will find Kyra sitting at the table by the entrance to this café. If we are unsuccessful, no one you know will be sitting there and you can simply leave. I have no idea how long it will take to obtain a sample so you need to be patient," Larick explained. "You must understand that we are risking much to bring this to you. Take care to guard it, Kathryn."

"I shall. And I thank you both for your efforts. You have been most helpful. We will make ourselves available each day at this time with the hopes that you succeed in your efforts. I don’t know that I can repay you," Kathryn offered.

"Find a way to render this terrible thing useless. We can find alternative sources of energy to boost ourselves into the sky," Kyra admitted.

Once outside Keth explained to her three companions that she has several errands to perform. While she was in Dolamon she planned to do some bartering for some items that could not be obtained in Porum, her own village. Ensign Kim asked if he could accompany Keth to which the Captain readily agreed. Keth explained the system of bartering that was expected and gave Kathryn and Seven some small hand-made items and coins that could be used in exchange should they find something worthwhile. That left Kathryn and Seven on their own for the remainder of the day. They agreed to rendezvous at the café at an appointed time. Seven waited for the Captain to finish giving Mr. Kim any last minute instructions before joining her on the sidewalk.

"All right, out with it. Something was bothering you the entire time we were in that café, Seven. What is it?" Kathryn inquired.

"I do not trust Kyra. I have no evidence to support my position but I do not believe that she is trustworthy."

"Don’t you think Keth would have mentioned something to us?"

"I do not know. If what she says is true she should have been able to recognize any deception on the part of Kyra. The fact that she did not is unsettling."

"Agreed. I am also concerned that these people seem to be living in such a state of fear from authorities that may not allow any information to be disseminated about this substance, let alone the success of obtaining a sample. And, I don’t like the odds at this point. I think it’s time we get some additional assistance."

"Agreed."

Seven accompanied the Captain to an alleyway between two buildings where she could shield her from any passerby. Kathryn proceeded to contact the ship asking for Ensign Alejandro and two members of Tuvok’s security team to beam down after first reviewing the data that Seven was uploading to the ship’s computer. It was important that all three individuals blend in with the general population and utilizing the Doctor’s surgical skills to alter facial features was essential. The situation demanded that they be able to pass as Taborians if Janeway’s plan was to succeed. Tuvok insisted that he be included with the second team but Janeway declined explaining that as far as she could tell, there were no dark skinned individuals on this planet. Janeway and Tuvok discussed a strategy that she hoped would ferret out more information and they established a second contact time and place where she and Seven would meet them.

"Well, Seven, what shall we explore first?"

"I do not have sufficient information to formulate an opinion about that Captain," Seven replied.

"Well, I do … I want us to find a spot where we can sit down and talk to each other. You have reverted to referring to me as Captain again. I know that you are bothered by something and as your Captain, that concerns me. Come sit with me."

Janeway moved off in the general direction of where she had seen some benches before they had entered the café. Seven noted that Janeway had adopted her command posture and attitude. It was Seven’s duty to follow and although she might be able to predict the topic of conversation, she could not predict where the conversation might lead. Seven was uncomfortable and her face showed every indication of that discomfort. Janeway sat down on a bench, turning sideways so that she could look at Seven squarely. Seven followed suit.

Kathryn began softly, not wanting to be overheard by anyone.

"Seven, it would seem that you have been uncomfortable in my presence ever since we landed on this planet. You have alternated between referring to me as Captain and Kathryn despite my preference for the latter. I have asked that you relax a little more and I know that is difficult for you to do. But something is bothering you. Can you tell me?"

"I cannot explain at this time, Kathryn." Seven said emphasizing Janeway’s first name.

"Have I said or done something to offend you?"

"No," Seven said quietly looking away.

Kathryn laid her hand on Seven’s shoulder and lightly squeezed. The feel of that touch sent such a wave of electricity through Seven that she almost had to pull away from the sensation. She used all of her Borg willpower to remain quite still and returned Kathryn’s look. The beauty she found in those eyes, noting that the blue intensified under closer scrutiny, made her heart melt.

"Even now I sense that you are uncomfortable with me and this is not like you, Seven. We have always been able to talk to each other. It makes me wonder if this has anything to do with your conversation with Keth this morning?"

After receiving no response, Kathryn placed her hand upon Seven’s arm, aware that Seven did not try to withdraw from her. She began to absently stroke her arm with her thumb while maintaining absolute eye contact, realizing that this was a daring gesture yet, needing to convey her concern for Seven’s demeanor.

"What did she tell you?" Seven asked quickly.

"Keth told me nothing of your conversation."

There was a long pause where neither of them said anything. Kathryn continued to light stroke Seven’s arm, offering the attitude of showing patience. She knew Seven would eventually confide in her, but forcing her would only damage her trust and friendship she had worked so long and hard to build.

"She spoke to me of things that I need to consider. It would seem I do not have all the information I require," Seven said slowly.

Janeway laughed. "She did the same to me too. Want to compare notes?" Janeway realized she had been holding her breath. She knew the consequences of sharing the conversation she had had with Keth would be irreversible.

Seven appeared perplexed. Janeway laughed again and Seven was transformed by the sound of her laughter that was deep and rich, resonating through her. Seven could feel its vibration and was stuck again by how this woman affected her.

"I do not understand."

"Compare notes is a human idiomatic expression meaning you tell me what she said to you and I’ll tell you what she said to me."

"That would be acceptable. However, I am still formulating my own opinions but would enjoy the opportunity to discuss this with you later."

"Agreed. But, Seven, I do want us to talk at length before we return to the ship. I think that this away mission has given us both something to think about. In the meantime, let’s do some exploring on our own then. I want to check out the local merchants and see what they have to offer. I’m in the mood for some serious bartering and thanks to Keth, we have the tools to use. I’m in the mood to ‘shop’, Seven." Kathryn laughed.

"Indeed" was all that Seven could respond for suddenly Janeway’s comm badge chirped its notification signal; there was no need to acknowledge the signal. Janeway stood and with Seven in tow, headed for the same alleyway that made a suitable beam down point. They had only ventured a few meters when Seven suddenly stopped and stiffened.

"What is it?" Janeway asked.

"Kyra, the woman from the café, is on the other side of the street pretending to be looking in the front window of that establishment, but I believe that she is following us."

"Then let’s give her something which will distract her. I want you to walk in her general direction, as though you have seen her and intend to ask her a question. I will head towards the same alleyway in order to contact the ship. Since she cannot possibly follow both of us, I would imagine that if she is being underhanded, she will do her best to dodge any meeting with you. If she tries to follow me, which I don’t think she will, you can keep an eye on her. In that event, I will pass the alleyway and we’ll try some place else."

"Understood."

Seven turned and headed across the street and it was as Kathryn had predicted. Kyra headed towards the front door of the shop and disappeared inside. Seven walked in the general direction of the shop, stood in its doorway as though trying to decide something before moving past the doorway. Further down the street she was able to glance back as though checking for traffic before crossing the street. She noted with satisfaction that Kyra was nowhere to be seen but she remained alert for the woman. She turned the corner meeting up with Janeway who quickly ducked into the alleyway. Kathryn proceeded to contact Voyager.

The shimmer of rearranged molecules finally coalesced into the figures of Ensign Alejandro from Engineering and Crewman McNeil and Ensign Davis, both from Security. She noted with satisfaction that all wore suitable clothing and had facial features consistent with the residents of Dolamon. Alejandro handed her a stasis tube she had requested earlier remarking that B’Elanna had had a few choice words about its modifications.

The Captain quickly briefed them and outlined her plan, which included McNeil and Davis watching the café upon she and Seven’s return to rendezvous with Keth and Harry. She wanted them tailing Kyra to determine her true intent, discovering who she met with and if possible any other information which might prove essential to the success of this mission. Kathryn wanted Alejandro to procure as much information as he could about the muoline ore and the factions that wanted it kept under wraps. She and Seven intended to proceed with the day as had already been planned but would focus on learning more about the Taborians who were not as interested in using the muoline for space travel. For now they would continue to act as the travelers from beyond the Soborians interested only in shopping and the Festival. She gave her team the location of the café and the timing for the next rendezvous.

Seven followed Janeway into one merchant’s shop after another watching how Kathryn dealt with each proprietor as though she was the one in command of each exchange, which Seven supposed that Kathryn was. She watched with admiration as Kathryn bartered her way through several shops leaving its keepers wondering about the woman with the auburn hair. They poked their way through several clothing shops where each shop owner offered to show them both a variety of dresses, coats, footwear, headwear, and more. In each establishment Seven noted that Kathryn looked at each item closely, as though she was seriously considering its purchase, and then shook her head before moving on.

Seven had never seen the Captain conducting herself quite like this before. Kathryn was having a wonderful time despite recent circumstances and Seven could tell that this particular away mission seemed good for her. Janeway was relaxed and smiled at something the woman was saying to her. She caught Seven’s eye and winked at her! Although this was unusual behavior for Captain Janeway, Seven felt warmed by the gesture. She watched as Kathryn finally bartered the woman out of a shawl that had embroidery stitching, wrapped it about her shoulders and looked back at Seven. The shawl captured the highlights of Kathryn’s hair and it looked absolutely stunning next to her complexion. It made Kathryn’s eyes appear brighter, or was that only because she was having such a good time? Seven had begun to notice that when Kathryn really enjoyed herself, her eyes shone a bright shade of blue as they did now. When she was angry or sad, the color in her irises turned a darker, almost stormy shade of gray-blue. It was a signal to whomever Kathryn was dealing with that they should take heed and beware.

"This reminds me so much of something my mother might wear, Seven. I have to have it!"

"Then you must have it." Seven said simply.

"We need to return to the café soon and meet Keth and Harry. But first, I think we need to find something for you, Seven."

"I do not require anything, Kathryn."

"Nonsense. You have very little on board … you have almost no possessions at all, Seven. I noticed you looking at that box over there on the shelf. It is beautiful. Please, let me get that for you."

"It is not necessary, Kathryn."

"It is for me. Please, Seven. It’s a beautiful box and I want to get it for you."

Seven had noticed the item while Kathryn had been occupied and what caught her eye were the unusual carvings on the box and the discovery that it was a puzzle box. The box held several other boxes within that opened in unusual ways and the item intrigued Seven. She had never seen anything quite like it and despite the fact that she had no difficulty discovering the correct method of reassembling the boxes, she enjoyed the feel of the wood and the carvings adorning it. Each carving seemed to have a feminine quality to it and it appealed to Seven in a way that nothing before had. Seven thought that each carving was in the shape of a woman’s body but the artist had used the grain of the wood to enhance the carving. She rubbed her thumb over the largest figure, noting that she was rubbing over what appeared to be the breasts of a woman’s figure on the wood. She stopped herself immediately and realized that she felt flushed. She almost tossed the box aside but discovered that Kathryn had already begun to barter with the proprietor.

Janeway informed the shopkeeper that she would have the box as well as the shawl and the shopkeeper was only too happy to oblige. Seven felt pleased by the gesture and knew that she would treasure this gift forever. She had a slight smile on her face that caught Kathryn’s attention.

"I believe that you seem happy, Seven".

"I am. Thank you for this gift, Kathryn."

Seven suddenly felt at a loss for words. She wanted to be able to express how much this gesture meant to her but was unexpectedly overwhelmed by a tight feeling in her throat. I am damaged, thought Seven and resolved herself to speak to the Doctor about her symptoms as soon as she returned to Voyager.

They met Keth and Harry only a few meters from the café’s doorway and Keth was again struck by the energy that radiated from these two women. She was impressed by how in sync they appeared, how in rhythm their strides were despite the fact that Kathryn was several inches shorter than Seven. She noticed immediately that both were smiling and seemed to have enjoyed their time together and that warmed Keth. She could feel that these two women belonged together; she knew it as much as she knew her own name. She hoped that by expressing herself so boldly to both women, that she had somehow affected them by giving them the opportunity to share themselves with each other.

Aren’t I the little matchmaker? She thought.

Janeway asked Harry to return to the vehicle and await them there. She casually glanced around the area and noted that McNeil and Davis were leaning against a lamppost pretending to be deep in conversation. She gave them the slightest nod and as they acknowledged the gesture, she indicated to Harry that they had backup. She, Seven and Keth entered the café and much to Janeway’s surprise, saw Kyra sitting at the first table. Kyra indicated to Keth that Larick was at a table near the rear of the café. Larick was seated with another man who had long dark hair streaked with gray and seemed as though he needed the table to support him. Both had their heads down and were deep in conversation when she and Keth approached the table. Seven had chosen to sit with Kyra as a precaution, which would enable Seven to keep close tabs on her.

"Larick," Keth said simply.

"Keth, Kathryn. Please sit down. This is my friend, Ravia." Larick indicated for both women to sit.

"You were successful?" Kathryn asked Larick.

"This is the woman I told you about, Ravia. She plans to take what you have and analyze it."

"How do I know that I can trust you?" inquired Ravia. His watery red eyes searched hers looking for some indication that Kathryn was untrustworthy.

"I realize that you don’t know me, Ravia," she began in her soft, throaty voice that she knew drew people to her. "I can only tell you that I have the same fears as you. There is something in the ore that is causing people to become sick needlessly and I fear what it may ultimately do. I want to help."

"How can you?"

"I have the knowledge to analyze this substance and determine if there is energy being released and if so, is it causing people to become ill and die? I know that the ore must be a powerful element if it is used as a fuel source to create enough energy to propel a ship skyward. But it should not be used at the expense of people’s lives. Please, let me help," Kathryn insisted.

Ravia looked Kathryn in the eye and sat silently for what seemed an eternity. Kathryn noticed that his clothing was no where as clean in appearance as what other people wore that she had met. His hands were callused and the knuckles of several fingers were bent, the joints seemingly to cause him pain. She had no idea as to his age, but somehow knew that he had aged before his time. She watched him with compassion, patiently waiting for him. Then he shrugged his shoulders as though he had come to a decision.

"So far, they have been unsuccessful in getting a ship high enough and through the atmosphere. Each test they conduct, however, brings them closer to discovering a way to get off this planet. From what I have heard, they don’t know why this material works in a laboratory but not with a real craft." He paused and took a deep breath before continuing. "I’m sorry; I couldn’t get much out but you’re welcome to have it. It is only because of Larick’s endorsement that I trust you. But, he has good instincts about people." Ravia said as he handed over a pouch that contained the muoline.

Janeway immediately placed it in the stasis tube that she had concealed in her lap. She was intrigued by its weight since the size of the sample was relatively small. She tucked it away under the folds of her overshirt, noting with satisfaction that it left no outward bulge. She couldn’t wait to return to her ship and use its resources to find out more about it, but was content to know that at least for now it was safe.

"Thank you. I know that you have gone to great lengths to procure this sample and I appreciate your efforts. I should have some information for you by tomorrow." Janeway said keeping her voice husky.

"Not necessary," Ravia held his hand up to stop her. "I have no wish to stay in contact with you. Larick will tell me what I need to know. Good luck."

With that, he stood and walked out of the café. Kathryn was surprised by his abruptness and looked to Keth and Larick for an explanation.

"We have lived for too long a time looking over our shoulders at shadows, Kathryn. Ravia is scared. He knows something is wrong and as much as he wants to know what it is, he needs to work the mines because the rewards are great for his family. He has three small children who need him. This was a risk for him to make but he did it because he’s my friend and he’s concerned about what is happening to people here. Don’t judge him by that exit. Please." Larick explained.

"Of course not," Janeway replied. "I can appreciate that you all have gone to great lengths to preserve what you believe is right for you. It must be a terrible strain to live with the knowledge that at any time you can be imprisoned for speaking your ideas."

"You have no idea, Kathryn. Keth and I have known each other for many years and we have seen the changes that have occurred with the discovery of what this muoline can do to our people."

"Then you have known Ravia and Kyra for a long time?" she inquired discreetly.

"I have worked alongside Ravia for close to three years now and his family and mine have celebrated the rituals together many times. He is like a brother. Kyra is new to our circle of friends. I have only known her a short time but I believe she is committed to the cause."

"Are there many of you who feel the same?"

"Enough that when we are ready, we will be able to announce ourselves and cause sufficient attention so that the magistrate guild will have to listen to us," he insisted. "But until that day, we work where unfriendly eyes do not see the fruits of our labor."

"I assume that you have your own security measures in place as well," Kathryn said quietly.

Keth glanced at Janeway, sending her a look that seemed to question what did Kathryn know that Larick and she did not, but she remained silent. Instead, she outwardly declared that as soon as Kathryn had some answers, Larick would need to meet with them as soon as possible and future arrangements were made. Since there was no further business to conduct at the moment, she and Keth took their leave and met Seven and Kyra near the front of the tavern. Kyra gave no indication that she was anything more than mildly interested in what had transpired.

She asked, "So, your friend, Ravia, did not stay very long. Was he successful?"

Keth replied that it was too soon to tell. Kathryn gave no indication that anything was amiss with Keth’s response. With the afternoon sun waning, the air had turned cooler and the wind seemed to blow stronger. She informed them that a storm was brewing and that they needed to seek shelter for the night. Keth chose to bid Kyra a farewell with a quick embrace, promising to contact her soon with any news. As the rain began to pelt them, she urged everyone else into the vehicle; Kyra watched from a sheltered doorway, her face an expressionless mask belying her true interests.

"I know of a guild house where we can be received as friends. Privacy and no unfortunate questions will be asked."

"That would be an ideal plan but we had planned to return to our ship and get this sample analyzed as quickly as possible," Janeway informed her.

She did not want to convey any information about the second away team and yet, another night on the planet offered her the opportunity to coordinate her efforts to ferret out any subterfuge where Keth was concerned. There was a part of Janeway that would lament any knowledge that Keth was not all she appeared to be. Kathryn had discovered that she really liked Keth, enjoyed her company and was looking forward to more conversations. She found her directness refreshing and somehow knew that Keth had many tales to tell.

"I was hoping that we might have one more night together before you had to leave. I was looking forward to more time with you and Seven," insisted Keth.

"Captain, I can return to Voyager and get started on this right away," offered Harry.

"I need to communicate with Chakotay first. Janeway to Voyager," she touched her comm badge that was hidden inside the folds of the vest she was wearing.

"Chakotay here, Captain. Are you all right?"

"Yes, Commander. Everyone is fine. Lock on to these coordinates and beam Ensign Kim to Engineering so that he and Lieutenant Torres can immediately get to work analyzing the sample we have. Seven and I are remaining on the surface until you have some information for us."

"Understood, Captain. How will we know when it is conducive to contact you with information that you may require?" he inquired.

"Contact me by sending one signal to my comm badge. If all is well, I’ll contact you."

"Understood, Captain. Are you planning to stay the night again?" he asked.

"We may, Commander. I don’t know at this point," she replied looking directly at Seven. "Janeway out."

Kathryn turned to Keth and asked her to please forget what she was about to see and hear. At that moment the figure of Harry Kim disappeared into a shimmering array of lights and then was gone. Keth gasped.

"There was a part of me that thought that perhaps I was wrong about you Kathryn, but now I know that I was not. I don’t think I want to ask about that," she said hesitantly.

"I don’t think you do. Now about that guild house you mentioned?" Kathryn said simply.
